dgllghr··on Electric heat to cost 77 percent more than natural gas, federal agency says
It really sucks because even with the government rebates, it’s still a big capital expense that takes years to be paid back. The good news is that since we have started investing in and incentivizing heat pump technology now, it will be the cheap option as heating systems fail over the next few decades. I think the government report should include this reality but also highlight heat pump adoption as it is currently incentivized and adoption is growing. It’s weird to me that they didn’t highlight the heat pump aspect as much
dgllghr··on Electric heat to cost 77 percent more than natural gas, federal agency says
Does electric heat mean heat pumps or radiant? Because we have saved a bunch of money switching our heat from natural gas to heat pump
dgllghr··on SQLite Begin Concurrent
Thank you for clarifying!
dgllghr··on SQLite Begin Concurrent
I don't know how I feel about this implementation. On the one hand, I love its simplicity and the fact that you still have Serializable transactions. On the other hand, having conflicts at the page level means that the occurrence of conflicts may be surprising because it's based on this fuzzy notion of having values "close together". Close together changes based on your page size configuration and, as the article points out, is not necessarily correlated with a natural key in ROWID tables. I would be very interested to see this system in use in a few real applications to get an sense of how much this really matters.
dgllghr··on Hollywood movie aside, just how good a physicist was Oppenheimer?
Oppenheimer was a genius, but his superpower was being good at both theoretical and practical physics. He did Nobel-prize level work and also ran the Manhattan Project. I think that’s comparable to getting the gold medal at the Olympics for 2 different sports.

General Leslie Groves thought very highly of Oppenheimer, and if you got the stamp of approval from Groves, you were doing something right.

Oppenheimer was dragged through the mud during the red scare and his name is still tarnished because of that. It is ironic and a little sad that he was awarded the Fermi medal once his name was finally cleared because Fermi worked for him during the Manhattan Project. It probably would have been the Oppenheimer Medal if it weren’t for Senator McCarthy.

Oppenheimer beat Heisenberg (also a pretty smart guy) to the bomb and not by a little either. And thank whatever higher power is out there he did.

(I am reusing most of my comment from a different story)

Oppenheimer was a genius both in theoretical and practical physics work. It is a shame that he doesn’t have a better reputation today. And when it comes to his “campaign”, well, he had good reasons for his concerns. The second atomic bomb dropped on Japan was dropped without the president’s knowledge! He realized that we were not ready for that weapon and still aren’t to this day.

dgllghr··on Ask HN: Best Resources and Books for a Soon-to-Be-Dad?
I haven’t read Thirty Million Words but I second the idea of talking to your child. A lot. I try to tell mine what we are doing, what we are about to do, why we are doing things the way we are, etc. Also, because I don’t always succeed at explaining everything all the time, he asks a bunch of questions! So I try to answer each of his questions in a way he can comprehend as best I can. I’ve noticed that doing all of that, makes him happier, more confident, and less likely to have emotional outbursts.

This is also true of Luke in Return of the Jedi. Luke does nothing to help destroy the death star and Vader and the emperor would have probably been killed when it was destroyed without Luke being there (okay, maybe they would have escaped but it doesn’t feel like Luke was super impactful)
dgllghr··on American EVs reduced gasoline consumption by just 0.54% in 2021
EVs have also been targeting a very specific segment of the market, which is not the most gas guzzling segment. Once EVs really move into the big SUV, pickup truck, delivery vehicle, and 18-wheeler segments, the gasoline consumption reduction will be much more significant compared to the % of vehicles on the road that are electric.
dgllghr··on Why I use Jellyfin for my home media library
I just started using Jellyfin and have been loving it! It works great and it has an impressively professional and polished UI for an open source project. The Jellyfin team is doing great work!

A quick Wikipedia search yields these quotes from her: “ Palestinian Arabs [are] people who breed and bleed and advertise their misery” and Jewish people have “ squeamishness about the shootings and beatings meted out to the breeders”. Wow. Repulsive is absolutely the right word to describe her

LANA shoots a gun

ARCHER: Lana, no! You'll kill us all!

