dima55··on Framework Laptop 12 review
Is there a single person in the world that LIKES the half-height up/down keys?
dima55··on The wire that transforms much of Manhattan into one big, symbolic home (2017)
LA and SF both have eruvs
dima55··on Creating Debian packages from upstream Git
sbuild is the tool used by the Debian community and all the Debian infrastructure to do this. Uses schroot under the hood, and is what you want instead of docker and friends 99% of the time anyway.
dima55··on Far – Sublime Inspired Find and Replace
The example in the repo is `far --find "Foo" --replace "Bar" --tartget "./src/*/*.rs"`. If the value here is to not know how to use a regex, that's not very compelling
dima55··on Far – Sublime Inspired Find and Replace
Obvious question: how is this better than `perl -p -i -e s/Foo/Bar/g src/*/*.rs`?
dima55··on UndoDB – The interactive time travel debugger for Linux C/C++ for debugging
OK... Most of us don't know what a "google l5" is, so I guess we can safely ignore this. Heh.
dima55··on UndoDB – The interactive time travel debugger for Linux C/C++ for debugging
rr is awesome and is free and open and all that. How much better could this possibly be?
dima55··on I don't like NumPy
Hear hear! Some of these complaints have been resolved with numpysane: https://github.com/dkogan/numpysane/ . With numpysane and gnuplotlib, I now find numpy acceptable and use it heavily for everything. But yeah; without these it's unusable.
dima55··on NASA Stennis Releases First Open-Source Software
I release my work at JPL routinely. The process has been streamlined a LOT in the last few years, and now it usually takes on the order of a week or so.
dima55··on NASA Stennis's first open source software
"NASA" is extremely heterogeneous. There isn't one set of platforms or languages.
dima55··on Armbian Updates: OMV support, boot improvents, Rockchip optimizations
I believe that's common on ARM devices. But "vanilla debian" generally refers to userspace, and that should just work. Is this "armbian" thing quite literally "kernel + bootloader + vanilla debian"? The website doesn't say that in any obvious place
dima55··on Armbian Updates: OMV support, boot improvents, Rockchip optimizations
Why not? What's missing?
dima55··on Armbian Updates: OMV support, boot improvents, Rockchip optimizations
Their website doesn't answer the obvious question: what is it, and how is it different from vanilla debian? Do you know?
dima55··on Comparison of C/POSIX standard library implementations for Linux
What problem are you trying to solve? glibc works just fine for most use cases. If you have some niche requirements, you have alternative libraries you can use (listed in the article). Forking glibc in the way you describe is literally pointless
dima55··on Emacs Lisp Elements
"emacs". It is called "emacs"
dima55··on Stupid Smart Pointers in C
X macros can do tons of stuff C++ can't. And if you stick with C, you avoid mountains of C++ problems, even with all the stuff you're talking about.
dima55··on Yocto, RockPi and SBOMs: Building modern embedded Linux images
Or you can, you know, just run Debian.
dima55··on Apple Debuts iPhone 16e
If only one could open the back and replace the battery, the thing that has been known to everybody to wear out while the rest of the device is perfectly functional. One could only dream of such advanced technology. Maybe in 10 years.
dima55··on I Blog with Raw HTML
Yeah. This isn't "raw html", as I understand it.
dima55··on GNU Make Standard Library
Yes. It really should be "make" and "make-noguile", but we have what we have. In practice, you actually want the "remake" package. This is a fork of "make" that's a drop-in replacement (since it is the same code), has guile enabled AND contains an interactive debugger.
dima55··on GNU Make Standard Library
Did you try reading the manual?
dima55··on GNU Make Standard Library
That's great. Thanks for pointing it out.
dima55··on GNU Make Standard Library
GNU Make now has a debugger (`apt install remake`) that eases your first pain point a lot
dima55··on Show HN: Uscope, a new Linux debugger written from scratch
emacs. Worked great for decades and works great today. Learn it.
dima55··on Show HN: Uscope, a new Linux debugger written from scratch
I'm considering the part that says "GDB and LLDB pain me greatly". This project both says "I'm doing this for fun" and "the state of the art is bad, and I'm trying to fix it", so this is a fair question.

GDB is great. He says it crashes a lot, and cannot interpret some of his types. Maybe that's his experience, but I haven't had those issues after literally decades of using gdb. Some bug reports would be nice.

dima55··on Robotics and ROS 2 Essentials
Well, if 9/10 of a thing is a dumpster fire, would you expect the last 1/10th to not be?
dima55··on Robotics and ROS 2 Essentials
For what, specifically? ROS is a collection of different mostly-independent components. Just write the code to do what you need, or use normal libraries to do specific things they're good at.
dima55··on Robotics and ROS 2 Essentials
Highly recommend to avoid any companies that would touch ros with a 10ft pole. It's an unmitigated pile of endless shit, and any projects that don't recognize this are also.
dima55··on Map of California roads for cyclers (1895)
Would you rather live in Phoenix, or something?
dima55··on Map of California roads for cyclers (1895)
Is Florence terrible?
