diab0lic··on Tesla Blown Away as Renault Dominates Europe’s July EV Sales Party
You can take a bounded losses (though also bounded time frame) short position via stock options. Buying a put option achieves this for example.
diab0lic··on Is insurance more expensive in Black neighborhoods?
I'm not the author of the GP post but I don't think (s)he was implying the reason was unknown so much as stating that there IS a reason, but not committing to one single reason so as to not have to argue or justify it.
diab0lic··on Banned math book
While there have been conflicts and violence, and the period of time following the development of nuclear weapons has been too short to say definitively, we've had unprecedented levels of peace since the development of nuclear weapons.
diab0lic··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
I can't help but make the obvious observation here. It's bitcoin... The space has a prior for people who are willing to rush head first into something they don't understand in order to attempt to make a quick buck. I'm surprised it was only 12 BTC.
diab0lic··on Twitter internal panel linked to account hijackings
The post you're replying to is suggesting that manipulating the market like that draws the attention of some very powerful organizations. It'll likely be investigated swiftly and they'll come down on you harshly when compared to the consequences of some Bitcoin scamming.
diab0lic··on Airbnb Is Moving Off of React Native (2018)
I asked a similar question to a sibling comment in this tree but have you considered that there's a lot more than meets the eye at these companies? If the product seems "simple", "done" or "just works" that's a good thing and intentional.
diab0lic··on Airbnb Is Moving Off of React Native (2018)
Have you considered the possibility that the first two companies you've mentioned have just fooled you into thinking their product is complete by offering you a complete feeling experience? There's a difference between "this feels whole" and "there's nothing more to be done here". I would say those two companies have iceberg effects with their products -- the customer interacts with a very focused piece of it.
diab0lic··on Apple will announce move to ARM-based Macs later this month
Is there a way to say "a lot of ARM support issues across apps that I rely on" as though it isn't a bad thing? Hahah. I do agree some instruction set competition would be a good thing, especially if this can further improve battery life on portable devices.
diab0lic··on Ask HN: Best books under 200 pages for developers?
I came here to recommend this one, very digestible and has had a significant impact on the quality of the software I write.
diab0lic··on Forecasting with uncertainty
I would imagine it is targeted at a similar audience, it just lets you answer a better question.

Given the current impression share for my campaigns, what would incremental spend do for CPA and position with 95% certainty?

What would be the expected CPA in 50% of cases to move from avg position of 1.8 to 1.4? This question can be asked in reverse again with a degree of certainty attached.

The answers to the questions you posted are likely to be averages and possibly medians if the posterior is Gaussian (or close enough). Mixing uncertainty into the equation allows you to provide a floor on probabilistic expectation, it also allows you to ask what the best case is, say the 95th percentile.

I've stuck to 95 and medians here but you can use any percentile you'd feel comfortable with.

diab0lic··on Soy protein exerts minor effects on reproductive hormones in young men (2005)
I would also like to know why. I suspect because it has strong potential for controversial tangents. That said I and I suspect others am highly interested in the effects of proteins I consume. I know I avoided soy for a long time because of this study but have now suspected for years (and the current research seems to support this) that there is little concern with soy as a protein source with regards to testosterone levels.
diab0lic··on Show HN: Netflix Open Sources Mantis an Operational Stream Processing Platform
Hey Everyone, one of the Mantis maintainers here and I have two others over my shoulders here to answer your questions.

To elaborate a little Mantis is a platform and ecosystem for building cost-effective operationally focused stream processing applications. We've used it within Netflix for the past several years to provide real-time alerting on SPS [0], real-time anomaly detection [1] and real-time operational outlier detection. [2]

diab0lic··on Open Sourcing Mantis
Hey everyone, one of the Mantis maintainers here. There are a few of us standing by to answer your questions about why we created Mantis and what you can use it for.

In short Mantis is a Platform For Building Cost-Effective, Realtime, Operations-Focused Applications. Internally it has been used for alerting in real-time on KPIs such as Stream Starts per Second [0], our outlier detection platform [1] and scalable anomaly detection with zero machine learning. [2]

