diltonm··on The Elf on the Shelf is preparing your child to live in a future police state
>> Today not many people are religious

I think you're wrong about that. I also think you're wrong to conflate your apparent phobias about religion with Elf on the Shelf and government control.

diltonm··on You Don't Need JQuery
>> In fact, this is completely unneccsary with the existence of forEach and Object.keys() (both available in IE9+).

Oh the eyes of Microsoft shine gracefully upon us, we are so blessed. First, get a spell checker. Second, abandon jQuery at you peril. Browser makers should be required to embed jQuery. jQuery makes JavaScript almost bearable to deal with. That says a lot.

diltonm··on NASA Study Proposes Airships, Cloud Cities for Venus Exploration
This is encouraging. I've wondered for several years why Mars when you've got places like Venus as potentially more interesting locations. Doing long term atmospheric existence there could teach us a lot about what we don't know about space travel and our ability to push ourselves. If I didn't have two bad discs and was 3 decades younger; I'd be asking where to sign up.

Edit: Reading further, "while the crewed version would be nearly 130 meters long, or twice the size of a Boeing 747.". NASA needs to get much bolder in their thinking. Two people isn't enough. You need at least the size of a submarine crew to make it work and that means an airship 5000 meters long.

Edit 2: "At this point, things get crazy.". Well, it wouldn't be worth it otherwise.

diltonm··on Announcing Ubuntu Core, with snappy transactional updates
Potentially this is a good idea, not sure about the branding, might be a bit confusing but looking forward this. I'll read some more about it tonight but is the idea that this would replace apt-get? If so, why not keep apt-get and make this new technology available as new options to apt-get and push the whole thing up to Debian so they can benefit too? Let's not eradicate Debian.
diltonm··on Android Studio 1.0
It doesn't have simple project management?
diltonm··on Android Studio 1.0
I've been using Luna for a month, it's much faster at startup, they did a great job with Luna. Each version of Eclipse in the past 6 years has been improving.
diltonm··on The Case for Slow Programming
>> But good design is absolutely not an emergent property of the process of coding!

>> Good design is always a matter of compromises.

You need to have coded something to have shined the flashlight into the darkness so you can put a few dots on the wall and start envisioning a path. I have small scrap projects to let me shine the light and see what reflects back.

diltonm··on The Case for Slow Programming
I suspect she knows when you have that stare like you're solving a puzzle while playing with the cat's toy.
diltonm··on The Case for Slow Programming
>> "slow" is going to be self-defeating nomenclature

It's pointed, poignant and accurate as well as precise; self-defeating it is not.

diltonm··on How to nuke a submarine
Interesting read. I'd say one thing, bring back diesel boats, the Rickover experiments proved only how noisy and expensive submarines can be. Good men (or women if fully manned male/female - no mixing, it will not work), great batteries and ... Stirling Engines. I'd put to sea today with that, no more nukes. All of that to mean, you can't sink what you can't find.
diltonm··on Java for Everything
Agreed, ant is solid, the build system makes sense and is clearly laid out.
diltonm··on Java for Everything
I hesitate to even begin to imagine the kinds of bugs this could lead to.
diltonm··on Java for Everything
I don't understand the argument, I've used it for several small CLI tools, it works great.
diltonm··on Java for Everything
Google's GSON is the one I've turned to on several projects.
diltonm··on Java for Everything
I was with you until the Lambda stuff. I find the anonymous class _far_ easier to read and code.
diltonm··on Java for Everything
>> Whatever time was saved by the developer when writing the Python code (if any) were lost many times over as dozens of users had to wait ten times longer each time they fished through the logs.

I was first exposed to Python in 2002. The sentiment in the quote above is reminiscent of the reasons I came back to Java. With a little Bash and some Java or a little Python and some Java I can do pretty much anything I need from system services to web to rich clients.

