dillondoyle··on EV adoption in US is happening faster than predicted
Sounds like you're in the UK.

It does feel like we're going to have at least 5 years of pain during this transition.

It also feels like the market isn't truly fair on price making the pain hurt more. Sure it's legal to rake in record profit but it's not ethical.

But I'm in the U.S. and finally have some slight optimism on climate future for first time in my adult life.

The climate bill provides incentives, credits, straight up money for all sides of this chain.

From raw materials -> clean energy capacity/manufacturing -> EV, charger, & battery production -> and finally the consumer EVs but also energy savings in upgrades & new construction.

~400b depending how you add it up.

Not enough. But not nothing.

Not just online too.

I think that's missed on a lot of these threads.

One of the more chilling is that after chasing someone out of their own home and into hiding, they tracked them down and someone posted a photo standing outside of their hotel.

Not so much reddit a AMA verification, more like a hostage situation.

dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
I'm not a zoomer.

I don't think it's as lopsided as you think. I think HN has a very strong, and fairly rigid, view on free speech.

And I think a much larger % than you imply see a grey area that is causing real, physical IRL harm.

It's hard to write down what I'm talking about. But it's pretty easy to see it.

Bullying has always caused physical harm. Both the kinetic type of pushing and this transitive type we are talking about.

dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
Looking through that lens there are/were far more than one agent provocateurs. and in that case what's the difference.
dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
Yes they can. People harm themselves all the time because of words.
dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
The violence is organized and facilitated via the internet. And yes law enforcement should have been more involved much quicker
dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
I think the definition of violence is a fair discussion. I think it has shifted a bit. To me words that cause physical harm is violence.
dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
They should ban green accounts on anything that relates to gender, queerness, harassment, discrimination, race, etc.

Basically non-tech things that stir up a lot of gross opinions masked behind sock puppets and throwaway accounts.

HN is becoming painful for me to read. Just so much hate, which is especially disconcerting to see it on a forum like this one. Which is supposed to be a place for smart discussion.

dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
How about stop the violence and harassment?

It's not just a message or speech. It involves IRL stocking, harassment, and violence against people they target based on hate and discrimination.

dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
Ok then if that's the standard where's our evidence.
dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
What specifically makes their victims 'weirdos' and why do you feel the need to comment that you get off to 'watching people do fucked up shit for internet clout'

That's exactly what you are doing right now.

They target trans women like Lizzy Waite and Clara Sorrenti.

And gay children...

What is so weird about kids who need support from the Trevor Project hotline?

Being queer is not a mental illness.

dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
The standard shouldn't be whether someone is struggling with mental health.

It's whether or not that person would be alive today if it weren't for this targeted violence

As someone pointed out below people have been found liable for (at a minimum)contributing to someone's suicide.

Victims have specifically wrote this in a suicide note. And these sick people follow up on their deceased FB profiles commenting and basically bragging about what they've done.

dillondoyle··on Blocking Kiwifarms
It is far more than just a few posts. It goes far beyond speech online.

The entire history/founding of KF is predicated around violence perpetrated against trans people.

They actively stock, harass, and cause harm IRL. Even far-right anti-trans people like MTG allege they were behind the SWATs against her - and that is not the first accusation.

This has resulted in deaths.

They recently followed a women into a different country, after they chased her from their home.

They tracker her down and someone posted a photo outside of her new residence.

like a cartel hostage sign. A not so implicit threat that they can find you no matter where you hide and are an IRL person is literally a hundred feet away.

dillondoyle··on At $249 per day, prison stays leave ex-inmates deep in debt
too late. those seeking asylum are forced to 'remain in Mexico' and others flown back into dangerous places. Instances where people are forcibly deported somewhere they have never spent time as an adult, have no family, no money, etc.

I find the whole system disgusting.

The US Govt purposefully restricts opportunities to request asylum in the way in which our govt deems 'legal.' e.g. a few people at a time through sparse border crossings.

And then prosecute those who cross the border because it's the only way to state their claim.

Shameful.

The propaganda of 'invasion' and 'replacement' has really made this a politically toxic issue. A dangerous one at that.

dillondoyle··on At $249 per day, prison stays leave ex-inmates deep in debt
Not to say we don't have a huge problem in our (in)justice system, but those stats seem to ignore genocide and war?

Rough numbers reported a lot are 1mm uighurs, 1.6mm ukrainians through Russian 'filtration' camps (though most aren't held long term).

dillondoyle··on FDA moves to make over-the-counter hearing aids available
Because it's the same. A label is a label. Both involve health.

