diabeetusman··on Doctors Say Shortage of Protective Gear Is Dire
That's a valid idea, but it's unfortunately not something she's in control of. All the PPE protocols are coming from people higher than her.

They're also not getting eye protection at all so she's taken to wearing her glasses instead of contacts. Not as good as actual eye protection, but it's better than absolutely nothing.

In short, they don't have what they need.

My sister's an ER doc in Baltimore and they're getting one mask per 12-hour shift. That quantity doesn't protect them from anything or their patients

diabeetusman··on MessagePack: like JSON, but fast and small
buffer_len could be larger than the message, copying some incorrect things into memory.

Similar to HeartBleed, where there wasn't validation on the heartbeat message, and the server would echo back buffer_len instead of just what was sent.

diabeetusman··on The problem with parallelisation
To directly answer your question, graphics cards are Turing complete but they are optimized for a highly parallel workload.

I mean, there are things out there that you simply cannot execute a warrant for; for instance, what I'm thinking at the moment.
diabeetusman··on When your data doesn’t fit in memory: the basic techniques
Let's say that our file consists of nothing but the new line character (1 byte). At 2^64 lines, that's 18.45 EB.

Sure, for files larger than 18.45 EB at the minimum, computing the new line count will take O(log N) time.

I'm all for nitpicking the issues with Big O notation, but this instance doesn't strike me as one.

diabeetusman··on When your data doesn’t fit in memory: the basic techniques
Sorry, isn't there quite a bit of a difference between O(1) and O(log N) space?

My first inclination would be to have a counter at zero, read in a line, write out the counter then write out the line, then increment the counter.

The space complexity here is O(1), is it not?

diabeetusman··on Whatever happened to Six Sigma?
"And as with all fashions, once Six Sigma was picked up by the masses, fashionable companies lost interest and moved on to the next big thing. “These things have a life cycle: They get popular and then people start looking for something else,” says Art Swersey, a professor emeritus of operations research at the Yale School of Management. “These things run their course, and it has run its course.”"

Of course, the RED mags that you're referring to just use normal SATA with the pins moved around.
diabeetusman··on 1Password: Standalone / Local Vault Option Gone?
- The 1Password X extension is standalone (doesn't need the desktop app) so when you have three different Chrome profiles as I do, you have to sign in to 1Password 3 times. Super annoying.

- They force me to store my data with them. Sure they're the most trusted in the industry and do their security audits, but if they get breached, I'm fucked.

- The Command + \ shortcut to autofill and login doesn't work on 1Password X

- They could have just said that their current business model wasn't achieving the goals and that they needed to charge more (I would have paid more/for a subscription) but instead, they beat around the bush by creating a new product that is inferior.

Ignoring other problems mentioned, what would the benefit of such a system be? I suppose it'd be very customizable, but probably expensive (both initial cost plus the cost of the electricity to run it).

The Blackberry Storm (and Storm 2) made clicking in the screen the "tap" action and tapping (but not clicking) the screen the "hover"-equivalent action.
