devmach··on Your ATM does not use transactions
I always thought they use transactions but in a different way :

Atm debits an account first using a transaction and after that if something wrong happens atm credits an account with "second" transaction. If second transaction fails, bank can always check the situation and credit later if it's necessary.

Maybe somebody with an experience elaborate how the process works ?

devmach··on Preventing memory leaks in Backbone.js
It's not that hard but instead of thinking what code does, i have to think first what that code mean in javascript.

Writing a tutorial / informative blog post in coffeescript is like : Giving an English lesson in Chinese while teacher and students are native speakers of English.

devmach··on Will Rails be the new PHP?
Please don't compare a framework with a language, even someone before did it.
devmach··on Will Rails be the new PHP?
I really enjoy when arrogant geeks tries to bash language X. They will never learn their language is just a tool and as long as you follow best practices it doesn't matter what language you are using.

And i really don't understand why particularly rails developers looks down to newcomers. If you want to help your community just write tutorials, share your experiences from real life, help to newbies and make other's life easier. If you want to entertain other peopler, well , just write crappy blog posts with such title like " Will X be new Y ? "[1]

[1] : But please read first the article about "Betteridge's Law of Headlines" on Wikipedia.

devmach··on I'm Not Japanese
This drives me crazy all the time.

Even my OS and browser are in English and i made search with "English words" ( eg. "operating system" instead of "Betriebssystem" ), search results are in German because i'm in Germany.

At some level it's acceptable but things get weird when i use my girlfriends notebook ( english OS, chinese browser ) : Now google decides to obey "Accept-Language" and even i sign in with my google account, google switch language to Chinese. Since google tries and fails to being "smart" , i have to switch constantly between English, German and Chinese.

devmach··on Scaling node.js to 100k concurrent connections
It's a shame, that he didn't mentioned about kernel tuning. Without custom settings ( like net.ipv4.tcp_mem ), i think, it's a very difficult to reach this numbers.
devmach··on Play blackjack in Excel
If it's python, if i'm able to use python modules and call functions from excel ( udf ), why IronSpread folks pushes for useless demos ?

Show me some network stuff. Show me how can i write a simple crm ( no not like the one on their blog ) " with " centeral db and gives me ability to work with my coworkers together. Show me how can i gather information from different sources ( web, db v.s. ) and analyse it.

devmach··on Is Nginx obsolete now that we have Amazon CloudFront?
It's only an average use case if you're blogger and use disqus for comments. For most dynamic web applications we need more flexible caching methods and we need to able to change/update cached part on our side.

Don't get me wrong : cloudfront is a cool tech and obviously useful too but a bold claim like " we don't need nginx ( or any performance oriented web server ) because we have cloudfront " is just the very wrong way of thinking.

devmach··on Is Nginx obsolete now that we have Amazon CloudFront?
> Is this just an odd joke? Of course you need a database.

Looks like we need a sarcasm alert on HN, like spoiler alerts :)

devmach··on Is Nginx obsolete now that we have Amazon CloudFront?
Sure it's obsolete, who needs databases and live, chancing data. All we need is a static pages. Besides who needs to build his own infrastructure, it's 2012 right ? Let's buy it.
devmach··on Decentralised social network built on top of email
Seems like there is nothing new under the sun.

devmach··on "The whole Droplr stack runs on HTTPS" ...except content
I never used droplr and now i know i will never use it. Support staff was never able to understand how SSL works or what problem is. Yet he choose simply to ignore it.

>The reason why the content itself is not served under https is precisely to avoid the SSL warning.

That annoying warning is the hearth of the secure connection. It surprises me how people choose an easy way and doesn't care about "doing things right"

devmach··on Show HN: Gridspot, 10x cheaper cloud compute using distributed computing
Thanks. But that's an assumption. He / they should write relevant company informations on gridspot.com.
devmach··on Show HN: Gridspot, 10x cheaper cloud compute using distributed computing
From https://gridspot.com/privacy

> We have designed the Gridspot Software...

Sorry if i missed but : Who are you ? Please put some information about "yourself" somewhere on your site. And if you can, please answer these questions on your page :

- What is your company name and legal type ?

- What is your location ?

- How can i contact to you ? No, support@gridspot.com doesn't count, put some landline numbers too.

- Who are your team members ?

And please don't use " Whois guard" ?

edit: Looks like, downvoting is easier than answering the questions. Seriously, can you explain to me : why do you trust some company which doesn't give any information about itself ?

devmach··on PHP Bug #18556 : Setting locale to 'tr_TR' lowercases class names
You are missing the point that "new" alphabet was way more before designed than "systems".

Right way should be involving in a process of developing standards, not changing some chars because some new tech come and has problems with the language ( going rampage as you mentioned earlier isn't also a valid solution ).

devmach··on Google launches Compute Engine
A Question : Since Google has a bad track record with customer service, how much they have a chance to people trust them ?

They can be "google" and they can be good at infrastructure but i see "image transfer" is problematic here: i want to know that i can "speak" with someone when something went wrong , past experiences shows it's nearly impossible.

