I disagree with what you say. But am commenting on the 'economic ties' of diplomacy theory.

Seems pretty debunked given the last decade of geopolitical changes and current war.

dillondoyle··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
Factually wrong:

"Of the 22 states with abortion bans that will instantly take effect if the landmark Supreme Court ruling is overturned, 10 have passed laws that make no exceptions for rape or incest: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas."

https://news.yahoo.com/some-republican-states-set-to-ban-abo...

---

Nazi is a loaded term for sure but I don't know what else to call it.

Not all Republicans have this behavior and or hold these policy aims. But a shocking amount of people do.

Many hold up the ideals of fascism.

And they use actual Nazi tactics.

banning books. passing laws that actively discriminate. using hate & violent propaganda/speech for political ends.

scariest: dehumanizing minority groups which enables their supporters to commit 'righteous violence.'

e.g. labeling queer people 'groomers' (or sadly ironically anyone who stands up against the state banning books).

using government law enforcement to the above ends. see recent police escorting proud boys into a library to yell at and intimidate a bunch of kids who were with their parents, only because a drag queen was reading to them. Talk about leaving parenting up to the parents.

Or filling up a van with a not so well organized militia to storm pride in tactical gear.

How about running black teachers out of town because of nonexistent CRT nonsense. Then following her to her next job which had nothing to do with diversity & inclusion, which is how evil for some reason.

and the biggest of them all:

attacking Democracy and the foundations of this country. Attempting to overturn a free and fair election. Attacking the seat of power in an attempt to prevent the peaceful handover of Government.

What are you trying to say? What specifically didn't work.

It wasn't simply to even out the racial proportion for the sake of it.

Segregated schools were incredibly worse in virtually every way. Funding. Buildings themselves. Availability of teachers. The (lack of any) kind of out of classroom support that creates great adults. Active discrimination and policing. On and on.

But you're right that it did not completely fix these disparities. Though improved, they still linger on.

--

I just spent 15 minutes trying to find it but I'm sorry I can't maybe someone else can?

There is a great long form article that deep dives this exact topic.

I want to say a small carve out city/district in Dallas, googling it might be Southlake?

Because of Brown, this white community created their own legal District/city enclave and did not sell houses to POC and thus no POC students. I think the article even said something shocking like first black student was in the 80s or something like that.

Since schools get lots of funding from local taxes it not only gives lots of funding to create an amazing school system, but takes funding away from the larger city that literally surrounds this mini-district.

School is still overwhelmingly white and affluent. That school constantly gets in the press for their dress ghetto day (black face) and more.

Not an outlier. Happens everywhere, not just the south though the south is particularly egregious.

Schools should be federally funded to at least remedy just one of the many inequalities.

Such a scary thing this is even a concern.
dillondoyle··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
Won't happen unless we somehow get 10 new Dems probably with 2 to spare (or primary centrist Dems)
dillondoyle··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
What about 'aid and abet' the person to get there? Or allowing crazy civil lawsuits that evidently are a constitutional 'gotcha'?
dillondoyle··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
Some states are explicitly banning procedures to save women's lives in emergencies such as ectopic pregnancies.

It really is that bad.

The right have been emboldened.

Thomas is no longer afraid to say their goals out loud: they are coming for more rights.

I'm terrified. As a queer person I already feel targeted.

Dehumanization & equating all queer people to pedophiles is a Nazi tactic which allows people to delude & rationalize to themselves that they are actually doing the right thing whilst perpetrating their hate and violence.

Not even going to go on tangent about Thomas' wife. It's the same undeniable b.s. that they espouse at their confirmations: I don't bring my personal (wife's) opinions into rulings (marriage).

That perpetual motion machine is one of my top fears as well - and sadly perhaps part of their calculus.

I work in D politics and don't think TX will be Dem anytime within the next few cycles. But the trend is there; especially if young people move in.

GA is closer IMHO.

FL is slipping away and illustrates this compounding effect that the GOP has engineered.

Florida's GOP SCO-FL (?) just allowed a really gerrymandered CD map put out by DeSantis, a break with norms.

The map is clearly undemocratic IMHO. 20 of 28 are now pretty safe R. That's very lopsided for the perennial swing state. Even trending +3% R, it should be a toss up.

