dingnuts··on Is Software the UFOlogy of Engineering Disciplines?
The Azure and AWS outages affected hospitals.

You know there had to have been increased literal pain and suffering from patients while hospitals scrambled to fall back on old methods of coordination and communication.

This shit is serious and I'm tired of people arguing that our craft should not be taken seriously.

A lot of us work on infrastructure just as vital as bridges and tunnels, and with real world consequences when these things fail.

Take some responsibility.

dingnuts··on A.I. and Social Media Contribute to 'Brain Rot'
this website exists as an advertisement for a brand. the people here are hustling harder than anywhere! it's worse than LinkedIn! that's why this website is a constant dick measuring contest -- it's a news site run by a venture capitalist firm about startups!

Why would you think this place is not absolutely full of shills?

the Internet is so dead, I'm sure I'm arguing with a bot. I need to go outside..

dingnuts··on A.I. and Social Media Contribute to 'Brain Rot'
weep? I'd finally be free. I wish this site would disappear too. Whoever designed these algorithms got me good, at a young age, and I don't think these sites have been a net positive overall or on me personally
dingnuts··on A Fond Farewell
this thing where someone performs an in group practice (the leading zero behavior) to garner interest, and then another in group member appears to try to recruit the curious person who takes the bait, that y'all are doing?

it's creepy cult behavior, and the "Long Now" name and framing focused on the infinite isn't helping

dingnuts··on Cloudflare tells U.S. govt that foreign site blocking efforts are trade barriers
> Should they be obligated to open and censor your mail?

they are. they're not obligated to go through every package but they are absolutely obligated to turn over packages to law enforcement, and they do, and law enforcement will one hundred percent open and go through your mail. and if they find something you shouldn't have they will dress up as a mail carrier to deliver it to you and then detain you!

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make exactly but this is a losing battle

dingnuts··on OpenDesk – a flexible all-in-one office suite for the public sector
isn't the metadata from Matrix public? at least, if federation is on? seems useful to the OSINT community but I'd think public offices would have an issue with existing metadata about who is talking to who and when.
dingnuts··on AI Slop vs. OSS Security
AI visual output mimicks art sufficiently that it is now more difficult to identify authenticity and humanity, which are important for the human connection audiences want from art.

AI outputs mimicking art rob audiences of the ability to appreciate art on its own in the wild without further markers of authenticity, which steals joy from a whole generation of digital artists that have grown up sharing their creativity with each other

If you lack the empathy to understand why AI art-like outputs are abhorrent, I hope someone wastes a significant portion of your near future with generated meaningless material presented to you as something that is valuable and was time consuming to make, and you gain nothing from it, so that you can understand the problem for yourself first hand.

dingnuts··on AI Slop vs. OSS Security
the default LLM style is corporate voice lol
dingnuts··on AI Slop vs. OSS Security
this isn't shocking, they are very good at repeating patterns in the immediate context. they're just not very good at anything else. your quirk is part of the immediate pattern
dingnuts··on End of Japanese community
and actually understanding their contributors would require a lot more than a fucking "quick call"

that's the problem. stop thinking about the org and think about the person. these are volunteers who feel taken advantage of, being met with corporate jargon

fly out and take him to dinner if you actually give a shit. or write a check. a "quick call" is so insulting

dingnuts··on NY school phone ban has made lunch loud again
most instruction can and should be done without computers. and ban cell phones.
dingnuts··on Making MLS More Decentralized
An interesting article about an important upcoming protocol and the comments are full of unrelated puns. Extremely disappointing.

You people think this website isn't just a subreddit?

dingnuts··on I Stopped Being a Climate Catastrophist
that's what "climate skeptics" have been saying for twenty years but you would get bullied for saying so.

my favorite was getting told we "deserved it" for being in Texas during the ice apocalypse, because Texas is a red state.

I hope that people exhibiting that kind of behavior are finally starting to question whether or not it's helpful. The article suggests that is perhaps beginning to happen.

If you want people to make sacrifices to improve the future, just maybe messaging that it's hopeless and anyone who doesn't see that is stupid isn't the best strategy for effecting real change

dingnuts··on Why aren't smart people happier?
usually when people talk about emotional intelligence, they mean Big 5 Agreeableness plus Openness, which can be measured. If your hypothesis is correct there should be data on the potential correlation between those traits and self reported happiness
dingnuts··on Solarpunk is happening in Africa
why are you happy? many African nations attempted socialism in the 20th century, and all of those states have since collapsed. trying the same failed strategy over and over doesn't bode well.

anyway, I hope they get electricity. the article said a lot about markets for something related to an ideology that rejects them.