LAMMERS: For the last time, you idiot! It's not hydrogen! It's helium!

LANA: And what about that are you still not getting, exactly?

ARCHER: Well, obviously the core concept, Lana. Sorry I didn't go to space camp.

So Ian Fleming was an intelligence operative with creativity and an author with creativity. He sounds like a cool and successful person! This article feels hellbent on putting a negative spin on his life
dgllghr··on How the Pentagon started taking UFOs seriously
The real question to me is: is the Pentagon actually taking the possibility of alien visitors seriously or are they using aliens as a cover for drones that have been able to infiltrate US airspace? It seems too easy for them to combine actual unidentified flying object sightings with sightings that the Pentagon knows are of infiltrating drones in order to create a fog around the whole situation
dgllghr··on Gnome 40
Yea gnome gets a lot of hate, but I've been using it as a daily driver for a few years and I have a slick, productive workflow with minimal customization. It's free software, it looks nice, and every release is a nice improvement.
dgllghr··on Multicore OCaml: Feb 2021 with new preprint on Effect Handlers
Cool! Glad to hear there is still work being done there. I was able to find the presentation I was thinking of: https://kcsrk.info/slides/handlers_edinburgh.pdf Specifically the part about Preemptive Multithreading
dgllghr··on Multicore OCaml: Feb 2021 with new preprint on Effect Handlers
I'm very excited for this! I remember seeing a presentation a few years ago that mentioned that OCaml could use effect handlers to implement preemption in fibers. I can't seem to find that presentation, but I believe it mentioned being able to interrupt a fiber with an effect. Is that something that is in the plans or was that just an early idea?
dgllghr··on Pseudophilosophy encourages confused, self-indulgent thinking
The thing about Foucault that makes his work meaningful to me is how he hit the nail on the head about how power is changing and continuing to change in society. It has become diffuse and self-perpetuating. It lacks a direct, physical force but still coerces. It is no longer socially acceptable or legal for men to withhold food from their wives, but women suffer from eating disorders in large numbers. Slavery is no longer legal in the US, but a large % of black people are incarcerated and forced to do free labor. The internet has given us access to an enormous amount of information, and yet we are addicted to social media and controlled by algorithms.

I think the same can be said about Freud, Marx, and Nietzsche. A lot of their work does not hold up, but within their work are gems of insight that have stood the test of time. Just because they do not adhere to the methodologies of analytical philosophy does not mean that they haven't produced important thought.

dgllghr··on Baby Foods Are Tainted with Dangerous Levels of Heavy Metals [pdf]
The EU should sell a food and baby product certification to companies in other countries for products that meet their health and safety standards. I live in the US and I would pay a significant premium products with an official EU health and safety certification.
dgllghr··on Baby Foods Are Tainted with Dangerous Levels of Heavy Metals [pdf]
I don’t have good answers to your questions, but you can still order European baby foods like the Dutch version of HiPP at some smaller vendors like littlebundle.com. We have been feeding this to my infant son for over a month now and he has been doing great.

dgllghr··on Ask HN: How are you holding up?
I identify with a lot of what you say. As someone who is (as you say) "pro-equality-altruistic" but not "anti-tribal-free-speech-absolutist", one thing I want to say is that I don't hate you. I don't even dislike you. I feel like the media and social media are making it feel like we all hate each other for tiny differences in our worldviews. I've come to believe that those spaces are dominated by the most entrenched, vocal, spiteful people. If you care about equality and altruism in your heart, I'm with you. And I bet a lot more people are with you than you think.
dgllghr··on Clubhouse announces new collaboration tool, free project management platform
I put together a custom visualization of our projects in a format that I thought made a lot of sense. My wife, who is a mechanical engineer, took one look at it and said “that’s a Gantt chart.” I have been hooked on Gantt charts ever since, and I wish that software engineering tools would embrace and integrate Gantt charts.
