dfxm12··on Flock's CEO Faced Me After Its Cameras Led to My Wrongful Stop
It's hard when people are paying for the cameras. This is capitalism. Money is always the #1 priority & we have little relative to those pushing for the surveillance state.
dfxm12··on TSA Privatization Returns Airport Security to a Dangerous Past
This is going to be end up being like the reflecting pool, but on a grander scale. Tax payers are going to end up paying Trump's incompetent friends a ton of money to just make flying an even worse experience.
dfxm12··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
If it's the salted anchovies I'm thinking of what I'm thinking of (like in the yt video in your sibling comment), salted anchovies are a lot cheaper and more versatile (the downside is that more processing is required on your end). Colatura is great in sauces, but you can use whole anchovy filets to make a gilda in addition to adding flavor to a sauce.
dfxm12··on Ask HN: What are the viable alternatives to DuckDuckGo?
For me, most of the time they don't and instead tell me something I already know or make some assertion with no attribution. Pre-AI, I usually found my answer among the first few results anyway, most often the first. I find searching hard in general in a post AI world since almost all of the first few pages of results are either AI blog spam or links to shopping websites. The signal to noise ratio has just gotten untenably poor.
dfxm12··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
Rotten? Do you have any more info about this product, even a name? Salted anchovies are common in at least Spain, Italy & Portugal (and you usually rinse off the excess salt and optionally store them in olive oil for a while before consuming), but I've never seen a "rotten" anchovy...
dfxm12··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
It's hard to say, depending on how far back your idea of "a few years ago" might be or where exactly you ate. After all, Japan has a lot of sushi restaurants and even different sushi styles. For example, you definitely wouldn't find salmon in an edomae sushi restaurant.

For reference, salmon was the most popular choice in conveyor belt sushi places 3 years ago. https://www.nippon.com/en/japan-data/h01627/

dfxm12··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
No. Sometimes the spill checker just auto co-wrecks people.
dfxm12··on When transit passes were designed by hand (2022)
Having something as mundane as a transit pass be designed so beautifully installs a sense of civic pride. Plus, it employs artists. Both of these things are important for a community.

Transit passes may have been phased out in a lot of places, but there are lots of opportunities for a city to design and display public art.

dfxm12··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
It's not like they're showing ads on fridges/cars in the commercials or the display units in Lowe's/the dealership. By the time you see the ad, it's too much of a hassle to return it, even if you can...
dfxm12··on Big Food vs. the People
1MM in any currency doesn't sound like a lot, especially relative to who they're up against...
dfxm12··on Big Food vs. the People
No. The case can be settled out of court. This doesn't necessarily mean lawsuits are misleading or terrible as measures.
dfxm12··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
I asked a coworker who gave a few reasons. It's easier/cheaper to buy in bulk. He gets them by the case. He also like sweet flavors more than bitter flavors.
dfxm12··on Premier league bans gambling sponsors
It varies, but in any case, I doubt it's cheap relative to much: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_football_sponsorship
dfxm12··on Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick
I doubt there ever was a time/environment. Snake oil has been around consistently for a very long time.
dfxm12··on Europe's fires are just the start
Setting aside the fact that I want to leave things in a good place for my kids, neighbors' kids, nieces, nephews and all their friends...

Setting aside the fact that even if I was so selfish to care about my personal legacy, I'd want the world around long enough to learn about it...

there's no point freezing and living off leaves for the next few decades

I don't think the ask here is so unreasonable. It's disingenuous to frame it this way.

dfxm12··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
Smart TVs don't exist for your convenience. They exist to track your behavior and serve you ads. If they happen to have some hackability, it's an accident or happy coincidence.
dfxm12··on User Interfaces of the Demo Scene
These aren't all dev tools. Plus, for devs, it was a way to show off. For end users, fun is a consideration as well.