Instead of some fent analogue cooked up in a chinese lab, this knockoff would be cooked up in a chinese lowest cost, cheating encouraged (if you don't get caught), grab parts from wherever, alibaba store room.

We do need to evaluate trade offs between danger, effectiveness, quality control, and price.

IMHO so long as the hearing device won't cause further damage this is a great move and should be treated like OTC glasses.

As to SCOTUS rulings, see below about this specific mandate by law.

However both parties have ceded massive authority to the executive over the last two decades (accelerating with Cheney).

Feels like that is a big part of the problem here.

Regardless, I don't think SCOTUS is making the right rulings on a ton of things, including EPA specifically per your example. Everything under the sun shouldn't have to be enumerated. we have to look holistically and allow the executive to adapt as dangers and circumstances change.

Executive should be allowed to use the powers Congress has given and often been purposefully ambiguous about (see 9/11 security state).

I've tried the one on my dad's car but it's pretty crap.
dillondoyle··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer
It's so frustrating. The new f150s are GIANT.

They look comical to me; like a monster truck, so freaking tall the proportions just look insane.

And most of the ones in Denver (which has a lot more people who actually go outdoors) don't look like they are used for anything except commuting.

I started driving again to get into the mountains more, and got an old tacoma.

The new ones are too big AND the dealer only had 4 doors with a mini bed!!! Just get an SUV....

And even my 2010 one looks big next to the generation before it. The old ones tow stuff just fine and it fills what I need: a ton of storage for climbing gear.

Searched around for electric tacoma info last night.

Looks like one might be coming 2024 (which i guess is sold 23?).

But it looks huge. One youtube reviewer of the render image said it looks more like a Tundra which are just insanely big.

I looked into the e f150. it would barely fit into my parking spot - not enough room to get bags in and out of door. Not even considering how to get an electric charger in there... In the near term I think I would have to use the whole foods.

I really really want an electric pickup, full bed, 2 doors - at a small size, light weight.

Sadly the range looks like a problem too.

Which would be better if they weren't so giant and heavy.

Hybrid sounds like only option unless they start to offer 400/450+ mile batteries.

At least until we build a ton of rapid chargers pretty far out.

Maybe someone can invent a jerry can of electricity!

When will amazon put an echo branded voice prompt car control in? Or whoever.

If it works well it seems like a great solution. Talking on the phone is distracting, but feels less so than trying to find touchscreen areas.

The disinformation has a purpose sadly. And it's clearly working.

I'm not sure how to fix it though.

More doctors speaking out? seeing some parents & their young trans kids feels helps.

The fact that the word 'humanizing' is used just shows how gross this is; that these kids and queer people are somehow not human already.

Just as a thought experiment type rabbit hole, I've spent some time thinking about the net benefit of our increasing representation and being more integrated into society at large.

It feels that on the whole the #s look more accepting. Gay marriage has majority support (so does abortion..)

But seeing trans people and queer people on TV has triggered an insane backlash.

See it on HN threads all the time.

"netflix is all propaganda."

When the representation numbers are just barely catching up the real general population (of which is probably still low given closeting).

Our existence isn't propaganda.

It's not indoctrination to live our truth.

But a lot of people feel threatened and backed into a corner which is dangerous.

And some politicians pick up on this and whip it up into an very dangerous frenzy of disinformation and hate.

dillondoyle··on Part of my code makes Copilot crash
The adoption thing is so heartbreaking.

I'm sorry ;(

It's often the ones restricting adoptions that also want more of them.

Why stop someone from giving love. Hate is just too strong.

In the US adoption is heavily tied up in religious institutions. States will pay / contract it out to church affiliated orgs.

And it's plain as day that the R appointed judges & justices up and down the bench are wanting to put 'religious freedom' over common curtesy, dignity, and human rights.

Another one pissing me off:

The guy who helped write the Texas abortion bounty bill is suing to get rid of rules that insurance has to provide birth control and prep. Plenty of scholars think they will win.

Insane that their extreme religious beliefs get to override our health and safety.

Even if we can get an angry political movement we can't quickly fix lifetime appointments on courts from local level all the way up to scotus.

For what it's worth, I replied to you above with numbers showing it's even more MSM than that in CA.

But on testing it feels to me we are making the same mistakes as covid.

I've had this cold/run off gunk for weeks. Longer than what is normal from allergies.

My Dr. told me I need two lesions to get a test.