State and local level is the same story, often worse.

More than people moving away, stopping immigration of young people has a big affect. That's big reason my state of Colorado has turned from purple to fairly solid blue.

Attacking women, queer people, non-religious people, POC, makes the state unwelcoming and even dangerous.

Being a bully gives them more power, which allows them to create more levers and enshrine more advantages to this power.

They have set themselves up to rule a divided states of America where they maintain extreme authoritarian power against the absolute majority.

You're also right in that global warming doesn't give a damn.

Sadly again their blocking of even sensible actions is just another example of what should be a minority party by #s literally killing people who have little power over this situation.

There is a ton of evidence that they targeted kids. Including lawsuits which they settled.

Just focused on advertising alone here is NyTimes summary with link to MA lawsuit.

They fired the first ad company who suggested reasonable adult oriented ads and directed the new one to run youth focused ads and youth targeting. Cartoon network, kids websites, teen magazines.

I don't believe you can brush aside those decisions by just calling the company 'terrible.'

True you can never look into someone's brain and know their intent. But the evidence is pretty clear.

If we give everyone a pass like this because of terrible management or incompetence we'd never hold anyone accountable.

Using US scheduling laws is a horrible comparison on which is 'better.' What about MJ, shrooms, lsd then?

If we're talking about which is healthier, in a controlled context of pure and knowable doses, I'd bet cocaine is worse for you.

The stress it puts on your heart and body are awful. Especially combined with alcohol (which who does a line without drinking) cocaethylene i believe it's called

Opiates cause far more overdoses, but that's mostly because of adulteration and non controlled dosing.

In this ideal world of legal and safe drugs that's my bet.

A safe dose of opiates is way less likely to cause an OD. Long term WDs and dose escalation are dangerous. And mental health issues with long term use are dangerous. But coke is just awful for you, and even worse mental health issues (mania and worse).

dillondoyle··on As water crisis worsens on Colorado River, an urgent call for states to ‘act’
That's how I read OPs comment (and kind of his reply too just reinforced my perception of it).

For sure I don't disagree that ag is the #1 problem.

On the same hand can't deny climate change is also a problem.

Plus ways to improve ag can also lower emissions.

The easiest / biggest one: stop eating cows so we don't have to grow as much alfalfa

dillondoyle··on As water crisis worsens on Colorado River, an urgent call for states to ‘act’
Almond milk isn't even healthy I don't understand. At least soy milk has some protein in it.
dillondoyle··on As water crisis worsens on Colorado River, an urgent call for states to ‘act’
It can be all of the above (though sure technically what you wrote is correct if nit picking the word due to mean solely caused by - but I don't feel like that's the intention / argument made)

And yes agriculture is wasting way more water than climate change.

But climate change does have an effect.

USGS paper showing climate change affects

https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/science.aay9187

"Drought and warming have been shrinking Colorado River flow for many years. Milly and Dunne used a hydrologic model and historical observations to show that this decrease is due mainly to increased evapotranspiration caused by a reduction of albedo from snow loss and the associated rise in the absorption of solar radiation (see the Perspective by Hobbins and Barsugli). This drying will be greater than the projected precipitation increases expected from climate warming, increasing the risk of severe water shortages in an already vulnerable region."

dillondoyle··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
Same as pornhub. No one wants revenge porn or CSAM. But FB Messenger is the largest distributor of that material. So long as companies are making a good faith best effort, or minimally the treatment should be the same.
dillondoyle··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
Besides laws regulating tracking (good or bad).

There could still be a net benefit while also increasing choice and competition. By allowing 3p app stores.

each app store competitor could create their own privacy policies, quality requirements, or maybe manual curation. whatever differentiation.

Apple would still surely capture a large % of average consumers whose privacy would be protected. But those who care could seek out and customize their experience and chose a different privacy policy.

dillondoyle··on Federal Reserve raises rates by 0.75%
How is it possibly true that ZERO companies will be created if interest rates go up.

How many businesses are equity funded in the first place?

We did not have capital to start our business.

Most small businesses starting from zero can't get capital in the first place (excluding personal funds, family funds which aren't usually charging interest tied to the Fed benchmark)

Those tech companies that do get tons of capital despite negative value are somewhat unique and for sure interest rates will eventually affect that. Valuations are already starting to come back to at least the Stratosphere ;)

dillondoyle··on Amazon calls cops, fires workers in attempts to stop unionization nationwide
In Democratic cities that makes sense.

