dirkg··on Solid Principles: A Software Developer’s Framework to Robust, Maintainable Code
Agreed. Adherence to dogma like this is cancer.

i was rejected rom a pretty big company after clearing other stages because I wasn't able to recite SOLID. Its like asking people if they know 'design patterns' and expecting them to come up with the textbook answer from the GoF book.

Telling people that you need to use OOP or DI or any fixed software methodology is just stupid.

None of this crap is used in real companies, the good ones anyway. You should be flexible, open, and strive for maintainable, consistent, and simple design.

dirkg··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
We all know the cliches - that millennials are lazy, entitled etc.

Whether true or not (there is definitely some degree of truth in any cliche), one thing is for sure - they didn't vote and as a result we have Trump and Brexit, and all the whining and moaning on social media, which is also what they excel at, isn't going to do squat.

dirkg··on 25 Years Later: Interview with Linus Torvalds
Its ironic that with literally all of human knowledge a google search away, people still don't do basic research and will ask questions online which can all be answered with a lmgtfy link.

I don't mean the search results that point to Stackoverflow, which are usually common patterns/answers. I mean looking up official docs, reading the code, just trying things without immediately looking for someone to handhold you through everything. You don't need to read medium articles or watch youtube for every single thing. Even a lot of tech conferences are full of talks going over the same basics over and over again, and these are meant for programmers.

This is a result of social media proliferation and the desire to do everything online and enhance your profile instead of just getting some work done. Y

dirkg··on No one should have to travel in fear
CBP/TSA/DHS are thugs who have virtually unlimited power, zero accountability, and relish the chance to abuse their power. Its no different from cops celebrating killing innocent people.

The US media is a joke, they drump up fear without holding anyone in govt accountable, and the people are stupid, no one cares about this kind of thing, they'd rather believe the usual nonsense about 'keeping us safe'.

dirkg··on Prosecutors, Transportation Department Scrutinize Development of Boeing 737 Max
> The certification requirements

The 737 is self certified by Boeing, which is really a joke. Basically a Boeing engineer can sign off and say LGTM with no oversight or independent audit as I understand.

dirkg··on Prosecutors, Transportation Department Scrutinize Development of Boeing 737 Max
The simple fact is that if either of these were true -

- a US airline was involved in the accident, esp on US soil - a non-US company was the manufacturer

then the FAA would've grounded the plane almost immediately instead of publicly declaring it was safe, which was obvious nonsense. In addition, US media made fun of other countries for grounding the plane.

The whole thing just shows how biased FAA/US govt has been.

dirkg··on Prosecutors, Transportation Department Scrutinize Development of Boeing 737 Max
IIRC FAA didnt ground the plane. Trump issued an order and FAA were forced to do it.
dirkg··on Chrome OS: Ready for Web Development [video]
Some counterpoints -

- Crostini is only for a limited set of Chromebooks. I have an Acer 15 with Intel Broadwell, which is extremely powerful and not that old, but Google won't support it for whatever insane reason they might have

- Chromebook keyboard is lacking. You cannot program without a del key

- They aren't cheap. Only the low end low powered 2GB models are and they are unusable, as well as not supported by Crostini. For this kind of money I can get a Windows laptop with almost equiv battery life

- or even better, a used Thinnkpad + Linux which would be better than almost anything for 1/2 the cost.

dirkg··on The $100B per year back pain industry is mostly a hoax
In my experience in the US you are much more likely to be 'sold' on unneeded medication and services vs getting an accurate meaningful diagnosis and course of treatment, when it comes to a whole host of problems but esp w.r.t physical injuries, rehab etc.

90% of the doctors you see will have no clue about treatments you can find in a 5min search on youtube. I don't mean hack treatments or miracle cures but basic physiotherapy, prevention etc.

Overprescription and unnecessary procedures are the norm. Patients are milked for money rather than being treated. The fear of litigation and desire to make a profit are the primary factors, not patient health.

I've suffered multiple sports related injuries. Consulted a number of doctors, out of pocket and covered by insurance. The physiotherapy they recommend is almost always the most basic and didn't do much. Doctors refuse to discuss other options or refer you outside their 'network'.

