dgregd··on Ballmer Chides Microsoft Over Cloud Revenue Disclosures
Both have serious problems.

1. Many Android apps depend on proprietary Google Play Services. So app customization is needed anyway.

2. Do ordinary people really need unified apps for PCs and mobile?

Currently an easiest way to develop multi platform apps is to create a native mobile app and UI for power users in web browser. There is no need to build a running tracking app as a desktop native app.

Recently notification center was removed from Chrome. To my surprise it turned out that nobody was using it. Well, I also wasn't using it because my (Android|iPhone) is always with me.

dgregd··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
This might be just a coincidence. But I have a strange filling that secret services were involved in both cases.

How hard is to sabotage Falcon 9 mission?

dgregd··on A Serious Conversation about the Future in Space
> Mars is going to be his Spruce Goose

I'm a fan Elon Musk. But I think people are exaggerating that Mars mission. For me it looks like a goal for SpaceX employees. You have to somehow motivate people to work harder. Maybe I'm just a little cynical, but Elon is too smart to believe in this mission.

dgregd··on Google Fi Patent
And most incumbent players seem to like the current state of affairs.

The whole situation is beginning to resemble feudal Europe class system. You cannot sell a car unless you belong to a specific fraternity. You cannot sell Android phones unless you pay licence fees to some company. The free market is shrinking because of various regulations written by lobbyists.

Unfortunately this seems to a trend for societies across the globe. The older society, the more walls higher class builds to protect their status.

dgregd··on Existential crisis at Railsconf
Nginx HTTP Push Module seems to much better solution than EventMachine. So Nginx keeps opened sockets and a Rails app sends messages via ordinary HTTP.

dgregd··on Why are interest rates so low?
1. Banks do not need deposits to lend money to ordinary people. They lend money from FED, which 'prints' them.

2. If interest rates are low then Banks profits should be also low because of small difference between deposits and lending rates. Am I right?

3. Just like casinos in Vegas need capital donors, the ultimate casino also needs capital donors. Don't want to play on Wall Street? No problem, your pension fund (dumb money) is more than enough.

dgregd··on Why are interest rates so low?
> many bank/insurance/pension calculations

It will also clearly show how big banks, HFT companies are making huge profits. They are slowly pulling money out of your pension fund.

Banks do not produce, they have no income from dividends, so how they earn?

dgregd··on Why are interest rates so low?
The next question is why _developed_ countries are taking the debt.
dgregd··on Many McGill Education Students Cannot Calculate an Average
In my country was a politician who was outraged by the fact that 50% of people earn below the national average.
dgregd··on Ubuntu smartphone offers alternative to apps
Slightly off topic, Ubuntu and Redhat are building their own display servers, Mir and Wayland. Why they can't simply use SurfaceFlinger? It should be simpler to add X Server emulation to SurfaceFlinger than to create whole display server from scratch.
dgregd··on What Blocks Ruby and Python from Getting to JavaScript V8 Speed?
I asked this question because I was a little bit frustrated with one page in my app which rendered in 800ms. 100ms was db time, the rest it was Ruby.

Sure, the answers won't help to solve my _specific_ problem. However in general I like to known how things work. It is not enough for me to read ordinary info about Ruby symbols. I have to read Ruby source code to understand them better (1) Thanks to this I understand Ruby symbols gc issue, a new feature of Ruby 2.2

Even more important is _intuition_ one can build reading the answers. Intuition about languages in general. I really like duck typing languages. Sometimes I need raw performance. So should I plan migration to statically typed languages (Java, Scala)? Or is it better to invest my time into learning Dart? Does Dart have _potential_ to solve my specific requirements?

As a software architect I have to predict a future a bit. And I must say that nostrademons answer helped me to learn something new today.

dgregd··on Immigration is about talent, not costs
In short term immigrants definitely have negative impact on wages.

However, in long term brain drain helps Silicon Valley to maintain its software capital of the world status.

Nokia mainly depended on local workforce. From Poland it is much closer to Finland than to US. But it was Google US which hired my brightest school mates.

dgregd··on “Start Rails 5 development”
Two years ago I built an app using Angular. Of curse using Rails as the back-end. As a whole this wasn't a good experience. A such simple thing like authorization took a day or two to implement, solution looked like a one big hack.

