dinosaurdynasty··on Why making friends as an adult is harder
> Having to have everything scheduled weeks in advance

I don't see how WFH makes this worse, in fact it probably makes it better (less time spent commuting, more ability to end the day early with a flexible employer, etc)

dinosaurdynasty··on Four limitations of Rust's borrow checker
And in C++, those changes would likely shoot yourself in the foot without warning. The borrow checker isn't some new weird thing, it's a reification of the rules you need to follow to not end up with obnoxious hard to debug memory/threading issues.

But yeah, as awesome as Rust is in many ways it's not really specialized to be a "default application programming language" as it is a systems language, or a language for thorny things that need to work, as opposed to "work most of the time".

dinosaurdynasty··on Can AI do maths yet? Thoughts from a mathematician
There are likely lots of connections that could be made that no individual has made because no individual has all of existing human knowledge at their immediate disposal.
dinosaurdynasty··on Can AI do maths yet? Thoughts from a mathematician
Quantum computing actually isn't super-Turing, it "just" computes some things faster. (Strictly speaking it's somewhere between a standard Turing machine and a nondeterministic Turing machine in speed, and the first can emulate the second.)
dinosaurdynasty··on How bloom filters made SQLite 10x faster
FYI this is basically what Redis does (which does not support concurrent writes or reads afaik), and that still scales quite a lot.
dinosaurdynasty··on Luon programming language
Even VIM has support for LSP in extensions, I'm sure there's some lightweight LSP supporting editors out there.
dinosaurdynasty··on Ask HN: What are the best programmable holiday lights?
I just got Phillips Hue bulbs and they can do this, it's great (you need a command center thing, but it works pretty seemlessly).
dinosaurdynasty··on Python type hints may not be not for me in practice
It's because the nature of typing has changed drastically over the last decade or so, in well known languages, going from C++/Java's `FancyObject *fancyObject = new FancyObject()` (which was definitely annoying to type, and was seen as a way to "tell the compiler how to arrange memory" as opposed to "how do we ensure constraints hold?") to modern TypeScript, where large well-typed programs can be written with barely a type annotation in sight.

There's also a larger understanding that as programs get larger and larger, they get harder to maintain and more importantly refactor, and good types help with this much more than brittle unit tests do. (You can also eliminate a lot of busywork tests with types.)

dinosaurdynasty··on Yggdrasil Network
If it was super successful, would people even need to know what it is (like people don't know what BGP is)?
dinosaurdynasty··on Yggdrasil Network
In practice I find it stupidly reliable, and use it to reconfigure/fix WireGuard issues remotely (I had to fix the MTU once on hotel Wi-Fi).

It's also completely open source, unlike tailscale. And something's that cool is that Yggdrasil can automatically peer over "unconfigured" layer 2 links so if you have a complex topology (like an actual mesh) it can be useful for that.

It's also stupidly simple to set up Yggdrasil in a dual WAN environment, which is nice.

dinosaurdynasty··on Yggdrasil Network
Both tailscale (partially open source) and nebula (entirely open source, you have to host the "lighthouses" which assist in NAT punching yourself) do this. (Also tinc.)

Yggdrasil is basically researching a replacement for BGP, so hole punching isn't a priority. (There is a 3rd party project that does something like this for Yggdrasil, but nebula is probably the better fully open source option.)

dinosaurdynasty··on Rust for tokenising and parsing
Go is simple at the cost of increasing the complexity of stuff written in it.
dinosaurdynasty··on Rust for tokenising and parsing
I use golang for work and have done a fair amount of Rust programming. Rust feels like the higher level language. This really shouldn't be the case.
dinosaurdynasty··on Next Generation Out of Band Garbage Collection
You could do something like that in Rust with a request-scooped arena. But then you'd have to do Rust.

In node you could use worker threads (which create a new V8 instance in a separate OS thread) but that's probably too heavy handed.

dinosaurdynasty··on How to Train Yourself to Go to Sleep Earlier
When I quit work because of burnout some years ago, at some point I just started going to bed every night at like 9pm with no effort whatsoever, really.

Completely broke when I started a job again and has been difficult ever after.

dinosaurdynasty··on RCE Vulnerability in QBittorrent
It's different because bad actors can take advantage of the now-public information.

The point of a disclosure window is to allow a fix before _all_ bad actors get access to the vulnerability.

dinosaurdynasty··on RCE Vulnerability in QBittorrent
You can sign updates with an offline key (ideally like a hardware key), this is what APT based repositories do/allow
dinosaurdynasty··on Just want simple TLS for your .internal network?
Namecoin has made utilities similar to this (in order to constrain all existing CAs from signing `.bit` domains) so I assume so.
dinosaurdynasty··on Rust needs a web framework
You can not test for the absence of behavior. You can design type systems to ensure the absence of specific behaviors.
dinosaurdynasty··on Varlink – IPC to replace D-Bus gradually in systemd
The performance problem with D-Bus is the increased number of context switches over Varlink, not serialization.
dinosaurdynasty··on Gemma 2: Improving Open Language Models at a Practical Size [pdf]
One should not confuse alignment and current incapability.
dinosaurdynasty··on Ask HN: Has anyone else found it harder to review code recently?
I have to write a lot of boilerplate at $DAYJOB (Go is like that). Copilot really helps decrease the amount of typing I have to do.
dinosaurdynasty··on Beyond Public Key Encryption
If that was possible, we wouldn't need Certificate Transparency (whose purpose is to at scale detect Certificate Authorities doing this and other shenanigans).

Also "being able to catch them" is strictly better than "basically not able to catch them", which is the case for Twitter DMs (and most common DM systems), which was mentioned up-thread.

dinosaurdynasty··on Beyond Public Key Encryption
> After all, they could just “verify” themselves as the other party of your correspondence.

They can't do this at any real scale, because they will be caught. (Because they can't use the same key as the real key--since they don't have the private portion, if designed sanely--so anyone verifying it manually out of band will see that the trust has been violated. Also they will have to continuously modify future communications, which can be difficult, which is another way to get caught.)

dinosaurdynasty··on Shane Legg: Machine Super Intelligence (2008) [pdf]
https://grabbyaliens.com/ is a solution to this.

Basically "if they did already, we wouldn't be here, so we exist before the universe gets colonized." (Also they colonize fast, ~0.3c, so you don't see it coming.)

dinosaurdynasty··on Why the OpenSSL punycode vulnerability was not detected by fuzz testing (2022)
Any formal system worth its salt is going to model overflow.
dinosaurdynasty··on ICANN proposes creating .INTERNAL domain to do the same job as 192.168.x.x
they have .home.arpa
dinosaurdynasty··on "If nothing changes, all remaining Nitter instances will go down eventually"

dinosaurdynasty··on Ollama releases Python and JavaScript Libraries
https://github.com/ollama/ollama/blob/main/docs/linux.md

They have manual install instructions if you are so inclined.

dinosaurdynasty··on There has never been a better time to game on Linux
It works well enough that Valve is selling a Linux console that's flying off the shelves.