Which is like saying you need to have been in Wuhan and have severe cold like symptoms.

The pox are pretty unique looking... Especially if you've had recent intimacy.

IDK maybe we sohuld bring back I. Am. Not. An. Epidemiologist (IAMAE) but wouldn't it be better - if our supply is limited - to test people who might have been exposed, so they can quarantine before they get pox and then contact trace.

Probably non-pox spread, but if you have those sores it's pretty noticeable ...

dillondoyle··on Apple tells employees to work at the office three times per week starting Sept
As someone who just got their vaccine and in the high risk group: ooof I hope not.

What data points to it being a threat in the 'mainstream' (I don't like that word here) population right now?

here are CA stats [1]; only .8% (mostly identify as cis) female infected.

though it doesn't show demo xtabs over time. so hard to tell if only is growing.

If it spreads through brief contact we'd be screwed..

Let alone if it spreads through droplets and or fomites.

--

Sad we failed yet again. Especially queer community, and like all things health disproportionally bipoc. seems like we had all the tools & knowledge to stop, or drastically slow, this one but failed.

Seeing photos of pox on people's faces is just truly terrifying.

I really really hope this vaccine works or at least prevents sores like that.

Hard to change behavior to avoid all sex / human touch..

The groomers thing is so scary... And clearly done with intent at scarily high levels of reach.

I feel increasingly unsafe and I live in a pretty liberal, decently big city.

dillondoyle··on Part of my code makes Copilot crash
Since when have LGBTQ people been seen as normal and like everyone else?

We've only had marriage for less than a decade and scotus could take that away; in many states it's still illegal i believe some constitutionally.

Not even going to try and touch on what most in here are up in arms about (gender, trans rights, race).

What children at age 6 are getting hormone blockers/therapy?

Just a quick search shows that standard treatment is not until puberty.

For a 'smart' forum that just seems like some basic common sense thrown out the window...

Why block or alter puberty that won't happen for years.

And even if some kids are getting their treatment at a younger age why are you making that your business?

Why are people angry about that?!

nd worse why are states passing laws to investigate doctors & parents for 'child abuse'? Do people really think some doctor or mad parent is just giving their kid hormones because they wanted a boy not a girl?

Trans kids have some of the (might be the highest) suicide rates of any group. Gender affirming and supportive care is widely established best practice. But so is abortion..

Why do people here feel like they should have the final say over the health of a child and families' medical decisions.

The answer seems obvious to me... And it's a sad one.

Plus who is forcing you to change 'core language concepts'?

Is it really a bridge too far to ask that we all be kind to one another?

Blatantly rejecting someone's identity to their face is minimally rude, sometimes malicious, and far too often violent at worst.

Why are SO many people on this thread so upset about this.

Comment er below makes a very good point about the violent consequences of these escalations.

Labeling people 'groomers' is not even trying to hide its intent. Sex predators are the one class of people most are ok with extrajudicial violence against. That's not an accident.

This is so frustrating, I just can't wrap my head around it.

The last few comments i've made on HN are just being disappointed with what should be an intelligent community.

So many comments here are just debased from reality and rejecting basic facts.

I've mostly stopped engaging on HN because these threads come up every other time i visit and it's just so maddening & frustrating to read.

I'll just end by saying I'm pretty young. Things were feeling optimistic.

But not anymore. I'm terrified for my future. I am thinking through self defense options & scenarios because there is a decent (and growing) possibility of violence against me and my community.

I'm lucky to live in a state which is very unlikely to pass laws revoking my rights. For now.. Won't stop SCOTUS though.

And most are not as privileged as I am.

dillondoyle··on Time for Army Corps of Engineers to investigate moving water West?
Isn't this just an argument that individual consumption is not the problem? And likely a planned distraction perpetrated by agriculture & industry.

I half agree with the author in that "conservation simply can’t do the job" but their supposition seems to be framed as household use alone.

Conservation changes / remove wasteful agriculture would be plenty.

dillondoyle··on A looming copper crunch and why recycling can’t fix it
I buy the pipe fitters union power.

Just read an article in a local paper about banning gas connections in new housing. Had a direct quote from the union saying they aren't inherently opposed per se, but need ___ $$ to offset any job losses.

And then next graph mentioned that union was part of a lobbying pac thing fighting for the status quo

I would! I want to do the california zephyr. But hard to poney up just for a scenic ride when the cars aren't even very nice and cost more than a flight in some cases.

Seems like the problem though is Mr Buffet's rail monopoly? Maybe if the Govt got a right of way...