However some SPA/Angular features worked beautiful. Two way data binding and local templates allow to build complex forms very easy. Data validation of one to many associations was straightforward. In Rails we have to use accepts_nested_attributes_for. It is so 'nice' that some people want to move nested attributes functionality to an external gem.

The biggest thing Rails is missing: components. There is a discussion today on HN [1] about this. Angular, web components, HTTP2 might really allow to build real object oriented web apps. In Rails there is a view.erb file and that's it [2].

I guess that competition will force developers to build even more user friendly and responsive apps. By that I mean no more separate pages to add a simple record. New apps will allow to click on a record, edit it in place and save with enter. And to do that well we need SPA architecture.

[1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8671590 [2] 10 years ago it was a big thing. At that time typical app is was a bunch of PHP files.

dgregd··on “Start Rails 5 development”
Would you please explain why my comment have been down-voted?
dgregd··on “Start Rails 5 development”
Ruby on Rails is still the most productive why to build web apps. Turbolinks prolonged Rails life cycle, as the best web framework, by two or three years.

However SPA are the future. Maybe Angular 2 will be good enough to switch. Maybe something build after Angular 2.

dgregd··on IBM Plunges as CEO Abandons 2015 Earnings Forecast
> management said no

Because management would have more work and responsibility with your solution.

> what they paid hundreds of thousands in licensing fees and man hours to do the same job

They spent shareholders money. So they don't care about costs. And what looks better in resume: a) managed one programmer b) two million dollars software system deployment

If these guys have created a start-up and payed with their own money, I guarantee they would have chosen your solution.

dgregd··on Ask HN: Why hasn't Dart become mainstream?
Because it has too few good libraries and frameworks. For example I am waiting for a good Postgresql driver. The existing drivers have _async_ API.
dgregd··on RubyMotion 3.0 Sneak Peek: Android Support
BTW is there something like PhoneGap but for desktops (Win, Linux, OSX)? Or even better, Ruby integrated with Webkit.
dgregd··on Google+ Head Vic Gundotra Leaving Company
> There are very real reasons why "average" people need alternate identities online.

However alternate identities also allow for click fraud things and so on.

We don't know exactly why Google guys wanted so much to eliminate faked identities.

dgregd··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Office package for Internet and open source era. MS Office concept was good in 1990. Google Docs just replaced local drive with cloud drive.

Tools for developers are really good. IDEs and DVCS are pleasure to work with. But try to work on a spec, RfP, Offer, etc. with Word and Outlook. Online wikis are quite good but it is not possible to send them via email to a third party.

My idea for a text editor: * storage: wiki text files + embedded git repo * save all to a single file, but with possibility to access and edit the contents via web server / web app * possibility to squash all edits and send a clean copy (branch) as an attachment * possibility to incorporate changes sent back, thanks to DVCS * two edit modes: WYSIWYG and markdown style for experts * two client modes: standalone with thick client (based on Webkit) and html5 client * possibility to access and modify the contents via APIs (Java, Ruby, ...) * optimized for screens, not for A4 / US letter pages

You get the idea. Corporations would love something like this.

dgregd··on Apple Removes Shadow DOM from Safari
I cannot ignore IE9.
dgregd··on Apple Removes Shadow DOM from Safari
So nowadays to Apple innovation means to increase fps from 59 to 60?

Shadow DOM might be really, really useful for millions of developers building ordinary business web apps. It is 2014 and would be good to add new things like Shadow DOM, new layout models so in _2020_ there will be standard and a sane way to center a ... div.

dgregd··on China bans new Bitcoin deposits
Newton's niece Catherine Conduitt reported that he "lost twenty thousand pounds. Of this, however, he never much liked to hear…" This was a fortune at the time (equivalent to about £2.4 million in present day terms

So you're in good company.

dgregd··on Bank of America's Research Report on Bitcoin [pdf]
These all Bitcoin PR actions are quite similar to situation on gold market few years ago. And we know what happened with gold prices.

US is exporting "green paper" and importing physical goods. Do you really believe that the US government and banksters will opt out of all fiat currency benefits?

It is interesting that China government is honest enough to tell the people what Bitcoin really is.

dgregd··on China Bans Financial Companies From Bitcoin Transactions
So in China Bitcoin status is equal to World of Warcraft goods (swords, shields, etc)? I mean WoW goods one can buy on eBay.
dgregd··on Bitcoins: The Second Biggest Ponzi Scheme in History
I known that it is possible to lower prices denominated in Bitcoins. However this is the deflation problem I am taking about.
