dilawar··on Sci-Hub: knowledge as a human right
eLife needs a honorable mention here. They are doing pretty good job in open publishing and publish quality research. Now they are taking it up a notch higher and will publish all articles accepted for reviews. Its upto the OP to respond to reviews the way they want. Paper will be published along with all reviews and responses. Reader can figure out the rest.

dilawar··on Mumbai embraces its booming flamingo population
In one of the Attenborough documentaries, they showed Hyenas visiting the capital of Ethiopia that locals feed them at night. I was like looks like a much poorer city than Bangalore, but darn their streets are so clean (even at night).

According to at least one anthropologist, the religious leaders were so obsessed with the idea of ritual purity and pollution that physical cleanliness took a beating. It is not easy to understand even for an Indian. Caste system foundations were also based on, or at least justified by, the idea of ritual purity and pollution. 'The remembered village' by MN Srinivas hints a bit about these things.

While growing up in village, there were so many sayings now I understand. Like my soul is pure what if my hands are dirty or I havnt took bath for two days. Cleaniness of place is even less cared for and personal cleanliness.

I get it that other dont understand why its so hard to keep your neighborhood clean. Its not hard, its just most dont care!. And before thr age of plastics, nature did all the cleaning during monsoon and summer.

PS: It is not the politician. It is the people and culture.

dilawar··on Things I’ve learned in my years as a software engineer (2021)
The ability to pay attention on a specific thing for more than a few seconds doesn't feel "natural" to me. Evolution does not favor long-term attention for anyone who is not a top-predator. Imagine a deer paying too much attention to grass It's eating and not able to be distracted by the slightest of the noise a predator may make is not going to reproduce. We, humans, are close to top-predators, so, maybe! I've not thought about it too deeply. But I still feel that the ability to focus for a long time is a bug, not a feature in the natural environment. The economic system has turned into a must-have feature and lack of it a bug that is to be cured by medicine. I wonder if early pioneers (not the sciency/nerdy kind) all had ADHD?
dilawar··on NetworkX 3.0 - create, manipulate, and study complex networks in Python
networkx and pypy is a great combination. pypy really shines on pure python libraries like networkx and myhdl.
dilawar··on VALL-E: Microsoft’s new zero-shot text-to-speech model
Recently in India, a politician deepfaked the voice to deliver his speech in multiple languages [1]. Can't comment on the quality of tech since i dont speak this language but it is pretty alarming to me. 2% vote swings make a huge difference in Indian politics since there are many regional parties. Almost more than 2/3rd of Indian voters didn't vote for modi yet his party is doing very well.

dilawar··on Numba: A High Performance Python Compiler
pypy is great if you are not already using numpy heavily. Pure python libraries like networkx and myhdl showed 20x speedup when I used it a couple of years ago. For pure python code, pypy provides free lunch.
dilawar··on Numba: A High Performance Python Compiler
+1 for pybind11. I wrote python bindings using pybind11 for two C++ based simulators: MOOSE and Smoldyn. It was surprisingly easy to use given how badly Python C-API and c++ tooling suck. Though you have to create binary wheels for every version of python and platform separately.

Today there was an article about his parents in nytimes. I think at at least one of them is professor of law. And both parents seems to be involved with his company. I wonder if he didnt get any advice from them about not talking?! Maybe he knew that he is done legally and there is no downside to talking to public.

dilawar··on Thunderbird for Android preview: Modern message redesign
I used blue mail for years and recommended it to my wife and some of her friends. Everyone likes it. I, however, moved to fairmail and been very happy with it. Reason: its foss and much better than k9. Have a look at its feature set and UI.
dilawar··on Insights into accuracy of social scientists' forecasts of societal change
TLDR: Social scientists are no better at predicting societal changes than the rest of us.
dilawar··on Choosing Nim out of a crowded market for systems programming languages
I agree but I tool functional programming course in college. It was hard! Someone who may not have invested enough in leaning basics of FP, I can totally see why Rust feels like a hard language. During the prototyping phase, I also avoid lifetimes and other esoteric features and often use unhealthy amount of Arc and Rc.

Nothing beats Cargo and company and loves compiler messages. Have used NIM as python replacement, and while language is great and nim batteries are decent, the ecosystem is not there. But who would use nim as python replacement!?

dilawar··on Rust and C++ Interoperability
We are developing UI in slint-rs for our product. Our eventiual target is IoT devices (cyber defense) though we are starting with desktops. We are a young startup and our experience is very limited in UI space so please take all of it with a pinch of salt.

One of our intern got the UI working with Slint in a few days and since then we didn't feel a strong need to move away from it. We found a few missing features: it was not possible to tell if a Windows is hidden or not. We ended up sending a few patches.

So far our experience has been pretty good with slint-ui. We are not tested the UI on OSX and Linux yet, only windows. On AWS machines with Windows server, the UI fails to launch sometimes because of some missing GL libraries. Also note the licensing of Slint-UI https://github.com/slint-ui/slint/discussions/379.

> RPM on the other hand is an over-engineered mess: <https://xyrillian.de/thoughts/posts/argh-pm.html>. Tangentially, YUM and DNF were the slowest package managers I've ever used. They're a real pain.

I like OpenSuse but man zypper is possibly the slowest package manager ever!! Can't even download in parallel. I think they are now moving to dnf.

Interesting thought. Do you have any example or a blog post how you do it? How do you write down a MIMO? Wouldn't it require too many global variables?

dilawar··on Cppfront, Herb Sutter's proposal for a new C++ syntax
Why can't they just improve tooling and dependency management first? After using Cargo, I now find Python's tooling unbearable. Once you have seen the other side, there no coming back.
dilawar··on p0f: TCP Packet Fingerprinting
Too bad it doesn't work on Windows out of thr box without cygwin/msys trickery. The lippcap doesnt have an open source alternative on windows. winpcap is almost dead and npcap is not free to use.

dilawar··on How did a woman with a missing temporal lobe become bilingual?
Taking over the functions is probably only true for the regions in the same part rather than among parts. AFAIK, one region of cortex can compensate for other regions but I doubt that it can compensate for the damage in other part of the brain, e.g. hippocampus or cerebellum.

I often wonder about the nature of the control flow in the brain. And if there is any?