The whole system positively reeks.

dirkg··on The secret to a long and healthy life? Eat less
It is pretty ironic and sad that following a healthy diet, including CR, is much harder in Western nations and esp in the US.

- Processed food costs less than fresh food. - Multiple generations of people have been conditioned to eat processed and junk food. - People believe in the myth that 'cooking takes too long' - People are lazy and don't want to spend any time on cooking/food even when living a life of luxury compared to the rest of the world.

All of which is the opposite of most developing countries. US and UK are very close in this respect. Even many European countries value shopping for and eating fresh food much more.

CR, and eating in general should be about buying nutrient dense but low caloric foods - which is a mostly plant based diet of fresh food. The exact kind of food which is artificially expensive and considered a 'fad'.

dirkg··on Princeton’s Ad-Blocker May Put an End to the Ad-Blocking Arms Race
What about the many sites who legitimately exist only due to minimal ad revenue, and don't abuse ads, allow malware etc?

I'm all for supporting them. Its the sites that pose an actual threat or whose ad:content ration is something ridiculous like 2:3 that are the problem. Esp on mobile.

dirkg··on You Might Not Need GraphQL
Issues with GraphQL -

- the GQL server in practice is still going to have fixed contracts/endpoints, because arbitrary queries are a risk. This is what FB recommends as well

- there is no help in actually implementing the server end to end, since its just really a wrapper over the actual calls that need to be made. Apollo seems to be the new standard way to do this.

- Mutations/subscriptions are still a work in progress

dirkg··on Young Americans Have No Interest in the Most In-Demand Jobs, New Data Finds
So in other words, American kids and millenials are lazy, delusional, don't want to work hard and want all the glamor with none of the work. Is this really news?
dirkg··on The thriving black market of John Deere tractor hacking
This sort of thing is becoming the norm, and will become the norm with IoT. When every device is connected and has a computer, it can and will have the ability to be locked down, intercepted and monitored remotely.

People don't know or care about privacy, that's been amply proven, they just want rhetoric.

This is basically lending equipment while paying full price. We've gotten used to it with software, phones etc. Its absolutely ridiculous they have to sign agreements that exempt the company from any wrongdoing, and aren't allowed to perform basic repairs.

dirkg··on White House Bars NYT, CNN, and Politico from Briefing
This country has gone mad. The Trump supporters will justify and applaud everything he does while he burns down the world.

Why even pretend we have a democracy anymore? Trump and his WH are busy eroding and suprressing every form of free speech and I can't think of a single thing him or the Republicans stand for that actually helps people.

dirkg··on The Mark Zuckerberg Manifesto Is a Blueprint for Destroying Journalism
Most people in this country are idiots, and celebrate idiocy. People in Asia/Europe still read newspapers and news is still news, not sensationalist media garbage like here with barely any mention of the rest of the world.
dirkg··on Show HN: MovieChat.org – Archive and Replacement for IMDb Message Boards
Imdb also 'copied' all your posts, right? How is this any different?
dirkg··on Dear MongoDB users, we welcome you in Azure DocumentDB
DynamoDB isn't the same thing at all, its very limited and you need to use it in very specific ways. You certainly can't just use your current MongoDb data with it.
dirkg··on Dear MongoDB users, we welcome you in Azure DocumentDB
Never looked at DocumentDB before. So if I get this straight, I can get a fully managed DB that can scale easily, but still have all the advantages and compatibility of a regular NoSQL like Mongo?

I think that's a first, right?

dirkg··on Show HN: MovieChat.org – Archive and Replacement for IMDb Message Boards
Thank you!!

To my knowledge this is the only instance someone has managed to scrape the Imdb boards, very curious how you managed that.

I really hope you get a sponsor/donations. This needs to be promoted to other sites/social media and I will do my part.

I do have one request - can we do this for actors as well?

dirkg··on India has banned disposable plastic in Delhi
Good in principle, will cause hardships for many in practice. There are probably millions of street vendors who rely on plastic to pack food to go, as well as many other shops of course.

There are many other priorities to focus on which can have a far bigger impact.

dirkg··on MongoDB 3.4.0-rc3
I see many people say that Mongo is unfot for a production db, but it is actually used in production by many companies.