Edit: Great article.

diltonm··on In Soviet Minecraft, server op you
The only people who were negatively interacting with the EULA were the server operators abusing it, like charging the kids of rich parents $10,000.00 US for special privileges in game. Mojang put a stop to that abuse, good on them.
diltonm··on Mean People Fail
>> administration that invaded an entire country on false premises

"Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors."

"participation in war crimes"

Are you publicly accusing Condalizza Rice of war crimes? Do you have proof? Does HN support your claims and are willing to fight a legal battle on your behalf or testify in your defense?

diltonm··on Mean People Fail
Agree on not being mean. I don't even understand how it could be considered reprehensible? She's a successful, smart, black woman, raised in the deep south by educator parents. Her success is to be lauded. I'd think the pages of the more liberal HN would be the place her success could be appreciated.

diltonm··on Mean People Fail
>> they all made difficult decisions for the betterment of the company

Irrelevant, if you can agree they were mean then it refutes PG's article. I agree with the parent. I also agree with part of PG's article, fights are often won by out thinking your opponent, transcending the moment to paraphrase PG. Sometimes the little guy does win, perhaps more often than we often recognize.

diltonm··on 3D.City – Game built with three.js and sea3d
The Load and Save worked, the game is amazingly good. The use of "use strict" blew me away, I had no idea that existed, it gives me a sense that JavaScript is becoming a solid language.

The game, day/night, seasons, I would buy this. It might need to be converted to Java to lower CPU usage but even as JavaScript it actually uses less than I'd have thought.

Very nice work.

On "use strict" I can't believe all the stuff JavaScript allows when it's not used, so I'm glad it exists: http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_strict.asp

diltonm··on 3D.City – Game built with three.js and sea3d
I ran it on Ubuntu 14.04, Google Chrome, nVidia card, it ran great! The CPU usage was a lot lower than I expected for JavaScript doing WebGL.
diltonm··on Grand Canyon: 1912
I'm not sure what didn't make sense to you? Was it the way I used building?
diltonm··on Systemd redux: The end of Linux
Hmm, I don't see any of that, odd isn't it?
diltonm··on Systemd redux: The end of Linux
Strange I don't see the issues you're talking about I use Ubuntu Desktop on a variety of desktops and laptops. I'd say PA was stable by Ubuntu 12.04. I do Skype and Google Talkplugin (now Hangouts).
diltonm··on Systemd redux: The end of Linux
>> Pulseaudio was Lennart's previous project. It broke everything in linux sound for a while, everybody moaned and hated it

I've been with Ubuntu since 2007 and went through the PA transition. I agree it is so much better now. Changing audio sources is easy and faster than on Windows 7. By Ubuntu 12.04 this was stable for me. Like changing from speakers to headsets for a meeting, smooth with PA at least on Ubuntu. Until PA I never thought I'd see audio united on Linux.

diltonm··on Introducing Visual Studio’s Emulator for Android
I used to complain about Maven but in the past couple of years it has made some significant usability improvements especially with regards to Eclipse projects.
diltonm··on Introducing Visual Studio’s Emulator for Android
>> what will our operating costs be in 3-5 years?

That is exactly what you need to be thinking about. As much money as Microsoft makes on consumers backs and then they lay these traps for would be small business developers. There's a reason why rich people try to avoid paying for their lunch.

diltonm··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
I didn't think I'd ever see this happen. Java is my bread and butter but this could be a game changer.

Edit: It probably won't be for me but just saying who knows, some developers might prefer C# over Java on Linux and Mac. Too bad Microsoft is 13 years to late for me on this. They had my interest when I was beta testing Visual Studio .NET 2002 but by 2005 when I saw how far Java had come and got a taste of the power and Cadillac nature of Eclipse; it would be tough to turn back now.

diltonm··on Gow – The lightweight alternative to Cygwin
I completely agree, Cygwin has real OpenSSH, well you can even run Gnome on Windows if you want; even as your main shell or I was doing that back in 2002 not sure it would work these days. Overall Cygwin can't be beat. If Gow has enough utility for folks who want to use it; that's cool but for me when I'm stuck using Windows for anything, Cygwin rocks.
