dgfitz··on Love C, hate C: Web framework memory problems
It’s interesting, over the past 15 years I’ve had occasion to work with other c/c++ devs on various contracts, probably 50ish distinct different companies. Not once has rust even come up in casual conversation.
dgfitz··on They Don't Have the Money: OpenAI Edition
Ha that feels like the butt of this whole joke: “no we’re literally creating a god, what don’t you people understand? But this one will be a benevolent and wise god, not like a shitty one. Trust me.”
dgfitz··on Ask HN: What's the best hackable smart TV?
Agree. I have two recent Samsung smart tvs. The screen quality I like (OLED) but everything else about them I hate. I use a PS5 as an entry point for the tv, after the atrocious “tv boot up to functional time” which is a phrase I never considered having to say 20 years ago.
dgfitz··on It's OpenAI's world, we're just living in it
It’s funny how some people think shitty lawyers are good and some people think good lawyers are shitty, huh?
dgfitz··on It's OpenAI's world, we're just living in it
With a little bit of lag time (school) we could have a metric fuckton of doctors. We have a metric fuckton of shitty lawyers. Doctors are artificially gated in the US

What’s the joke? “What do you call the person who graduated last in their class from med school? A doctor.”

dgfitz··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
> Is there even a way to cut this pollution out in the future?

No, is the short answer.

dgfitz··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
Ironically, in the UUV space, they use the term “flying” when talking about controlling UUVs.
dgfitz··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
> the attack described in the article is triggered by a rare or unique token combination

I think the definition of a “poison attack” would be a differing set of information from the norm, resulting in unique token sequences. No?

Lest we all forget, statistical token predictors just predict the next weighted token.

dgfitz··on One-man campaign ravages EU 'Chat Control' bill
No, the “promise” is forced. It’s like an arranged marriage.
dgfitz··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
s/latent reasoning/next token prediction with guardrails
dgfitz··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
A single malicious scientific study can fool thousands or perhaps millions of real people as that fact gets repeated in different forms and amplified with nobody checking for a valid source. Llms are no more robust.
dgfitz··on Using a laptop as an HDMI monitor for an SBC
I was stuck in a very remote location trying to update vehicle software. I needed both a monitor and keyboard (long story, serial wasn't outputting, no ssh, partition table was hosed) and I had neither a keyboard nor a monitor.

I now carry a little HDMI screen and not one but two portable keyboards with me for all work travel. One of the keyboards is a larger but rolls up, the other is tiny but also has a mouse built into a touchpad.

These devices have saved my bacon more than a few times. Highly recommend.

dgfitz··on One-man campaign ravages EU 'Chat Control' bill
You’re conflating two things and ignoring the thrust of the point: nobody buys a fast car to drive it slowly. Maybe some people do, the vast majority do not.

If promises about licenses meant a damn, we wouldn’t have speeding cameras.

dgfitz··on One-man campaign ravages EU 'Chat Control' bill
Nobody does that.
dgfitz··on Investing in America 2025
Sure doesn’t.
dgfitz··on Investing in America 2025
What, the 4th biggest economy in the world needs an investment? Aren’t they supposed to be the investors?
dgfitz··on German government comes out against Chat Control
“This person is corrupt!”

Is that an opinion or a harmful false claim?

dgfitz··on The murky economics of the data-centre investment boom
Sure seems like a combination of TINA and massive amounts of hope.
dgfitz··on America is now one big bet on AI
As long as you realize a strong Chinese dollar is the worst thing that could happen to China right now, and as long as we just excuse away the whole “LLMs make more money than they cost” (which they absolutely do not) sure thing.
dgfitz··on America is now one big bet on AI
> If there is an AI race, I have zero doubt that China WILL win.

A race to what? What does the winner get? What does the loser get? What does 'winning' even fucking mean? My statistical next token predictor is better than your statistical next token predictor?

dgfitz··on The worrying kink in this job openings, unemployment curve
The quote I quoted said, quite literally, “under Biden” I offered no new information
dgfitz··on The worrying kink in this job openings, unemployment curve
> IIRC, under Biden, inflation was stoked by the Covid stimulus(arguably necessary to avoid rapid deflation due to Covid, but probably kept for too long)

I think you answered your own question.

dgfitz··on Social Cooling (2017)
I can’t tell you much I recommend getting off social media.

I post here, and sometimes in a dynasty football reddit.

You’ll realize how evil the whole thing is.

dgfitz··on Social Cooling (2017)
Are you making an analogy of having a moral obligation to engage in a flame war online?
dgfitz··on OpenAI's hunger for computing power
I also feel like there is a bubble.

However, looking at it impartially, it seems to mean sama is planning on making more money. Which seems to conclude in ads are incoming.

dgfitz··on Europe Can No Longer Ignore That It's Under Russian Attack
Why would the US want to fight a proxy war with Russia? Before the recent Ukraine invasion, nobody really cared about Russia. They were just kind of around, cheating at the Olympics was like the big news if anyone talked about Russia.

What does Russia have that US would want to fight a proxy war over? Certainly isn’t technology or natural resources.

dgfitz··on Offline card payments should be possible no later than 1 July 2026
It would be a "unique" situation. Most AMTs (not all, but most) only dispense $20 bills, the rarer ones will dispense $5s or $10s, and they're rare enough that I make a note of them. I have never encountered an ATM that gives a $50.

Your best bet of happening into a $50 is if you go to a bank for an in-person withdraw and they ask you for preferred denominations. Generally the money is dispensed in $20s even there unless specified.

Your second best bet would be if you're selling something "on the side" and the purchaser uses a $50 in a transaction, which I would say is also rare these days, most people use Venmo or equiv.

Your best bet of handling a $50 is probably as a bartender, or of course as a bank teller.

I have held $50s a few times in my life, and even my reaction is "huh, a $50, don't see those often"

dgfitz··on Europe Can No Longer Ignore That It's Under Russian Attack
Best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is today.

What is the plan today?

dgfitz··on Wealth tax would be deadly for French economy, says Europe's richest man
> If the tax "worked" and reduced their wealth

There is a disconnect between those two ideas. The tax doesn't need to reduce their wealth. Wealthy people generally continue to make money, usually without even having to try or work.

dgfitz··on Building the heap: racking 30 petabytes of hard drives for pretraining
I agree with you, but I also don’t do webdev. Docker seems neat, I’ve dabbled just to understand the stack and how it works. Not much of a container person I realized. Closest I get is spinning out yocto images and flashing them to hardware. Same image every time with updated versions of software. So maybe kind of like docker in the abstract sense, I suppose.

I’m mid-way through my career at this point and I’m hoping to skip the web/cloud bit, I just don’t enjoy it as much as I do hw/sw integrations.