Obviously this is true of many products, but how serious is it in practice? The criteria for 'good enough' can't be passing Jespen because very few db's do.

Storing schemaless json is a very valid use case. And the fact is there aren't really many proper NoSql alternatives, other than RethinkDB, which I hope becomes popular, and maybe Couch. e.g. Cassandra is often touted but its a k-v store, not a document db.

There's a reason Mongo became and continues to be popular. I still think Rethink is superior in every way.

dirkg··on RethinkDB joins the Linux Foundation: What Happens Next
This is great news! Rethink is NoSql DB done properly, I know many others such as Cassandra often get mentioned as alternatives to Mongo but they aren't really.

I just hope the rigor and correctness that have characterized RethinkDB continue moving forward as a community project. Part of me feels sad it never caught on and will never be a commercial success like Mongo, but that's in the past.

Horizon is another exciting project I hope gets traction.

dirkg··on “We have decided to disable IMDb's message boards”
This is the worst news I've read. IMDB boards are where I always go to learn about a movie/tv show, there is decades worth of interesting threads and contributions from people who'd never use a 'social network', even with their stupid policy of deleting threads.

Its an insult the way they're going about this. Pretending that the majority of their users would prefer to use the cancer that is FB/Twitter, which even if you wanted to, is in no way even close to being a substitute to having a board for every single movie/tv/actor/cast ever.

The cost to run these boards is less than a rounding error to Amazon, they waste more money on their many projects that never go anywhere.

The real reason is that the people who actually use the boards are dedicated, you can't sell these people's profiles and 'monetize' them, you can't exploit them, and you can't sell them other junk.

I don't even care about moderation - any big forum will have trolls, let people self moderate.

dirkg··on The FCC is stopping 9 companies from providing subsidized Internet to the poor
This is not surprising at all. Our govt is now very firmly anti-consumer, anti-poor/middle class, anti-public service, and things will only get worse.

Meanwhile the rest of the world gets free public health, close to free Internet access, open research and actual science, while we increase spending on an already ludicrous and nonsensical defense budget justified by imaginary threats.

dirkg··on Silicon Valley's Ambivalence Towards Trump Turns to Anger
All talk no action. This is the definition of 'for show'. If they wanted, the ultra rich valley billionaires and companies could affect real change by leveraging their power.

But these are the same companies and people who tacitly approved of Trump and did nothing to stop his election, or even try to educate people.

I'm looking at Google, who are now trying to woo Republicans !

dirkg··on Chrome will aggressively throttle background tabs
Why can't Chrome add 'reload tabs only when focused' ??!!!

A simple, trivial feature that's in every browser on Earth, except bloody Chrome.

Its been requested pretty much forever and Chrome takes a perverse delight in ignoring the most requested features, because of course they know better than their users.

other examples - multi row tabs, customizable fonts, and actually giving a damn about memory usage.

Chrome is a memory hog and instead of optimizing that, the solution is to kill background tabs. This is very similar to Android's logic - instead of trying to fix rampant 'Android system' and 'Play services' wakelocks which cause massive battery drain, the fix was to forcefully suspend apps via Doze, which of course ignores the real problem entirely.

dirkg··on Updates to our Google Voice apps
What does this mean for Fi users? I guess someone inside Google must have a soft spot for Voice, neglecting an app for 5 years and then resurrecting it is very unGoogly.
dirkg··on San Francisco Asks: Where Have All the Children Gone?
Its really sad and terrifying that most people think spending all day taking care of and raising their children is terrifying, boring, unproductive, undesirable because of a variety of reasons etc etc.

No one has mentioned the joys. And raising your kid and being a good parent is not supposed to be easy or enjoyable. Its a lifelong task. Your parents did it. Its your responsibility.

dirkg··on Ask HN: What inspires you to persevere through adversity?
Thank you, fantastic comment. It reminds of this quote -

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now."

I am guilty of procastination, analysis and obsessive research my whole life. Its not going to help if you spend a month finding out the perfect diet or perfect vacation and then realize you could've done something instead - perfection is an unattainable goal.
