diego_sandoval··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Pretty much.

I remember when new Windows versions were still an event: you could read about it on the magazines, people would get excited to try them, people would debate about how pretty/ugly the new UI was, etc.

Nowadays new Windows versions are like some unwanted background noise. I don't even know at what point Windows 10 stopped being the new version and 11 came out, but it went totally unnoticed to me until I heard that Windows 10 was close to EOL a couple of months ago. And then you start dreading the moment that you'll have to migrate and uninstall all the Xbox crap again that they force on you, etc.

LibreOffice is not a real contender to replace MS Office. The real alternatives are:

- OnlyOffice - WPS Office - Google Docs.

I have no mouth, and I must output a seahorse emoji.

If anyone from OpenAI is reading this, I have two complaints:

1. Using the "Projects" thing (Folder organization) makes my browser tab (on Firefox) become unusably slow after a while. I'm basically forced to use the default chats organization, even though I would like to organize my chats in folders.

2. After editing a message that you already sent, you get to select between the different branches of the chat (1/2, and so on), which is cool, but when ChatGPT fails to generate a response in this "branched conversation" context, it will continue failing forever. When your conversation is a single thread and a ChatGPT message fails with an error, re trying usually works and the chat continues normally.

diego_sandoval··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
At the time, YouTube said: “Anything that would go against World Health Organization recommendations would be a violation of our policy.” [1] which, in my opinion, is a pretty extreme stance to take, especially considering that the WHO contradicted itself many times during the pandemic.

Same thing as with em dashes. Some of us have been using em dashes from before ChatGPT.
diego_sandoval··on What makes Claude Code so damn good
It shocks me when people say that LLMs don't make them more productive, because my experience has been the complete opposite, especially with Claude Code.

Either I'm worse than then at programming, to the point that I find an LLM useful and they don't, or they don't know how to use LLMs for coding.

diego_sandoval··on GPT-5: Overdue, overhyped and underwhelming. And that's not the worst of it
The annoyance of having to switch to a different model and losing my context is enough for me to pay the 20 dollars a month.

These models make me much more productive anyway. That is worth far more than $20.

diego_sandoval··on GPT-5
On that same vein, I had just tried Opus 4.1 yesterday, and it succesfully completed tasks that Sonnet 4 and Opus 4 failed at.

> the post-graduation options that continue to provide tracks are also treated as the more "prestigious" options (go to grad school. work at big3/faang, etc).

I think it's the other way around: the more prestigious option becomes the track.

diego_sandoval··on The world could run on older hardware if software optimization was a priority
I generally believe that markets are somewhat efficient.

But somehow, we've ended up with the current state of Windows as the OS that most people use to do their job.

Something went terribly wrong. Maybe the market is just too dumb, maybe it's all the market distortions that have to do with IP, maybe it's the monopolístic practices of Microsoft. I don't know, but in my head, no sane civilization would think that Windows 10/11 is a good OS that everyone should use to optimize our economy.

I'm not talking only about performance, but about the general crappiness of the experience of using it.

diego_sandoval··on Dropbox will require App Indicator support on Linux
For a Linux user, you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem. [1]

diego_sandoval··on Mario Vargas Llosa has died
He was never an outright fascist. The closest that he was to it was when he was young and supported the Cuban Revolution, which he later regretted.

After that, he was a classic liberal through the last 50 years of his life.

diego_sandoval··on Windows 11 is closing a loophole that let you skip making a Microsoft account
What are you supposed to do if you have no Internet connectivity? You basically have a brick on your hands until you can connect it to the Internet? That's ridiculous.

I take this as a good thing, because they're beating each other every few weeks and using benchmarks as evidence.

If these companies start failing to beat the competition, then we should prepare ourselves for very creative writing in the announcements.

diego_sandoval··on Bitter Lesson is about AI agents
The main useful outcome we get from chess is entertainment.

Entertainment that comes from a Human vs. Human match is higher than Human vs. AI, at least for spectators.

But many sectors of the economy don't gain much from it being done by humans. I don't care if my car was made by all humans or all robots, as long as it's the best car I can get for the money.

I think you're extrapolating a bit too much from the specific case of chess.

diego_sandoval··on Apple will soon support encrypted RCS messaging with Android users
Where (and why) is that?

I'm from Chile, and the last time I sent an SMS (or heard of anyone sending an SMS) must have been like 12 years ago.

Ever since then, everyone has used Whatsapp or Telegram instead.
