diogenescynic··on Apple nears $1B Google deal for custom Gemini model to power Siri
Why Gemini? Just because of the closeness between the two companies already or is there a technical reason? I like Gemini the least because each search results in slightly different hard to reproduce identically results... I find I like LibreChat the best and then just connect it to all the other LLMs like ChatGTP, Claude, Anthropic, etc. from there.
diogenescynic··on Rectal oxygen delivery might soon be a real medical treatment
"Are you a nose or mouth breather?"

"...I'm a butt breather."

diogenescynic··on H-1B Visa Holders Disappear from US Housing Market
Why would an H-1B holder even be eligible for a program like that? Makes no sense.
diogenescynic··on People regret buying Amazon smart displays after being bombarded with ads
Amazon has really gone downhill in quality lately. It feels worse and worse and is more expensive all the time. They need competition. Walmart doesn't seem to be a true threat.
diogenescynic··on TiVo exiting legacy DVR business
There’s a word for this but it escapes me that describes how a lot of modern tech is actually a step back for consumers but it’s more beneficial/profitable.
diogenescynic··on TiVo exiting legacy DVR business
TiVo was one of those clever incremental improvements that comes out and becomes ubiquitous. I remember a friend having it in 2001ish and it was so cool at the time.
diogenescynic··on Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society
It's a tax on dumb people and addicts. It's bad for society because it's just draining resources from people who probably can't afford to lose them.
diogenescynic··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
Try searching for "FedEx phone number" and it's not even in the top 10 search results. Not sure if FedEx is using SEO or paying to suppress results, but I was shocked Google couldn't even return this basic search successfully. I remember when Google Search used to actually work and have useful results and something like "FedEx phone number" would have the 1-800 number in bold text for you to click and immediately use. Now I use ChatGPT for those type of questions--and get the results I expect.
diogenescynic··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
I've seen other analysis showing the 80% of the wages are below the prevailing wage of the equivalent role. It's definitely about wage suppression and having an indentured servant.
diogenescynic··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
If this goes through, I will be extremely over-joyed. Kudos to Trump for doing what is right for the average American and bucking his donors.
diogenescynic··on Midcentury North American Restaurant Placemats
These are beautiful. Love the character and level of detail put into them. Really glad this was shared.
diogenescynic··on Health care costs are soaring. Blame insurers, drug companies and your employer
After the rise in popularity of Ozempic, packaged food companies started trying to figure out how to engineer food that would overcome even Ozempic's craving suppressions. It's truly ruthless what they are doing to us. https://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/medical-experts-warn-big-...
diogenescynic··on Health care costs are soaring. Blame insurers, drug companies and your employer
Every area of California is controlled by various healthcare monopolies. In Sacramento, it's Sutter Health. In San Diego, it's Perlman. In Bay Area, you have Kaiser. We have no choice or free market. You either pay them or you don't have access to decent reliable health care. I am honestly starting to think about just not having health care and going to Mexico/Canada when I need something--and we make well into the top 10% for wages. I don't know how others can pay for healthcare and all the premiums. I just paid like $300 for a minor skin care treatment at a dermatologist that I had to wait weeks for an appointment with. It's a clear racket. Oh and despite all this, none of the local speech therapists are in-network so we have to submit individual claims and they don't pay the full amount. It's a scam.
diogenescynic··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
I didn't say cyberbullying doesn't exist, but still--it's protected speech. People have to learn to deal with opinions/offensive words and not be whiny baby snowflakes. You seriously need to read a history book about the first amendment. And even still, the platform they're on is free to ban them.... so take it up with those platforms. Not the government like a pro-censor weirdo.

>It was words that caused the January 6th riots.

You're seriously uninformed. You need to understand the difference between protected and unprotected speech (incitement to violent like 'shoot that person' etc.). While you may not like what they said, it was protected speech.

Babies like you are ruining the country by trying to desensitize everything and make the country in a rubber room for mentally ill snowflakes. Society can't progress if you can hold unpopular and offensive ideas and debate them. You're one of those pro-censorship, anti-first amendment babies who would throw it all away so they can be coddled and infantilized.

>It was words that caused the January 6th riots. It was words that caused the salem witch trials. And I bet it was words that gave the shooter the idea that murdering Kirk was a good idea. If words don't affect you, yuu're definetly have a mental condition.

