I disagree. Not wanting to learn hex does not make you less of a techie. One can only focus on so much, and tech is huge.
devdad··on Survivorship Bias
Some students would have to start at 600 meters with led shoes and weights in their hands. And another group should get to start at 200 meters on bikes.

devdad··on Ask HN: How do I start my own consulting firm?
I've been doing digital consultancy for about a year now in my own firm. Me and my co-founder started with a client from connections we made when we were salaried consultants, and took it from there.

Here's what I've learned since I started that I haven't seen others mention.

- Paid networks are great. We pay about 2-4k USD / year for gold memberships. The companies there only send their executive branches or other people with deciding power, so you'll meet relevant business contacts from the start. We've gotten business worth ~35k from these in two months, so 31k+ with ten months to go of the year for a 4k investment.

- Being able to speak in front audiences will give you leads. We generally just speak about digital stuff to our paid networks.

- The more people see you as a friend, the more likely you are to get big referrals. I go running with the CEO of large company in our field and we've become friends. About 200k coming from his referrals this year.

devdad··on What happened when Swedes tried six-hour days?
This is a good interpretation of the term. Sorry for not explaining the concept of fika :)

My company is a bit weird in the Swedish work culture since we don't really go for breaks at 9.00 am and 3 pm. But we get to go home at 3-4 pm because of it.

I realize that this is privileged and that the fika fills an important need for a break during more physical or mentally demanding work.

devdad··on What happened when Swedes tried six-hour days?
I'm actually a Swedish business owner (me and co-owner) doing 30 hour weeks. One of our main goals of starting our digital consultancy was to work less but receive same or better pay. It works well for us. We're at least as productive as we were as employees.

The main difference being we cut out "fika" - this was easily 60 minutes per day at our old work place - and dropped all private web lurking from the work days. We just decided we didn't need all that downtime from doing work during days, we'd rather spend it at home.

Clients are pleased with the work, I get to both drop and pickup up my kids everyday. In Sweden, if you've got web dev skills, this is very doable.

I believe in it on a bigger scale for worker happiness sake and really hope we'll get there soon.

devdad··on Announcing Ionic 2 Final
Way to much hate here. I run an app with ~30k users and I never get any complaints about lag or comments on the stores that reflect negative on the performance. All criticism I've received has been by my own missteps.

Ionic 2 has given me two platforms and a great development experience. The few times I've had problems they have an amazing responsive team on Slack that's helped me out right away.

devdad··on Next wave web development: Elixir+Phoenix vs. Meteor+Angular2+TypeScript
Angular 2 with TS for front-end is an OK choice and works well for us. Choose another backend though, Meteor has seen it's prime. Chances are that a good old Express server will be more than enough.
devdad··on Show HN: Boilerplate for Node.js and TypeScript with Jest tests
My company is almost exclusively using Node for our backends.
devdad··on Ask HN: Are we overcomplicating software development?
Hi, I'm happy to be posting anon right now. Can someone ELI5 the difference between libraries and packages and a microservice?
devdad··on Runners’ brains may be more connected, research shows
So you're sub40ish at 10k and lands at 60ish at 15k. If true, that's impressive.
devdad··on How to start a company with no free time
I was home three days a week with our youngest while starting a consultancy, and I got pretty much all my coding done with him sleeping on my chest, me crouched over him in the couch typing away on my MBP :)

Clients had no idea how delicately I was hitting the keys when writing their code. Deadlines could be missed if he didn't sleep as expected.

As soon as he woke up it was back to being a full time dad. I like to believe that I'm way more productive now since I've become a father - being a parent that's also part of the workforce requires both discipline and creativity.
