dickfickling··on Ask HN: Is Google Compute down?
yeah, GCP is having a serious outage. Our site is down, so's Pivotal Tracker

Edit: We're also in Los Angeles, connecting to us-central1. Seems to be a pattern?

dickfickling··on How I Lent My Camera Kit and Had It ‘Legally Stolen’
I don't see why KitSplit wouldn't just cover this out-of-pocket. If it really only happens 0.02% of the time, the cost of reimbursing the lender can't possibly be higher than amount of good-will lost by not doing so.
dickfickling··on Who Wrote the Anti-Trump New York Times Op-Ed? Using Tidytext
Is "'and' vs 'the'" ratios an actual thing? I tried searching for it, but as you can imagine "and vs the" does not return any useful results on google or ddg.
dickfickling··on GCP outage
And Pivotal, and our own system. Looks like an issue with their load balancer / ingress routing platform
dickfickling··on MIT severs ties to company promoting fatal brain uploading
> Most neuroscientists think the ability to recapture memories from brain tissue and re-create a consciousness inside a computer is at best decades away and probably not possible at all.

Did you deliberately ignore the rest of that sentence?

dickfickling··on Show HN: A dating app that matches people based on their password
This is a fascinating premise. I wonder what "02rcV@gwBiE14N2e" says about me...

It should go without saying, but don't use your regular password for this site. There's no way they're using a unique salt for every password in their database, because otherwise it'd be impossible to match people based on the password. Without a unique salt, they're much more vulnerable to a rainbow table attack.

dickfickling··on Show HN: Retro Patents – Tech patents turned into art
I opened this page in a new tab along with a few other articles I meant to read. After a few seconds, the page title started flashing "Don't forget this" at me. Is this a new way to avoid tab abandonment? I'm not normally one of those people who immediately closes a page that annoys me, but holy shit that was jarring. https://www.dropbox.com/s/a4i3yhsg9jpobhj/Screenshot%202017-...

dickfickling··on Walking in L.A.
It used to be much worse. Many (most?) drunk drivers have since turned to Uber or Lyft.
dickfickling··on Filing Taxes After Exercising Start Up Options
the company refunds it. technically, what you generally agree to when you early exercise is to give the company the right to purchase the unvested shares back from you at the original purchase price.
dickfickling··on Filing Taxes After Exercising Start Up Options
the "early exercise" that harryh refers to carries the same handcuffs as an option grant - a (typically) four year vesting schedule. The difference is that instead of vesting "the option to purchase shares" you vest the removal of the option for the company to repurchase the shares it sold you, at the original purchase price. In other words, if I exercise early and leave after two years, the contract states that my employer can purchase my unvested shares back at the original price.

dickfickling··on Microsoft Band SDK Release and Band Studio Introduction
I've had the Microsoft Band for about two months now. For me, it's the perfect combination of pedometer, heart rate monitor, and GPS tracker. It's great for running and removes the need for an uncomfortable chest strap. Although I've found the heart rate monitoring to be inexact to say the least, I'm hopeful that that's something that can be improved via software update.

Very exciting to be able to develop my own applications for it now!

dickfickling··on Enough with the Salts: Updates on Secure Password Schemes
What he's saying is that a salt should be a no-brainer. FTA: "Storing passwords as unsalted hashes is a grievous mistake of course, and breaches disclosing poorly stored passwords are still too common."

He's simply saying that a salt isn't enough to keep your passwords secure - you should also be using a slow hashing / memory intensive hashing function.

dickfickling··on How to Grow a Forest Really Really Fast
While still much more than 100 per acre, they're actually only planting "three to five saplings per square meter."
dickfickling··on Mailpile Beta Release
Are you specifically referring to the "and/or upvote" part of that quote? I understand why asking for upvotes is not allowed, but linking to the HN post is still okay, correct?
dickfickling··on Navdy
This is actually one of my favorite things about riding a motorcycle. It removes the 'safety net' of the car and forces one to pay full attention to the road. Texting is simply out of the question.
dickfickling··on Show HN: A Speed Reading Bookmarklet
Looks like you've actually now surpassed your Readability API limit... oops! Great bookmarklet, by the way
dickfickling··on Swatch Internet Time
I think the idea is that, switching to a decimal system, we would no longer have a use for 7pm - we would just do things at 0.8d
dickfickling··on Kiera Wilmot, student who caused small explosion, won't face charges
While I don't think she ought to have been charged as a criminal, calling this "an unauthorized science experiment which lightly damaged an eight ounce plastic water bottle" is blatantly dishonest. As others have said in previous threads, this girl wasn't conducting a science experiment, she was blowing something up. People could have been injured (google drano bombs). Again, I don't condone legal action against her, but praising her as a scientist doesn't seem like the right course of action either.

Edit: To be clear, I have no problem with explosions - 'for science' or otherwise. I have a problem with explosions on school property, unsanctioned by professors, and without proper (or any) safety equipment.

dickfickling··on Apple blocks Java 7 Mac plugin in OS X
I put Arch on my MBA a while back. I used it exclusively for a while, but ended up going back to OS X. The trackpad drivers just aren't there yet, and with such a limited keyboard I really need the support for 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-finger gestures.
dickfickling··on What a Dead Man Named FM-2030 can tell us about the future of user names
Just a note for the author of this piece - FM-2030 played in the Olympics in 1948, not 1984.
dickfickling··on I've finally implemented the command I keep typing all day: gti
The spokes of the GTI wheels often didn't appear to rotate on my screen because the frame rate was too high - I added a change to make the spokes change after every 5 ticks.

https://github.com/dickfickling/gti

Maybe even just every two ticks (% 4 < 2) would be fine.

edit: Forgot to say: wonderful idea and nice implementation! Simple yet satisfying.
