dgivney··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
Oh of course you can criticise the result, I more found it interesting that a billion dollar, optimized search experience thought your false positive was actually a top result. A huge variance in the subjectivity between your experience and their invested reasoning.

But while we're speculating on how the domain the appears at the top of the list, let me hazard a guess...

Philosophy.com was registered in 1999 and according to waybackmachine, has been selling cosmetics on the site since 2000 (20+ years). The company sold in 2010 for ~$1B to a holding company with revenues of $10B+ today (Unfortunately I couldn't find how much it contributes to that revenue). According to Wikipedia, the Philosophy brand has been endorsed by celebrities, including "long-time endorser" Oprah Winfrey, possibly the biggest endorsement you could get for their industry/demographic.

I think it is a long established business, with strong revenues and there's more people online searching for cosmetic brands than for philosophers.

In the same way (admittedly in the extreme) when I'm researching deforestation and I query to see how things are going for the 'amazon', the top result is another successful company registered pre 2000, with strong revenues that most likely attracts more visitors..

dgivney··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
I think you have some great feedback here but for me it also highlights how subjective search results can be for individuals - for example, these false positives that you mention (b2, b3) appear as the top result on Google for me for that query.

It makes me think there must be some fairly large segment of the population that want that domain returned as a result for their query, no?

dgivney··on Financial Secrecy Index
Honestly, I know nothing about them but the largest donor on that list is a USA based NGO..

dgivney··on Financial Secrecy Index
> Russia and China score extremely well, and the US is the second worst?

This is a list of countries that benefit from capital flight from countries such as Russia and China.

dgivney··on Show HN: URL Shortener Optimized for QR Code
Interesting use case, I see. You can use the URL shortener on the homepage to create links but yes, the custom keywords, custom domains and link analytics require a small one-off payment for personal use. I did this thinking it will prevent spam but I understand it's probably important - I will create some trail accounts and send you one this weekend.
dgivney··on Show HN: URL Shortener Optimized for QR Code
Hi StavrosK

I launched a URL Shortener last month that supports custom keywords, deleting links & custom domains. The default domain is a grandfathered .com emoji domain that I thought looked like a Ninja Star so I called the service Ninja Linka (marketing writes itself really).

Here's the homepage: https://ninjalinka.com

More info in the API Docs: https://ninjalinka.com/docs/1.0/home

Out of interest, what is your use case for deleting your links?

dgivney··on A new design ship in the Philippines is partly powered by wave energy
You are correct for that time period and technology. Linen sails on square rigged vessels required directional winds towards your destination, as they were only efficient for downwind sailing.

Things have greatly improved with the wide adoption of the Bermuda Rig allowing you to efficiently set a course on all points of sail; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bermuda_rig

There's many challenges for sailing commercial freight but I don't think this would be as much of an issue these days.

dgivney··on How much money can you make on Mechanical Turk?
A somewhat interesting article which strongly turns into a puff piece of MT. I started scrolling to the bottom to find out who was paying for this content and there it was "In his book, Side Hustle From Home: How To Make Money Online With Amazon Mechanical Turk"..

I wonder just how does he manage a new baby, a side hustle that fills every minute with productive money-making and writing a book!.. The author really should be writing a book about his exceptional time management skills instead.

dgivney··on Show HN: A static file server in x86 Assembly
I love the code style of your repo. It's very easy to read and I'm a sucker for the 0x80 interrupt call syntax. It just makes it feel more 'assembly'..

Thanks for posting - looking forward to going through it properly this weekend!..

dgivney··on What's new in Ubuntu 19.04
Me too, I spent 3 days with 18.04 and promptly downgraded again.
dgivney··on Show HN: Forget about React Router. Modern and clean routing with hooks
Coming from a web background, this approach makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you, I'll definitely take it for a spin.
dgivney··on The Expendables: Life in the French Foreign Legion (2012)
If you're keen to remove the romance I can recommend 'Marching with the Devil' by David Mason. It's a raw first-hand account of the Legion during the late 80s and describes the author's boyhood dream of joining vs the reality of his situation in the Legion.

dgivney··on Gotify – a self-hosted push-notifications service
> what is this project about? Someone subscribed for notifications and then this server sends them?

Exactly that. A device registers with the server and then there's a REST API or CLI binary that you can use to send it push notification messages.

dgivney··on Gotify – a self-hosted push-notifications service
I think Push API is an industry standard but there is this W3 draft https://www.w3.org/TR/push-api/

But yes, it's essentially implemented the same across iOS/Android and browsers like Chrome, FF, Edge etc. There are services such as Amazon SNS or Google Firebase that provide a single interface which can talk to all the slightly different implementations.

In a nutshell the device registers to the server and receives an identifier token. Then a server can send messages to that identifier and the message will be displayed on the screen. Some providers allow for Icon, Audio and some Actions to also be sent as part of the message payload.

dgivney··on Gotify – a self-hosted push-notifications service
From what I can tell it appears to be a replacement FCM/APNS. The client subscribes directly via websocket to a self-hosted server (Go binary).

New messages in the queue are then notified (gotified) via the websocket. https://gotify.net/api-docs#/message/streamMessages

The payload can be picked up and managed via REST API as well.

I'm building a similar solution for a slightly different usecase, so wanted to have a look under the hood. There's nothing I can see that would stop you using this for iOS so maybe they just don't have a iOS dev on the project.

Edit: Ah, here's why. https://github.com/gotify/server/issues/87

dgivney··on Linux Desktop Setup
I'm also a Vista era convert to linux and still using a practically default Ubuntu image. However this fits with my original ethos for changing - at the time I was running a brand new business and just didn't have time to trouble shoot my OS. I ran Debian for about 6months before realizing that my time at work could be better spent focusing on my customers instead.

It's liberating to know I can burn everything down, reinstall, pull my dot files from git and get coding again.

dgivney··on Show HN: Software Stickers Co – Simple Software Funding
I like the idea of this but there's something not quite right.

When you look at the front page you see all projects have had $5 dollars worth of stickers purchased. http://tinyimg.io/i/DfTAcu4.png

But then you click through to purchase a sticker and the minimum purchase is actually $10. http://tinyimg.io/i/saXcgTw.png

That feels a bit disingenuous and scammy.

dgivney··on Show HN: I built my first product without coding – TV Premiere Alert
Hey Rizzke

Congratulations on launching!..

I've been coding commercially for nearly 20 years and just wanted to say it's fantastic to see that you were able to launch a product without needing to code anything.

While this product isn't for me, it makes me excited to think that we're approaching a time where we have the tools for solo non-technical founders to test out their ideas and deliver a MVP to market. Good luck everything.

dgivney··on Soulja Boy Is Selling Cheap Emulators as His Own Consoles
> Clearly he's just shamelessly pitching a drop-shippable console with some branding on it.

Actually there's no branding on it either - it's straight drop-shipping from AliExpress.

dgivney··on Show HN: SaaS webframework
It's a bit concerning when you see a site pushing an Open Source PHP framework that has had no serious commits in 3 years.

Especially when they haven't even updated the copyright in their footer this year.

dgivney··on A History of the Sentence "Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo." (1999-2015)
A few years ago I created a syntactically correct, but semantically meaningless programming language based on this.

Devoid of syntactic sugar, Buffalo Lang has only one token.

dgivney··on Show HN: Game Play of video game I'm working on
I love the flight path modeling on those planes. So awesome to see it banking into the turns at such an early stage in development. It reminds me of games I used to build. I can tell you've put a lot of work in so far, keep it up man!..

What are you building it in?

I was so excited to see AA gun go off and then BOOM, tennis ball comes out!.. ;)