diab0lic··on A Cheating Scandal Rocking the Poker World
You're falling victim to the base rate fallacy here, sure the evidence isn't definitive but it is alarmingly close. The probability that his win rate is in fact ~1000bb/100 is effectively zero whereas even if there were only a single cheater on earth the base rate for that would be on the order of one in single digit billions.
diab0lic··on Denial of H1-B visas to India’s largest IT services exporters at all-time high
I would guess the route you outlined is the typical route for Canadians, but one can go from TN -> GC.
diab0lic··on Denial of H1-B visas to India’s largest IT services exporters at all-time high
I'd say this is more atypical than typical. Your spouse would also need to qualify for their own TN which may or may not be the case depending on their profession.
diab0lic··on More money than anyone imagined: an explanation for why the bubble never burst
I don't have any numbers so this is a genuine question: Is a big chunk of AWS revenue from startups? My intuition says most startups have small cloud footprints unless they're dealing with massive scale.
diab0lic··on Libra, 2 Weeks In
Genuinely curious: Does the lightning network provide all of the same guarantees that the standard Bitcoin network provides? What are the downsides? Why isn't the lightning network used all the time instead of the Bitcoin protocol?
diab0lic··on Tesla Model 3 vs. BMW M3 [video]
Sorry I realized I didn't directly answer your question. It was used, ~64000 miles and ~7 years old when I got it.
diab0lic··on Tesla Model 3 vs. BMW M3 [video]
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is still ridiculously in love with their M3 experience. Haha.

Yeah I spent a fair bit on tires too, also on me.

diab0lic··on Tesla Model 3 vs. BMW M3 [video]
It was an E92, and specifically the 2008 model. The most expensive thing I ever did was the brakes. The competition package has floating discs and they were ~$2500 to replace. There are just a lot of design decisions on a car like that which favour performance over maintainability. Another example from when I first got it was the car was the gas tank would only fill up to about 3/4. Turns out because the car is so low the tank has a saddlebag design and a transfer pump transfers gas between the two sides of the tank. Though the truth is even oil is a lot more expensive as it drank six quarts of 10W60.

A newer car would have likely been a little easier on maintenance, but the truth is the thing begs to be driven hard, which also doesn't help. Haha

diab0lic··on Tesla Model 3 vs. BMW M3 [video]
My last car was an E92 M3 MT (with Tech, Premium, Competition packages and a modded exhaust). It was the most fun vehicle I've ever driven. It had plenty of power, and introduced me to the side of cars other than straight line power. It also had plenty of luxury inside, the car was credibly comfortable. All in all I think it compared very favorably to my friends R8 with nearly as much performance and plenty more luxury.

It was however incredibly expensive to maintain, especially those competition package brakes!

A friend of mine has the Model 3, but not the performance version. He hasn't had it long but the torque is very comparable and I'll bet the maintenance is quite a bit lower.

That said I'll miss that RWD behavior and those exhaust notes.

diab0lic··on E*Trade Is Close to Launching Cryptocurrency Trading
I can't tell if this is satire or not but in the event of a loss of power on a large scale, say in a government collapse, a solar panel won't do you much good without the rest of the internet infrastructure.

> The last recent Bullrun to 20k was merely just a peek of it's future price, and an introduction to the mass of the new technology & products that will be used in the upcoming fourth industrial revolution that is around the corner

You accuse the parent of being s victim to fake news and then make a wildly unsubstantiated claim as though it were fact.

> skip the whole government printed fiat regulatory process

The regulatory processes prevent the Bitfinex, Tether, Mt. Gox, Quadrigas, Bitconnects, etc... And that's just off the top of my head.

> Trading cryptos IS the new thing on wall street, If you have not noticed already

You're vastly overstating the influence of crypto on wall street.

diab0lic··on Uber S-1
The driver network is worth precisely zero as a competitive moat if (and only if) you are competing against a company with self driving cars. The customer network is a competitive edge but it is also far less sticky than having a robust network of drivers that riders can depend on.
diab0lic··on San Francisco’s Slow-Motion Suicide
I was restating the line you quoted, and yes precisely SF has very few families compared to other cities in the US. A sister comment seems to indicate that even NYC is 24% (I haven't verified this.) So even for similar urbanization levels SF has very few families.
diab0lic··on San Francisco’s Slow-Motion Suicide
That's all well and good that you disagree, but SF has 13.4% persons under 18 compared to the national average of 22.6% [0]. There are very few kids / families.

diab0lic··on Data.gov is down due to a lapse in government funding
I think I understand you a little better now, thank you.
diab0lic··on Data.gov is down due to a lapse in government funding
I hesitate to get involved in any political discussion here, but I want to understand you.

You seem to be suggesting that it is the objective of Democrats to continue to allow people to enter the country illegally. Do you truly believe that?

The wall being ineffective is a good argument against it, but it isn't the only one. Even an ineffective wall will surely damage the relationship between the two countries it separates, for example.

diab0lic··on Inventory of Homes for Sale Is Rising in Silicon Valley and San Francisco
Bay area housing prices have been in steady decline for a few months now as well.
diab0lic··on Ask HN: How old were the most talented software engineers you've met?
40+

I always wonder about ageism in tech referenced regularly here. Without a doubt the rockstars I know are more experienced and consequently older. If you exclude older software engineers you're probably excluding the best talent and thus can't claim to hire only the top x% of talent.

Note: I don't belong to this group in age or talent.