Just had to come back and laugh at this. Yes words are the problem, cut their tongues out! We'll all be mutes so people can't use words to hurt people. We need word control!

diogenescynic··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
His argument was that we shouldn't disarm just because evil exists and guns can be mis-used. Using that as a way to suggest his death is justified or whatever people are implying is just gross and disgusting. Dude was 31 years old and had 2 young kids and simply went and talked to people. He was assassinated in front of his family for nothing more than talking. Nothing that he ever did was even close to deserving violence. If people can't take someone politely debating their ideas, then they're a whiny entitled baby and they're the problem.
diogenescynic··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
He wasn't even a hate monger though? Just because he was a republican means he's a hate monger and racist? I don't get it. I haven't seen one person accusing him of this stuff actually cite a quote that seemed like hate speech or racism? They just don't like facts being used in a debate that hurt their feeling. It's ridiculous. People need to grow up. There is a complete lack of maturity on the part of his critics. They want to live in a censored thought bubble and don't value the first amendment (or seem to understand it).
diogenescynic··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
I almost noted in my prior comment that income is the second biggest factor but left that out. Totally agree that income is a big part of the equation. I also bet because it's Sweden it also has to do with public services like childcare being available.
diogenescynic··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
I am on my phone but you can Google and find lots of data that shows dual parent/intact families correlate positively with a bunch of other factors like income, college graduation, etc. More parents=more resources. More resources is generally better than less. Having kids myself, I can barely imagine being able to do it by myself... and even if I could it would certainly be to a lesser quality.
diogenescynic··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
I think one of the biggest factors comes down to single parent vs intact families.
diogenescynic··on AI is propping up the US economy
They've been saying the same thing about whatever the trend of the moment is for years. Before this it was Magnificent 7 and before that it was FANG, and before that it was something else. Isn't this just sort of fundamental to how the economy works?
diogenescynic··on Denver rent is back to 2022 prices after 20k new units hit the market
It's funny how for so long people fought the basic law of supply and demand and tried to force 'affordable housing' to be built exclusively, while the prices of homes skyrocketed. I think leaders knew better, but they just didn't care because they were making money on their property. It also seems like a form of generational theft from boomers to millennials. Housing supply was always being added until boomers got theirs, then they made it overly restrictive to choke supply and drive up prices.
diogenescynic··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
Another thought is the rise in school shootings.
diogenescynic··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
Probably correlates with remote work.
diogenescynic··on Why housing shortages cause homelessness
If you're on meth or fentanyl, it doesn't matter what the price of rent is--you can't afford it when you're using those drugs. I'm sure high rents don't help but pretending that homelessness is a housing issue is wrong--it's very clearly a mental illness and drug problem.
diogenescynic··on Why housing shortages cause homelessness
And yet as home prices have gone up the number of homeless remains pretty much about the same in California. So if the number of homeless don't really increase with the rise in home prices, then it makes me think there's really just always some % of the population that can't integrate and be productive in society regardless of the cost of housing or economic conditions.
diogenescynic··on Grubhub sold for $650M. Four years ago it was worth $7.3B
I bet these services get a lot of new users and then when the service is terrible and doesn't meet expectations they never go back. I tried them all once or twice then never again when it would regularly take 2+ hours for my food to get delivered. Never had a single good experience with a food delivery app. They actually seem to have regressed all food delivery which before this usually was managed by the restaurant with its own delivery drivers. Now no restaurants really deliver so now we're all forced to use these apps. It sucks!
diogenescynic··on A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones
>This is really common in health care.

I want to clarify it's only common is US healthcare. We're rally the only country in the world paying exorbitant prices AND getting low quality care. For instance, I once hit my head on a train while in France and had to get stitches. I was rushed to the emergency room in an ambulance, 2 nurses and a doctor immediately started helping clean the wound and stitching it up. I was in and out in 15-20 minutes, they gave me antibiotics, and they only charged me 50 EUR (which would have been free if I was a French citizen). I've had several similar experiences in the US that all took hours and hours in an ER and I was billed thousands.

diogenescynic··on A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones
In college, I went to a dentist in Santa Barbara exactly as you describe--he even offered sugary beverages from a fridge when you left the office. I remember on my first cleaning he said I had 6 cavities! Up until that point, I'd only been to my local dentist and I'd never had any cavities. I ended up getting a second opinion from another dentist and he didn't think think I had any cavities. And here I am 20+ years later and I've still never had a cavity... I've had similar experiences with veterinarians...
diogenescynic··on The backlash against the world's most hated font may be ending
Comic Sans, JNCOs, and all kinds of bad styles are coming back in vogue.
diogenescynic··on Doctor who sounded alarm on ultra-processed food urges tougher action
I saw a TikTok video comparing the ingredient labels on major packaged foods from the 90s that are still around now (Doritos, Cheetos, rice crispy treats, etc.) and there really are way more strange chemicals and additives now. Even in the 90s, the food labels were mostly normal common ingredients and didn't have 20+ total ingredients... It's funny/sad/surreal how little our government does to protect its citizens health. I also saw another video where someone was talking about how pasta water made from US manufactured pasta had a high concentration of pesticides. I definitely prefer to buy DOP goods over anything in the US because I trust the EU way more than US regulators on food safety.