If you're curious, it's not hard to get an emulator up and running. Some of this software can even run in the Internet Archive. Here's a link to fast tracker II: https://archive.org/details/msdos_Fast_Tracker_2_1994

dfxm12··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
No. Knowingly reporting lies (including lies by omission) isn't "neutral".
dfxm12··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
I suspect this is more due to cost cutting and the fact that context would likely paint the people who own these media outlets in a bad light. Keeping their readers underinformed is win-win for them.
dfxm12··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
The study doesn't appear to be blind (not sure how you can do a blind cooking test). Also, The panellists were satisfied with cooking when they could control the heat as desired suggests inexperience with electric is a part of preference (as a personal anecdote, it took me a few months to get used to an electric stove in a new house after a lifetime of cooking on gas). This is also over a decade old. There have been some advancements in electric cookery since.
dfxm12··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
Simple fix: don't cook with extra virgin olive oil on high heat. The smoke point is one reason. Flavor is another. Cost is a third (less expensive fats are better suited for this task)
dfxm12··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
I think the advice is to avoid using it as a daily driver. If you only have nonstick and carbon steel pans, you might not want to cook something acidic in the carbon steel as it will kill the seasoning. If you have nonstick and stainless steel, you can use the SS for that.

On the otherhand, cooking eggs in nonstick might be easier/require less fat than working with stainless steel.

Nonstick also generally has a lower rated max temp, so avoid using it in the broiler...

All this is to say, it's a trade-off for convenience. With the right technique, or if you want to spend time to rebuild seasoning, you can pretty much use whatever pans you want to cook whatever you want. These types of non-stick pans are relatively new in the world of cooking.

dfxm12··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
If you're looking to switch, difficulty around cooking technique for stainless steel, carbon steel & cast iron is overblown. Same with seasoning/cleaning the latter two. Trust me, if I can figure it out, you can too.
dfxm12··on Future euro banknote design proposals
They should put something like a USB-C connector on the front. Maybe IGP products.

A small reminder of what Europe can do make people's lives easier or better.

dfxm12··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
Going back over a decade (ETA, actually, wow, over two decades), I used to go to shows, not only to see the bands, but also to make sure I got the poster. This one, made by Tim Gough, escaped me: http://www.oldskull.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/timgough-...
dfxm12··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
To me, it feels somewhat anti-social. Going from working with the community on the flyer (assuming, like you said, it was hand drawn by a janitor or teacher or maybe even a student) to working with no one. Why can't we invite the community to work on things like this? If we don't have time, we should make time for it, like a little bit of class time for the students to draw a flyer. Children, schools and community 3rd places like pools are worth it!
dfxm12··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
"Quaint and basic" does not equate to "careless". Also, I wouldn't describe any of the good pizza places I've been to in the city as "messy". If you have some place or some piece of advertising in mind, do please share it.
dfxm12··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
It's generally bad vibes because honestly, they're ugly. If you're flat broke, are too many non ugly templates out there. Hiring a local person to do a job like this isn't that expensive, either. All else fails, there's a certain charm in an honest diy poster that AI lacks.

If taste is involved, it's even worse vibes. I mean, an AI poster for a cell phone repair shop is whatever. An AI poster for a clothing store? I don't trust their fashion. This could be the deciding factor on if I get Filipino or Chinese (especially cause the food on the menu in the article looks terrible)...

dfxm12··on Why I Am Not Going to Buy a Computer
In the context of documentation, it's not about disillusionment. It doesn't matter if you write it, an AI writes it, if there's a searchable wiki, a chat bot front end etc., your colleagues will track you down and ask you about it personally. They don't want documentation. They want to make their problem into your problem.
dfxm12··on How to Read a Painting
How do you do this as a hobby? I mean do you buy paintings you think need restoration from flea markets and restore them for fun? Do you have a collector friend who asks you to help with their collection? Something else?

I've done some art handling (transporting from collectors to galleries). One collector asked me if her painting could be touched up a bit. We didn't provide that kind of service (^_^')