(When my account is locked ,i don't want to loose my servers, email, docs, im, storage and thereafter my job...)

devmach··on Show HN: Drapache - serve a dynamic website from your dropbox
Full sentence : "It will not be particularly useful to a developer who is comfortable with git, heroku, ftp, or another method of hosting a website."

But the thing is, drapache is for the programmers [1], if you read full readme you will notice, to use drapache you need to understand basics of programming ( maybe js for static pages and python for dynamic pages).

Now, i understand "It's c00l" but the coolness != useful

[1]Readme/.dbpy : Although far from finished, the dbpy framework is enough for beginning programmers to get started building dynamic websites.

devmach··on Show HN: Drapache - serve a dynamic website from your dropbox
I don't think it's a good idea if you target developers :

1- Trading expensive bandwidth for a cheap storage isn't economically logical.

2- Any web developer should understand how web works and he should be comfortable with ftp, apache/nginx/iis, git(/mercurial), etc...

devmach··on The Used TV Price Is Too Damn High
Irrelevant fun fact : In germany, if you have tv you have to pay yearly ~271$ as a tax ( and it doesn't matter if it's 50000$ super hd 3d or ~30$ old crt )
devmach··on Underscores are stupid
I've got a feeling that HN crowd is lately loosing it's focus by spending it's time on "hipster" topics too much.

Page long commenting on a fluffy article ( e.g "5 * 5 - 3" beats "5*5-3" ) may be good for your mind but imho, this thing should not be on the front page.

devmach··on A Burger, an Order of Fries, and Your Credit Card Number
It depends :

I lost my card and someone found it, went to biggest/main branch of the bank in nuremberg and draw 100€ from cash desk ( this all happened in 3 hours and yes, bank personal doesnt asked/checked identity ). When i found out i lost my card, i called the service line and blocked my card ( though confirmation, my card wasn't blocked ).

After two week rush and paperwork i get my money back ( i know i lost my time but it was never about money ).

There is always some chance to get your money back but the real problem is you're loosing your liquid that's why debit cards has daily/weekly limits.

devmach··on Streak.com (YC S11) Takes On Salesforce With A Simple CRM For Gmail
You're relying two different services to run your business, which can be gone away in a moment.

- If you're not in US, your goverment can shut down Gmail ( for ex. because google is trying to evade tax. )

- Streak can be sold to anycompany which just want to push their services.

Streak should actually be something like Thunderbird extension with RDBMS running in background

devmach··on The all-new Basecamp is live
http://www.quora.com/37signals/Why-doesnt-37signals-own-base...

They didn't own basecamp.com then, now they have.

"Project name is bigger than domains" is a part of lie part of true: Product and it's name important but if you can't get the domain just be arrogant and say to people it doesn't matter. But because you know the importance of the domain name , when you have money and chance get the domain and rule the world.

devmach··on Qualities Your Best Employees Should Have
It's funny, when peoples talks about what they want but don't mention anything about what they ready to give. I think it's easy for "the MBAs".
devmach··on Ramos alarm clock
@paulsammut

i think you're missing one important point : ramos alarm clock doesn't/can't solve the wake-up problem ( people just have to go to the bed early and have a purpose to wake up early ) and just another alarm clock screaming at 6 o'clock in the morning isn't "sexy".

If one would buy it, it would be because the nixie tube and remote control. It looks retro (=good ) but you can remote control it and it wakes you up by the "super hipster nerd" way ! I think you should remove LCD model or if you insist to keep it , give it a modern look ( aluminium case etc ).

devmach··on Best Resume Ever: How to Woo a Startup
Well, it's boring but also it's good resume : she shows her interest and passion.

If someone send me such a resume for " engineering position ", i would probably stop watching after 10 seconds.

devmach··on China Builds 30-Story Hotel In Just 15 Days
So what about security ? As i can see (from the video), they didn't covered the steel structure with any fireproofing material ?
devmach··on The $40 Standup Desk
Yes, they are mostly plastered brick.

By the way : concrete isn't bad as you think. There are different type of concrete.But... While it's strong and resistant to fire, if you live in somewhere where the earth quakes are common, concrete is a bad choice. Also metal frames in the concrete is problematic, they have to be resistant to the water (galvanized etc.) or in time they will rust and tear apart the concrete.

devmach··on The $40 Standup Desk
Quick tip : After drilling a wall you can clean the dust with vacuum cleaner and fill the hole ( not fully ) with quick drying plaster/cement and stick wall plug[1] in it. With this way you can be able to mount your stuff on almost every wall and the mounting will be stronger. It is useful if you live in a old apartment ( like most of the appartments in Germany... )

devmach··on Google+ Is Going To Mess Up The Internet
Some mistakes that i remember :

* Buzz

* Code Search

* University resarch program for google search.

* Jaiku

* Dodgeball

That services either acquired or created by Google. They were valuable but now closed . For example : Buzz has fascinating technology behing it, but still failed. Google didn't understand users ( there was not so much people because of the invitation thing and mass was important ), user wasn't able to understand "What the heck is the Google Buzz" ( communication error by google ? ).

As for G+, Eric Schmidt's response wasn't the nicest response to give the users who complains about real name policy. And again "elite g+ club" enthusiasm was a mistake, like buzz, because a social network means nothing without your friends ( this time they realised their mistake and act before it's too late ).
