digital_ins··on An open letter to Paul Graham
Also the talk of GDP growth slowing down is so off-putting. It just goes to show that the author has no understanding of economics. GDP growth tends to slow down as the base increases. The entire article sounded like an adult making the case that if he ate more, he'd grow taller.
digital_ins··on An open letter to Paul Graham
Anyone who thinks that an 80% tax on the rich is going to yield spectacular results should take a look at the whole host of countries following the communist economic model as well as the countries that adopted the non-explicit communist model (these include most of the countries in the 'Non-Aligned Movement') to see how heavily taxing the rich as well as trusting that the government is more efficient with capital allocation is working out.

It's not.

digital_ins··on Now That Netflix Is Global, You Should Go Buy a VPN
I just subscribed to the Indian version of the service (NF) and oh lord the catalog is hot pile of yesteryear's st(r)eaming garbage
digital_ins··on Microsoft’s Cortana Gets Baked into Cyanogen’s Forked Version of Android
It doesn't. But I guess 'deep integration' sounds like something sexy that every single phone OS should have with an onboard voice AI. This is frighteningly expensive if you get into doing this on your own. So this integration with MS' Cortana is their solution to the entire conundrum (while still managing to be different enough from Google's version of Android)
digital_ins··on Ask HN: Should we use a picture of a smoking man on our webpage ATF?
Thank you! That's a pretty solid line of thought to consider this decision. The offending butt is not small enough to be prominent, but large enough to be visible.

Editing it out has become quite the challenge given the amount of blur in the hand already. If you're curious, here's a look at the image: https://img42.com/tMbeJ

digital_ins··on Show HN: Chrome Extension for saving and sharing notes inline on websites
Reallyyyy nice! Beautiful colors, simple interface. Looks a lot like Rap Genius, but for single-purpose functionality.

I think there was something like this a long time back that allowed you to share notes with other people (so two people could go to the same site and see all the notes put on there).

The functionality is great, what do you think is the use case for this?

Also: you're doing yourself a disservice by launching on ShowHN this way :-( Posts that make it to the front page of ShowHN usually have a ton of karma or have been accounts since a long long time.

digital_ins··on Ask HN: Looking for compression algorithm that took 6GB to 800MB. Anyone know?
why not just create an online API for this? Sequences that are not yet "found" would go uncompressed, and as time goes by and internet speeds get faster and computing power gets cheaper, more sequences will be "found" for reference in that API and the algorithm will keep getting better.

Alternatively, you could release a program that comes with an already long sequence of the decimal section of PI and connects regularly to the internet to download more digits (you could even run the computation & API on a google compute / amazon ec2 instance to keep costs low)

digital_ins··on Microsoft’s Cortana Gets Baked into Cyanogen’s Forked Version of Android
I've used Cortana and apart from a little minor anthromorphic work to give her a 'personality' (like Siri), I wouldn't say that it's too far ahead of Google Now in terms of features and functionality. Baking Cortana into Cyanogen OS seems a little like overkill in terms of deviating from Google's version of Android
digital_ins··on A Good Night’s Sleep Is Tied to Interruptions, Not Just Hours
That sorta explains why people who sleep late also tend to feel groggy. The "early worms" tend to be a noisy bunch in the mornings (I currently have construction work start in the condo above mine every morning from 9am onwards)
digital_ins··on Show HN: Sketchboard for Slack

digital_ins··on Fountain – A markup language for screenwriting
This looks like a standardization of the way that screenwriting is done, rather than a revolutionary change in the way screenwriting is done. When I opened the .fountain file, I half-expected to see XML litter the place :-D

I could see myself writing a screenplay using this - and a really positive thing is that it imposes a framework on how I should be writing one. (I've tried multiple times, believe me)

Am really curious: what's the plan to foist this onto the Hollywood screenwriters?

digital_ins··on Thatneedle: Semantic Search for retail
Posting for a guy I met on reddit (ikr!). I liked their simple interface, tho the lack of documentation makes me think they don't plan on being a biz-to-dev solution. If signing up is not your thing, here's a direct link to something you can try out: http://www.thatneedle.com/filterd
digital_ins··on Show HN: Search and download fonts from GitHub
the user interface is gorgeous. Quick bug report: When I typed in "monserrat", it showed me two results and on clicking the second result, I saw this "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bananashavings/unityGame/e.... Help please!
digital_ins··on Show HN: Your bracelet is your datahub
ah - you need to be clear about that - because batteries are heavy and would make the bracelet warm and unwieldy :-(
digital_ins··on Show HN: Send password securely to a friend through any IM
I asked about the privacy policy because I assumed that you also had visibility of my private key (I assumed you were generating it on your server). Usually I look to the privacy policy to see what information you're receiving and storing. Re jurisdiction: privacy policy agreements are appendages of the terms of use - which is subject to law only in defined jurisdictions.
digital_ins··on Show HN: Natural Language Time Zone Converter
hahaha, yeah, good ol' getTimeZoneOffset() being put to work. It's shocking how crappy JS' date object is, it's near impossible to do anything powerful with it without resorting to obnoxiously-structured regex.

