deviantfero··on The Unix Operating System (1982) [video]
Kernighan is good at explaining things, so I'm guessing he wanted to make it as simple as posible, some of those just don't roll of your tongue as well as the aliased versions
deviantfero··on Hideo Kojima’s Video-Game Worlds
the first two metal gears are available in English in the HD collection version of MGS3 (PS3, XBox360 or PS Vita).

The first metal gear available on the NES has not much to do with the real first metal gear game, Hideo Kojima was not really involved in that adaptation for the NES, so it isn't considered canon or anything.

If I had to pick a platform for the full experience, that'd be the PS3 and the Legacy Collection bundle, which also includes MGS4 (physical BDD) and MGS1 as a digital download, I'm not sure if it's still available, but when it was, it was a great bundle.

deviantfero··on What I wish I knew about React
I've worked with both extensively, hooks are way easier to grasp, they allow you to avoid numerous ifs and comparing manually to previous states, you can separate actions according to what properties you're listening changes on, which would be cobbled together in a traditional life-cycle method, and the best part? They can be reused between components
deviantfero··on I built a website to occupy people during quarantine that updates midnight UTC
El Salvador, it is not exactly illegal, you get thrown into a quarantine center for 30 days if you're not outside for anything but essential needs or your job (if you are an essential worker), I do think it's for the best for now, most people would simply not understand how bad it could get otherwise, our country does not have the resources to handle this disease if it gets out of hand, it is a slippery slope though

https://covid19.gob.sv

The government has put up a site where they update stats daily, it's in Spanish though

deviantfero··on Bootstrap, a UI framework used by 20% of internet sites, is dropping IE support
You don’t have to update bootstrap if you want to keep supporting IE, I don’t see anything wrong with that, you might just miss some conveniences, so I don’t think it will affect them that much, need IE? use bootstrap 4
deviantfero··on Covid-19 twice as contagious as previously thought – CDC study
even if the death rate is that low, you have to account for the fact that health systems in first world countries are overloading with the initial stages of the spread, leading to more people dying because there's no medical attention to patients who would otherwise make it through the disease.
deviantfero··on Darling – Run macOS software on Linux
Does it have pen pressure support already? Last time I checked pen pressure only worked on CS2 and below on wine
deviantfero··on Ask HN: What happens next after a successful lockdown?
It is close to happening in El Salvador
deviantfero··on Thinking in React Hooks
Class components are not going anywhere, so if hooks don’t fit your use case, choose the better tool to do it
deviantfero··on Thinking in React Hooks
I've just used hooks for the first time, I'd been working with react for three years before this, but let me tell you, using graphql/apollo with hooks is such a simple thing, I can't go back to using class components, it's so much simpler like this, loadables are a great concept.
deviantfero··on John Carmack: I’m going to work on artificial general intelligence
This reads like a horror story prompt of some kind, eerie!
deviantfero··on Pure Bash Bible
Great read dylan!
deviantfero··on Running GitHub on Rails 6.0
I'm currently working with it for a project atm, I can not recommend it, it's ORM is pretty bad, cutting corners wherever possible, but the worst thing about it is its documentation it is badly redacted and relies a lot on examples rather than laying out the possibilities of what you can do with a certain part of sails, issues also go unattended for a long while and there's not much of a community surrounding it.

Just my two cents, I would be happy to hear some success stories from it though.

deviantfero··on Using TypeScript with React
How do you suggest someone should proceed if an essential library in their project has no typing for typescript?
deviantfero··on Give Firefox a chance
I need a websocket inspector, what do you suggest?
deviantfero··on Give Firefox a chance
I did, but I get beach balls of death now and then, I also need a websocket frame inspector
deviantfero··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
I'm always doing web development with webrtc, having two browsers open simultanously? Not an option
deviantfero··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
The only reason I don't switch is that whenever Firefox has control of the webcam, I can't seem to be able to access the webcam with any other software, is this configurable? I work with webRTC a lot, so this is essential for me, I really want to switch
deviantfero··on Linux apps that run anywhere
Yeah I agree that it is a pain when a package is not in the official repos and maybe I should see this a centralized solution to that, currently I think each distro tries to solve it somewhat, for example Arch and it's AUR
deviantfero··on Linux apps that run anywhere
How is this different from windows? I think this is good for dependency heavy apps, such as krita, but you should still try to keep things as centralized as possible, makes updates easier and painless
deviantfero··on Antergos Linux Project Ends
You also have anarchy linux, but it is not actively mantained, still manjaro and antergos were different concepts
deviantfero··on Dbeaver – Multi-platform database tool
This is a great tool and it makes my life so much easier, so much better than pgadmin4

deviantfero··on Show HN: WebRTTY – Share a terminal session over WebRTC
Hi there, I authored this small chat-text/file-transfer demo without any third party libraries for WebRTC communication [0].

It is very easy to get running in your computer since it's made with the purpose of explaining data flow withing WebRTC, logs have been implemented describing this flow in both client and server, you can find a blog post about it here [1].

deviantfero··on Slack refunds customers 100x amount paid during outage
I worked at a US cellular company costumer service call-center once, we had 'unlimited' credits to give out to people, but we were incetivized to give none whenever is possible, that's why it seems like negotiating, because giving credit affects an employees metrics.

It also depends greatly on the mood of the one answering your call and your issue, if they're about to quit, big chances you get a nice credit for your complaint, it's kinda seen as a "just shut up" trump card.

deviantfero··on Wine 2.0 released
I have photoshop CS6 working perfectly fine, just look around for a custom installer that doesn`t connect to the internet, you should find it in any pirate site
deviantfero··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
I made: http://github.com/deviantfero/wpgtk

An easy to use wallpaper/config manager and themer for GNU/Linux which takes it's colorscheme from the wallpaper and applies it to things like the terminal, tint2, openbox, GTK2/3 and optional config files too, so the color scheme affects all the config files specified. It's compatible with everything that uses written config files and hex colors!
