Co-op programs are optional, and take place in the summer or in a gap year. The affiliation of companies hosting co-ops is loose, and the schools charge large fees for participating in these programs (with the exception of Waterloo).
Speaking from personal experience, results may vary.
Sometimes 1-liners like "Checkout xyz, been around since 2014" seem a little like an ad leaching off of the original Show HN.
I think it depends strongly on the content and the framing of comment.
Independent of that, I think using the word 'pivot' here is fine. We all know what he means. There might be a different word with a different connotation that some people may be more receptive to. But, pivot is well within the realm of reasonable words to use here.
There may be a recruiter or 2 in there, but they can be good for a chat.