Once again - great job! I'm building complex conversational interfaces and even I think that this really is something.

digital_ins··on Show HN: HTMLhouse – write and share some HTML
definitely on the editor
digital_ins··on Show HN: Send password securely to a friend through any IM
Two points: 1. Would you have my password / private key / both? 2. Why does it say 'As of now in 2014'?.... Instead of 2015?

Perhaps you could provide a Privacy Policy and tell us what jurisdiction it would be enforceable for?

digital_ins··on Show HN: Code4Startup - Learn to code by cloning real life startups

digital_ins··on Show HN: A better smart mirror
Nicely done tutorial. I was wondering how you got the display onto the mirror and then I scrolled down and saw the monitor on the back of the silvered surface (doh-doi!)

A couple of suggestions: (1) Externalize the mic - either have it hook into your phone to listen to your voice or through some other mechanism - it will boost recognition accuracy significantly and allow you to do complex tasks (2) Better demo. I'd sure you could take this into school / work and film in a better lit location. If screen brightness is an issue, you could sand down the silvering right in front of the screen (3) If commercialization is your plan, look into Samsung's new OLED tech that's super skinny. (4) Android speech interfaces are easier and more flexible to program. And dead-simple to use (5) Find someone who can build a nice interface for you and design that interface in the highest contrast possible (bright fonts, black backgrounds)

While I was building my NLP product, I went looking for companies that were building smart mirrors and came up empty for ones that were on Google but still in business. I suspect that was the situation because of the prohibitive price but garbage speech recognition. As of today, however, the tech's available to let you do things with SR you'd never thought possible even 2 years ago

digital_ins··on Show HN: Natural Language Time Zone Converter
This is the best thing I've seen in a long long time. I spend most of my days co-ordinating between timezones for my phone calls and this would really make my life much easier. Coming from an NLP background, I can say that the front-end simplicity does mask a whole lot of back-end complexity.

Quick question, how're you handling daylight savings? Do you rely on the in-browser JS to figure it out? Or are you using something like moment.JS to handle this for you?

digital_ins··on Show HN: Roll.js, just a little library to track position and scroll
Wow, I have been looking for something lightweight and powerful like this for soooo long
digital_ins··on Show HN: Instantly find social profiles of any celebrity
The concept is interesting. Do you figure you'd sell something like this to a Facebook or someone like that? Also, I typed in Marc Andreessen and it showed me A16Z's account (which is incorrect) and Marc is very very popular.

I'm guessing you hand-curate this list?

digital_ins··on Show HN: Caller Notes, desktop app that pops up during a call with shared notes
this is very interesting. Some thoughts:

1. Have you thought of building a Salesforce integration? That would really boost the $ value your use cases 2. On that note, there's another app that's on the same page of ShowHN - Newest, as yours: SalesPatron. You should consider reaching out to them to integrate 3. Better graphics on your webpage please :-) 4. There are a LOT of apps out there that sync your phone with your computer so that you get desktop notifications when someone calls / texts you. Consider reaching out to their devs to see how interested they'd be to have their app send yours a phone number when someone calls.

digital_ins··on Show HN: HTMLhouse – write and share some HTML
Nice. Two questions: 1. How long do you retain the code snippets for 2. How is this different from the many many options out there 3. Why not have an 'Email This' button?

Good going on the simplicity of the page and also on the no-registration-needed system

digital_ins··on Show HN: Your bracelet is your datahub
how does it charge your phone without a battery inside the bracelet?
digital_ins··on Richpic – $499 Exclusive Photo-Sharing App
But isn't rich people photo-sharing all about showing the poors how to live it up?

A great richpic sub is Facebook with access control.

digital_ins··on Show HN: Your bracelet is your datahub
Nice, moreover because you've focused on the design aspects of it. But since this is ShowHN, I'm gonna ask the usual questions: 1. Data capacity 2. Battery capacity (in mAh) 3. Weight 4. Build Materials composition
digital_ins··on Googlers Living at Google: Tiny Spaces, Probably No Sex
This article implies that engineers who go on to work at Google probably enjoyed tremendously healthy sex lives before they went to work there.
digital_ins··on Show HN: Text Nina, your personal list assistant
probably because people of both genders are most comfortable having personal assistants of the female gender? (Don't blame the messenger for the message)
