Chasing keyboard dollars instead of my dreams. I'm just here to say profound things and learn about the world. Looking for software work in PDX.

dgzl··on The impact of cannabis access laws on opioid prescribing
I think it's because the people in charge just don't understand or care about the culture. They see the few problems that stem from marijuana and write off the entire idea. Only slowly has marijuana crept into the mainstream for who we might consider "adults."

I'm not that paranoid.
dgzl··on New Material to Make Lithium Ion Batteries Self-Healing and Easily Recyclable
I think you should just change your news sources, this clearly isn't for you.
dgzl··on Many Japanese children refuse to go to school
I was an exchange student in high school to Japan and I have never seen groups of people more dedicated to both studying and hobbies, especially at the grade-school age.

There are private companies that offer study rooms that HS students rent every weekend. Kendo, soccer, baseball and basketball clubs were really huge at the school I was visiting.

dgzl··on Creating Online Environments That Work Well for Older Users
My grandma owns a tax consulting business and began using computers in the age of Dos. Over the years I would end up with her old computers and that's essentially how I became familiar with them when I was young. About the time I graduated with my CS degree, I realized something.... My grandma isn't actually that capable with computers. Even though she's literally been using them longer than I have, she had only really been performing a few tasks beyond get work, and never really spent time using or learning the nuances of computers and operating systems. I think she never really caught on to the changes Windows and web browsers made over the years, and she just stuck to her work. Now, you might not tell her apart from someone who just started learning.

dgzl··on Samsung chair imprisoned and 24 others found guilty in union-busting case
The department I work at needs to interference with a third-party very frequently and they are Union run. They are the source of much of our pain and frustrations.
dgzl··on The Art of Hosting Good Conversations Online (1998)
For myself, I can't flirt online unless I've met and felt out their personality in person. I can send out official emails to strangers no problem, and I can pick up women in person just fine. But dating apps drive me crazy because I just don't care about you until I've met you.
dgzl··on Cloud kitchens – commercial facilities built to produce food for delivery
A storefront means the owner has investment and thus incentive to succeed. Lacking that, risks cold be smaller and thus success is less important.

I don't think eating meat is bad, but I'll try playing along.

>Imagine hearing that whenever the topic of vegetarian comes up. It's not very useful, and it dilutes the message.

What kind of a message does sacrificing nutrition for hunger send?

dgzl··on We ran the numbers, and there really is a pipeline problem in engineering hiring
We've abandoned the pursuit of equality for the pursuit of equity.
dgzl··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
I've using DDG for a while. Anytime I don't find a good result I just add a g! to my query and it will respect to Google instead.
dgzl··on Tesla Cybertruck
I'm a child of the 90s and the Cybertruck makes me hard as diamonds. Not even kidding, I think it's wicked cool.
dgzl··on Postwoman – a free alternative to Postman
>Emojis feel... complicated. What do they mean?

My first smartphone was a Galaxy S2, and I frequently used an emoji that looked like a character giving a sly winking-type gesture.

It took me several years to realize that this was actually the eye-rolling emoji, and every other system's implantation clearly showed this. Some of the more strange responses I received started to make sense.

dgzl··on Tesla Cybertruck
I still can't tell how much of that was planned.

Regardless, "you're operating system" doesn't imply literal legal ownership, it implies ability to control, as in control when and what gets updated as the OP is upset about.
dgzl··on Microsoft Advertisement Inc.
>I'll do whatever I want with my computer

You pretty much can, I don't understand why you're upset. Windows on the other hand is not your property.

Your laptop in this case is the CD, you own that. Windows is the music that you're renting.

dgzl··on Microsoft Advertisement Inc.
I'm saying Linux is "free and open," you can clearly see that in my comment.
dgzl··on Microsoft Advertisement Inc.
It's not a bad analogy because the point (it's not yours) doesn't depend on the idea of whether the data changes or not. Regardless of if the data evolves or not, it's still not yours to control (to a complete extent).
dgzl··on Microsoft Advertisement Inc.
> it's wrong to have to fight my operating system in this way.

Your operating system? This isn't Linux, this isn't a free and open system.

> Microsoft seem intent on having full control of your system, and they are in a position to take that control as and when they like.

This isn't your system any more than buying a CD makes the music yours. You're renting their system.

dgzl··on Hospitals are a weak spot in U.S. cybersecurity
Sounds like local and state government.
dgzl··on Backcountry.com sues anyone who uses its namesake
I just went to your link. At the top there's a sale sign that says "extra 25% off items with price $xx.73".

REI outlet price: 77.73

After additional sale: $58.30

What's your point again?

dgzl··on Open Letter to the Linux Foundation
I used agree with (and sort of still do) the sentiment of private discrimination. The logic goes like this...

1. People should be able to control their own business 2. If they reject a group of people for a given reason, they can 3. Businesses that done reject this group will gain more business. (Both from the newly released group, and from patrons who are not rejected but are against the discrimination) 4. The rejected people could start their own business as a competitor 5. Discriminatory people/businesses are immediately identified.

It seems like it could just work itself out, but in Patrice I'm not sure.

That sounds like a social credit system. Good behavior raises credit, bad behaviour lowers it.

> how can ... If they cannot trust

Bravery?

dgzl··on Open Letter to the Linux Foundation
Maybe I'm using the wrong verbiage, but I don't see the difference. If the "rules of conduct" extend into your personal life outside the venue, how is that not the same?
dgzl··on Open Letter to the Linux Foundation
Does this count as a social credit system?