At least on campaigns I've worked on they tend to endorse what comes out as the more 'conservative' candidate because it's all realpolitik: the candidate which promises the most police friendly policies and who has the best relation (and thus would be friendliest in office to) police, fire, ems, whatever group leaders.

Which are usually considered the more 'conservative' or policy friendly.

dillondoyle··on Amazon calls cops, fires workers in attempts to stop unionization nationwide
Bezos has no say in editorial.

Unless they are all lying and some of the best journalists (who tend to be maybe too ethical e.g. 'equal coverage') are complicit.

I could see an argument about access to the opinion section but he doesn't need to own a paper for that.

And they changed permissions to opt in.

Different numbers for different categories, but I've read anywhere between 18 - 25% on the higher end opt-in success.

But above example of weather app is a good trick though, probably gets more allow always on location than FB for instance.

dillondoyle··on The Xinjiang Police Files
I am you're right ;( Sad that you can confuse those.

the photos from gitmo aren't nearly as bad, probably because there aren't many. Most I've seen are just those through the fence photos, again looks too similar to China's concentration camps.

dillondoyle··on The Xinjiang Police Files
Completely different scale, they are a government perpetrating genocide on their own citizens, could go on and on how they aren't the same.

But the top photo of prisoner with hood and handcuffs and brutish looking military/security look very similar to some of the gross photos we saw of abuse at gitmo.

Might be me putting too much emotion onto it but the guard with the bat looks like a smirk, like how the criminals at gitmo enjoyed abusing and taking those photos.

dillondoyle··on The scourge of Rec dot gov (2021)
I both feel it sucks while it also clearly is necessary. But I think they can make things more equitable and we need to invest money to increase access.

scarce back country permits for popular places should be a raffle system not refresh as fast as possible. That system would be hard for 2 night trips, but maybe set aside like 10% for that, let them allocate first, then open 1 nights.

imho give some chunk of preference to locals and sports/non car touring uses. E.g. RMNP climbing is my personal example. I've never had a problem getting in, but I also usually climb at night. The top parking lot is pretty small and filled up in the mornings. But people that have to carry gear should get preference, it's much easier to take the bus without gear. AND if you're staying later having to walk an extra couple miles with pads or bags bc the bus stopped sucks.

RMNP is also just a prime example of awfulness of crowds and people. There are one or two trails that almost all visitors go on. They don't venture out even though it's such a huge beautiful park.

Part of it is ease of trails. At least partially concrete and very short. But the facilities are disgusting just a few bathrooms and people sh*t on the floor...

People are awful, loud, littering, rude. Hard to fix that.

Would love to discourage car touring where people stop on roads you can't get around. Big % of people go to the big 4 and don't get out of their cars for more than a couple feet to intrude on animals for selfies.

Also cars are just awful polluters minimally try to minimize idling. Encourage people to actually get out in nature.

I get there accessibility issues that's an able est bias, hence building out more easy / paved loops.

We should definitely protect land and animals. But there is a huge amount of space to open up.

Building more facilities/enforcement would better protect the land too.

Maybe have some of those armed rangers who roll around in giant SUVs instead walk and stop littering (that's jest, it's crazy the amount of them that carry guns).

Especially if you bring in and build out forest service land.

Marketing might help too, there are so many amazing places that don't get traffic it's all going to the same few spots.

This isn't perception. it is the reality and factual that a large amount of people / politicians on the right are saying this exact slur. re their counter response to critique of FL and TX laws, and book bannings across the country.

You should see the comments we get on FB. I run ads for political campaigns. It's insanely effective how much this has seeped into that electorate. And very very sad.

For sure. It's kind of funny how the kids are like oblivious or just don't care. Very cute when they get distracted, the oh I forgot the curry!
dillondoyle··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
Netflix recently got rights to Old Enough, about very young kids' trips to the store etc. It's cute and wholesome.

One counter point is cities have started adding 'danger' back into playgrounds (not actually that dangerous, more like risk in the mind of the child). So hopefully we'll see some progress.

Kids are pretty capable and most people are pretty supportive/helpful.
