dingus··on Ask HN: Best way to test accessibility of a website?
Does anyone else find this to be incredibly inconsistent between browsers? Edge is probably the best, surprisingly. Safari is the worst, it sometimes ignores entire sections of an article, regardless of using correct semantic markup.

I basically gave up on this, and just focus on using the appropriate semantic HTML tags, it's not my problem if a browser mangles it.

dingus··on Ask HN: Best way to test accessibility of a website?
- Use blind accessibility tools with your website. If you're on iOS/macOS enable VoiceOver, figure out how it works, close your eyes and use your website.

- Disable JavaScript and use your website. This may not be relevant for web apps, but regular websites should work normally.

- Try to use your website with only the keyboard.

- Try to use your website with extreme zoom levels and font size overrides.

- Monitor your resource sizes. Anyone with a limited connection (a LOT of people) will abandon your website because it loads slowly, or are paying actual money for the wasted bandwidth.

I'm not aware of automated methods that give better results than using your website with the actual accessibility tools yourself.

dingus··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
A simple timer. The colors represent an hour block of time. It’s designed for your peripheral vision, put it on a secondary screen. Just drag or use the keyboard.
dingus··on Google Has Dropped Ban on Personally Identifiable Web Tracking
I should clarify, no recorded media in the home or with a mobile device. It wasn’t a protest of strictly modern technology, as some of these things have been around for ages in other forms.

If I wanted to listen to music, I went to local shows. That was the mentality.

I recently did this same thing as an experiment for a full year. No mobile phone actually, no music, no movies, no games, so a little more extreme.

The strangest feeling will come after you “reset” but everything and everyone else around you is still connected. That’s when you notice how different things have become.

Good luck. It’s a nice feeling actually, nothing to be nervous about. It gave me perspective and changed how I respect time and other people. I also appreciate technology a lot more, but it’s now in balance.

dingus··on Public XMPP Server Directory
The whole situation is irritating. Federated XMPP is technically the solution.

However, it's in the best interest of Google, Apple, Facebook, WhatsApp etc to intentionally fragment chat, at the expense of every internet user. It's short sighted in the long run.

I still keep my server on. There are only a handful of contacts left, but it's mostly out of stubbornness. I hope it comes back around eventually.
