It's things like this that make me want to try using an FPGA dev kit as my next motherboard. Not because the FPGA is relevant to this, but because it demands a lot of the high speed components (CPU cores, RAM controller) that a desktop computer would have.

Mind you, having an FPGA running the show would be the ultimate in extensibility.

I support your plan, and present a proposal for phase two: control and efficiency improvements.

The density of the plasma determines the rate of fusion, and is itself determined partly by temperature. If we were to reflect a significant fraction of the emitted radiation back, then the plasma and its surrounding gas should expand, reducing pressure on the fusing core. That should in turn reduce the rate of fusion, lowering fuel consumption.

In theory, we could even diffuse the entire hydrogen supply into a warm cloud that is not dense enough to fuse at all, and store this until we need more heat. As the system cools, it will contract, eventually reigniting itself.

Even if we fail and die, it will still reignite itself, which clearly demonstrates the inherent safety of my proposal.

"Who: Engineering Ph.D. dropout ..."

In other words, an ordinary professional engineer, who considered extending his formal education? Bit of a gaffe, there.

Wow, looks like the definition got cleaned up a bit over the decades. Back when I was a kid, it was just every computing device the group could get their hands on, networked. Running simple delayed-echo servers, in our case.

It is all as it was foretold. The mighty Beowulf cluster reawakens, summoned by its true calling. Servants of the Dark File, bring forth your abandoned and dying devices, that they may be blessed with an IP in this new Mecca of logic and crystal.

When Neo disconnected, the machines just dumped him for recycling. That is consistent with the machines eliminating humans who develop connection problems (mental disconnect with the Matrix), but it still doesn't account for the humans' bodies being grown and maintained in a nearly functional state.

What really bugged me about their scheme, was the suggestion that a human might make a decent power source. Perhaps that was all misdirection, and the humans are actually the computing substrate of the entire system? Maybe the machines were never able to compute at the power efficiency of a human brain? Maybe they suck at nanotech altogether, and can't even design a decent microchip without human assistance? All their stuff is big and bulky.

(5 minutes later) Lol, I can't believe I guessed it. Thanks to deegles for the background info.

The most desirable, and most physically constrained cities, are mostly coastal. Could something like this work in a place like Vancouver, Seattle, or SF? There is always the threat of bureaucracy or regulations getting in the way, but the incredible pressure of the housing crisis might be enough to encourage open-mindedness on the part of the relevant local leaders.

For the endangered artist community, I could see this working better than it does for someone who works in a specific building. Certainly not a small undertaking, though.

For those who don't like YT links, this is a short professional documentary/interview about a couple who built their home from scratch, on the ocean. Most materials are salvaged, and everything was built by hand. It is beautiful. For a Canadian bureaucrat, the whole thing probably doesn't even compute.

No need to let them run free. Those humans could work remotely, from a small pod of amniotic fluid, mounted to the side of a huge tower. They could live their lives in MMOs, which would seem absolutely realistic, if that was the only thing they ever experienced. I don't think it is realistic to use them as an energy source though, heat would be a waste product in an environment like that.
devrandomguy··on Postgresql multi-master: high availability with automatic disaster recovery
Very cool, I have been keeping an eye on PG's multi-master developments since last summer.

It looks like this implementation prioritizes the Consistency side of CAP, presumably to the detriment of it's ability to handle network partitions. This is a great option to have alongside the classic multi-master data store, which prioritized partitionability and availability, CouchDB and friends. There are applications where going slow, or even failing, is less bad than showing an inconsistent state, and that is where this would shine.

I am curious though, could something like this be used like PouchDB, where each one of millions of clients runs a DB master that has a replica of a subset of the "canonical" state? Is that sort of capability a long-term goal, perhaps by means of a modified SQLite? Or, does this inevitably give any one client the power to DoS other clients just by playing dumb and clumsy with incoming data, when consistency is guaranteed?

For the record, my experience with CouchDB is minimal; I have not scaled CouchDB beyond experiments with a handful of containerized masters.

I should start photoshopping a fake scar onto my face in profile pics, so that I have a chance to be believed when I cry "Doppleganger!" with no scar on my real face.

I think a small lighting bolt on the forehead would look dashing.
