devonnull··on How do you objectively decide whether to repair or to replace an aging device?
Not sure what you mean by "objectively", but I have a few simple criteria that I turn to before I decide to replace a device:

1. Can I easily upgrade it (new hard drive, more memory, change the battery, install another operating system)?

2. Is the cost of repairing/upgrading the device commensurate with the amount of use I'm going to get out of it post repair/upgrade?

3. Do I really need to keep it going or buy a replacement?

devonnull··on Omni helps you use Chrome like a pro
What does "Use Chrome like a pro" actually mean?

devonnull··on Can there be a bigger tragedy than the declining popularity of Eclipse IDE?
>Can there be a worse tragedy than the death of this amazing software?

Too many to mention, both in the past and currently happening.

devonnull··on Ask HN: No-tracking, no BS Newsletter Service
I second Buttondown (https://buttondown.email).
devonnull··on Ask HN: What questions do you ask yourself often/repeatedly?
Why the heck am I doing this?
devonnull··on Ask HN: How do you manage the “Keeping Up with the Joneses” trap?
That's never been a big problem with me. I've never been acquisitive or felt the need to have all of the expensive trappings of my neighbours. It took years, but I figured out what I need and what I don't.

When I do find myself with the urge to keep up with the my neighbours, I stop and ask myself:

1. Do I really need that thing? 2. Will it make me happier or make my life better? 3. What are the longer-term costs (maintenance, depreciation, insurance, etc.)? 4. Is my money better spent elsewhere or just saved?

Trying to keep up with the so-called Joneses is a zero sum game. It won't make you happier. It won't make you a better person. It won't improve your lifestyle. You might just wind up struggling to maintain a life that really isn't yours and isn't for you.

devonnull··on The strangest Nokia phones ever designed
Tip 'o the hat to Nokia for daring to design and release phones like that.
devonnull··on How working unpaid hours became part of the job
> everyone knows that you are hired to put unlimited hours as may be necessary and expected

Good point. However, I've had more than a couple of jobs at which those extra hours became the expectation, not just when necessary.

devonnull··on Just built an AI writer for social media posts – useful?
So you "find it hard and time-consuming to write content for my social media accounts". What are you using your accounts for? And is it that important for you to have a stream of postings? Why not just write and publish short posts occasionally, and not use a spambot?
devonnull··on [dead]
Looks like this managed to get past HN's filters Can someone please flag this? I would, but I don't have enough karma yet to display the Flag link.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Is this legit or is it a sign of something sinister?
Not sure about sinister, but it does sound more than a little dodgy. Like anything else, avoid it if you're unsure.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why should I create QR code of this page?
Maybe some people do. But if you don't use this feature, ignore it. The button being there doesn't affect your use of Chrome, does it? And if it does, it might be time to switch browsers.
devonnull··on Learn Japanese vocabulary while you work (just push play)
Some people have an interest in the country and the culture. For them, knowing Japanese isn't useless. Anyway, not everything you learn or know needs to be practical. Nothing wrong with doing something because you enjoy it, regardless of whether or not there's any professional benefit/use.
devonnull··on Bernie’s Millions
A very sad attempt at a hit piece. It's not as if Sanders is mega rich and hiding his wealth offshore to avoid taxes. And there's no rule that states someone who believes in socialism must live in abject poverty.
devonnull··on Ramen Profitability and the Cheapest Healthy Diet
Nothing new here, but it's always nice to see someone thinking about these things. Not just from the perspective of saving money but also from having a relatively healthy diet for less.
devonnull··on 100 Bytes of CSS
Simple, and great for personal use. Going to have to give this a try.
devonnull··on OneBigTextFile
A new(ish) Reddit group devoted to using one big text file as a productivity tool.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why no one has created a way to apply jobs via API?
Sounds like a solution looking for a problem.
devonnull··on Tilig: A Password Manager for Everyone
You can only log in/sign up using a Google account? Thanks, but no thanks.
devonnull··on Language Transfer
Reminds me of the Michel Thomas method, and not in a good way. Too much narrative in English, and not quite enough of the target language.
