devwastaken··on NIH suspends pathogen studies over 'gain-of-function' concerns
thats the point. nobody knows how it all works, and by the time you think you do you youve killed people with it.

these attempts to play god always fall prey to the most basic sins. just because someone says they “want to do good” doesnt mean they effecticely can. humans cannot handle the power.

i dont believe in trading lives just so we can fund research grants.

devwastaken··on Retail cyber attacks: NCA arrest four for attacks on M&S, Co-op and Harrods
More like if the store had the information of every customer sitting there for anyone to take. yes, theyre responsible for their negligence.

When you know its going to happen, and then it happens because you did nothing - yeah, its your fault.

devwastaken··on Retail cyber attacks: NCA arrest four for attacks on M&S, Co-op and Harrods
Cyber crime does not exist. Only deficient systems intentionally designed to be exploited exist. if you want your “cyber infrastructure” to not be attacked, dont make it vulnerable. All tech is artificial, not of nature.

Require software to be developed by licensed engineers. no more offshoring. no more importing of cheap labor. make tech corps pay instead of acruing mass wealth. Make the corps pay when the vulnerabilities they put in it are exploited.

devwastaken··on Cops in [Spain] think everyone using a Google Pixel must be a drug dealer
their opinion is from their dept reflected in their meetings and street corner conversations. if there were accountability that officer would not feel safe saying that.
devwastaken··on Bcachefs may be headed out of the kernel
Good. There is no place for unstable developers in a stable kernel.
devwastaken··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
i want a NAS i can puf 4tb nvme’s in and a 12tb hdd running backup every night. with ability to shove a 50gbps sfp card in it so i can truly have a detached storage solution.
devwastaken··on Xfinity using WiFi signals in your house to detect motion
you cant tell most of those things because same ip doesnt coorespond to a unique service and plenty of programs and websites phone to servers where addresses have changed. there is no static database.

you also cant associate it to a person automatically. the burden of proof is high - how many jurors have tech at home they know nothing about and maybe got hacked?

devwastaken··on Earth is trapping much more heat than climate models forecast
no amount of “we can fix this!” will magically change humans out of their animal behaviors. at scale, instinct always beats out higher level thought.

Climate change is a species consuming too many resources and causing their environment to not sustain their population.

Humans will survive, underground with the use of basic climate control tech. the earth will cool again, “humans” come back to the surface.

except, humans decided to create artificial materials that are destructive to reproduction. the genome will be so far removed that humans as we know them now wont exist. the fallout universe is an accurate representation.

devwastaken··on The NO FAKES act has changed, and it's worse
thats also good. online services need to be held responsible for what they host. no where else do they get magic exceptions to well established law.
devwastaken··on Seven replies to the viral Apple reasoning paper and why they fall short
experts are often blinded by their paychecks to see how nonsense their expertise is
devwastaken··on The Right to Repair Is Law in Washington State
This doesnt do anything. Sellers have rights to not have liability for their products as long as you agree. this means they will make you agree to terms before buying the product. terms that will be far more obtuse than what you would have had before.

you have to incentivize the market to build repairable products. the proper solution is the complete removal of software and hardware patents or copyright. our age is control of production, everythings been engineered already.

devwastaken··on Webb telescope helps refine Hubble constant
NASA like all old orgs are extremely inefficient and overwhelmingly waste money. The solution is to create new orgs not hindered by old people that do the least work for the most pay.
devwastaken··on Show HN: I rewrote my Mac Electron app in Rust
You didnt rebuild in Rust. you built a wrapper around a Webview. that webview still uses the same resources as if youd have used webkit directly.

your application is now at the whim of version breaks by the OS browser.

devwastaken··on Open Source Society University – Path to a free self-taught education in CS
unless youre ivy league theres no more connecting. universities are completely irrelevant to tech in modern day. people are talking about their experiences 20 years ago. now, its just expensive adult daycare. remove federal student loans and grants and the market will finally correct.
devwastaken··on CAPTCHAs are over (in ticketing)
you defend at the ID system. anonymous cert chain ID fixes this. the u.s is defined by its fraudulent business and therefore no one in power wants it.
devwastaken··on Realtek's $10 tiny 10GbE NIC will hit motherboards soon
what embedded arm platform could use this?
devwastaken··on A kernel developer plays with Home Assistant
smart homes dont work because wifi doesnt work. almost every user is running low quality hardware or does not deploy a meshing AP to reach the devices. the devices are not resilient to lost packets and high latency

just change a wifi ssid with smart devices in a home and watch it all crumble. users want nothing more than to get rid of “smart” once they realize its not smart enough to figure out how to change wifi networks.

endless “updates”, rent seeking, breaking changes, account setup - its not worth it.

devwastaken··on SSRIs induce cardiac toxicity through dysfunction of mitochondria and sarcomeres
SSRI’s would be illegal if they werent so profitable. modern society creates the environment where humans are removed from nature.
devwastaken··on Proton threatens to quit Switzerland over new surveillance law
Mullvad operates out of Sweden. Unlike proton, mullvad doesnt have to respond to court orders. proton gives up user info thousands a year its right on their transparency page.
devwastaken··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
its been disabled. defender group policy auto re-enabling is readily reproducible. i have a screenshot showing defender detecting the group policy change as a malware detection.

any control you think you have over windows is imaginary.

devwastaken··on I ruined my vacation by reverse engineering WSC
group policy no longer works on win11. updates will reverse it. additionally defender detects turning off realtime monitoring as malware.
devwastaken··on High-school shop students attract skilled-trades job offers
trades are becoming the next walmart job in both pay and quality. you cant have a surplus and expect the system to be sustainable.
devwastaken··on DNS piracy blocking orders: Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS respond differently
which means opendns is a non solution and should not be used.
devwastaken··on Embracer Games Archive is preserving 75000 video games and needs contributions
this will be demolished before 5 years time. physical archives dont work, theyre inefficient and costly. people get bored. the best archive is torrent seeding.
devwastaken··on Former Supreme Court justice David Souter has died
what you see is a reflection of socioeconomics caused by regulatory buyout and political nepotism. “better citizens” and “civic duty” may have been optimal a generation ago and are now a losing strategy. remove the systems that created corps like Rockefeller and you fix this problem.
devwastaken··on Data manipulations alleged in study that paved way for Microsoft's quantum chip
intellectual property is the entire point of modern tech. it doesnt matter if it doesnt work. they want the IP and sit on it. that way if someone else actually does the work they can claim they own it.

repeal IP laws and regulate tech.

devwastaken··on Tech hiring slows, unemployment rises, jobs report shows
tech is now overwhelmingly fraud. its allowed because its a large portion of GDP and a key part of federal politics now. you dont want to work in tech, or in big cities. these things are not sustainable and are failing.
devwastaken··on DRM-Free OnlyFans Downloads See Widevine Project Nuked from GitHub
onlyfans is obviously doing this so people will pirate more. thats all that ever happens with these kinds of virtue takedowns.

DRM is a scam, its made to convince business suits they can magically prevent copying. no one makes money telling them theyre wrong and their business model is to blame.

devwastaken··on Tesla settles with worker who claimed employees told "welcome to the plantation"
fake damage rewards are designed to benefit corps so they can cause public outrage in their favor while in reality paying a small fraction due to payout limitations.
devwastaken··on Milwaukee M18 Battery Reverse Engineering
why cant i use an external DC power supply to replace the one in the chargers? no reason they cant be USB-c given proper supply but there seems to be some kind of special signaling.