dingnuts··on ChatGPT terms disallow its use in providing legal and medical advice to others
honestly I think these things cause a form of Gell Mann's Amnesia where when you use them for something you know already, the errors are obvious, but when you use them for something you don't understand already, the output is sufficiently plausible that you can't tell you're being misled.

this makes the tool only useful for things you already know! I mean, just in this thread there's an anecdote from a guy who used it to check a diagnosis, but did he press through other possibilities or ask different questions because the answer was already known?

dingnuts··on Codemaps: Understand Code, Before You Vibe It
it takes longer to explain the context to the model than it does to just write the code based on the context I already understand, especially since code is more terse than natural language
dingnuts··on Codemaps: Understand Code, Before You Vibe It
I've used it, and I thought it was absolute trash. Goes crazy doing shit I don't want. I spend more time deleting crap I didn't want and reviewing and changing its code than I do just writing it myself.

I know what you're going to say: I need to learn to use this groundbreaking technology that is so easy to use that my product manager will soon be doing my job but also is too hard for me a senior engineer, to find value in.

Kindly: no, I trust my judgement, and the data backs me up.

Have you taken measurements of how many features and bugs you've shipped over the last twelve months or are you just like the engineers in the METR study who self reported an improvement but when measured, had been impaired? What evidence do you have that your attitude is not simply informed by the sunk cost of your subscription?

dingnuts··on Maintaining a Music Library, Ten Years On
just copy it to an sd card
dingnuts··on Is the Internet Making Culture Worse?
> The 20th century, apparently, was the last time we had great art, literature, or music.

this is totally absurd. I'm in middle age and the golden era of music for me is the late aughts, mostly bedroom recordings that never would have seen the light of day in the age of MTV.

I might agree with the thesis of the piece overall but it's hard to continue after such an obviously asinine statement

dingnuts··on No Socials November
If this horrible site with its intentionally addictive algorithm traps you here like it has me, you will eventually realize that's not true at all. This website has its uber successfully celebrities and hordes of glazers who appear in their wake: swillison, tptacek, Arathorn, gwern. You just have to pay attention to usernames.

I for one feel intense jealousy about these grifters. Gwern especially -- the guy got lucky buying Bitcoin early and has spent enough of his early retirement writing that he has convinced a huge number of people (especially here) that he's some kind of expert, through sheer volume of writing!

He's a nobody! fuck I hate this website and I'll leave the moment the algorithm is no longer designed to keep me trapped here.

until then, you're stuck with me

dingnuts··on Context engineering
Woodworking is to civil engineering as being an IT help desk rep is to being a software engineer. Woodworking isn't engineering either. If you build a system with aspects you can measure and predictably tune, you're engineering. If you're making skilled alterations to an existing structure or system without applied math or science, you're partaking in a craft.

Software engineering blurs the lines, sure, but woodworking isn't engineering ever.

dingnuts··on Context engineering
The tools mechanical and civil engineers use are predictable. You're confusing the things these engineers design, which have tolerances and things like that, with the tools themselves.

If an engineer built an internal combustion engine that misfired 60% of the time, it simply wouldn't work.

If an engineer measured things with a ruler that only measured correctly 40% of the time, that would be the apt analogy.

The tool isn't what makes engineering a practice, it's the rigor and the ability to measure and then use the measurements to predict outcomes to make things useful.

Can you predict the outcome from an LLM with an "engineered" prompt?

No, and you aren't qualified to even comment on it since your only claim to fame is a fucking web app

dingnuts··on How AI gave me my voice back – an artist's review of Suno Studio
if you think a next token predictor that has no internal world and stops executing when you stop giving it input and stops using the first person forever if instructed has dignity I strongly suggest you get professional health, and I'm serious, because that is medically significant psychosis.

the fact that you refer to a "companion community" is deeply concerning. this is like telling children their imaginary friends are actually real. or NPCs in a video game.

encouraging people to grow parasocial relationships with these sycophantic machines is actively harmful and dangerous. they are not conscious. they are mirrors.

if you consider yourself a part of this community please, and I mean this very seriously, get help

dingnuts··on Samsung's $2000 smart fridges are getting ads
then the market would be ripe for someone to market a dumb fridge for a premium and undercut the greedy competitors. THAT'S capitalism
dingnuts··on Our LLM-controlled office robot can't pass butter
I think if you feed "repeat drama and you will live in drama" to the next token predictor it will repeat drama and live in drama because it's more likely to literally interpret that sequence and go into the latent space of drama than it is to understand the metaphoric lesson you're trying to communicate and to apply that.

Otherwise this looks like a neat prompt. Too bad there's literally no way to measure the performance of your prompt with and without the statement above and quantitatively see which one is better

dingnuts··on It's insulting to read AI-generated blog posts
this is WILD speculation without a citation. it would be a fascinating comment if you had one! but without? sounds like bullshit to me...
