devcpp··on India’s lost 220 languages in past 50 years
But why? All that does is handicap the people who don't speak more than 2 dialects, even though they may be more productive in terms of work than the people who speak 22 dialects.

At age 21, I have already immigrated twice to countries with different languages, and I have always considered language as the major barrier in everything I always did (because past a certain age, no matter how hard I try, I keep the accent).

I dream of a world where language is a concern of the past. It just makes no sense to keep this hindrance around when there are important things to do.

devcpp··on Artificial Intelligence and What Computers Still Don't Understand
But the reward is so great that we can't dismiss the possibility of finding the special wings that are appropriate for that priceless plane.

Think about it: we dont' just get very cheap labor working 24/7 without moral issues or personal needs. We can also make the robots take our jobs very efficiently, and technological progress will be unstoppable (particularly if they can improve themselves). It's the essence of singularity.

devcpp··on Show HN: Virtual Machines in the Browser
Plus Arc is just one syllable and sounds good. That makes it really tempting.
devcpp··on Math Advances Suggest RSA Encryption Could Fall Within 5 Years
To take it further, I suppose they want to protect US citizens, companies and government from crypto attacks while using US laws to snoop on them easily. That way, they prevent foreign threats by making it very hard for everyone to break any system in the US. And on the other hand, they can still read everything by issuing subpoenas to any company and ISP they feel like (with borderline constitutional legality in some cases).
devcpp··on Android AOSP maintainer quits
I was saying that with enough pressure, they wouldn't just allow redistribution or even publish the source code, they would even release it under the GPL and kiss the buyers' feet if asked to.
devcpp··on Hacker News Web App for Mobile
Any plans to release the source code?
devcpp··on Hacker News Web App for Mobile
HN for Android is FOSS and it's awesome.

As for iOS, it doesn't matter whether you get the source code because you have no way to make sure that what you see is what you get (from the App store).

devcpp··on Ubuntu Edge price dropped to $695
You should have read the submission. They say that the price is now fixed until the end of the campaign and anyone who paid more than $695 will get a refund of the difference. So, if anything, this alleviates any uncertainties about the price and no one should feel hurt.
devcpp··on Android AOSP maintainer quits
You can't blame capitalism for that. In a free market, consumers can just stop buying Qualcomm products for a month, and I can guarantee you that a choking Qualcomm would release all they have as FOSS as fast as they could.

But most of the population is uneducated in that regard. Blame the lack of enthusiasm for FOSS.

devcpp··on We're about to hit phase 3 of ARIN IPV4 rationing
And normal people and smaller companies need their addresses even more.
devcpp··on We're about to hit phase 3 of ARIN IPV4 rationing
Awesome, that will push IPv6 adoption.

And big companies that need this sort of routing for millions of addresses can surely afford paying for these addresses anyway.

devcpp··on Tor use is now forbidden on Kimsufi's OVH
Weird, the French part looks like the output of a translator. There are a few faults of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure.

Your translation is correct though.

devcpp··on “NASDAQ is owned.” Five men charged in largest financial hack ever
The IDF's ICT unit also has a very large budget (it's actually the only unit with an increasing budget despite a 2 billion overall budget drop), and with access to all kinds of technologies that only a government can afford. When the engineers get out of there, they know things that few people know about.
devcpp··on Bill Gates’ nuclear company explores molten salt reactors, thorium
I dislike Nathan Myhrvold as a whole, and that's what I think that guy meant too: with the information we have, we can only hate Myhrvold.

And I, for one, do not excuse Bill Gates for all the bad he's done to the world of software, among others, just because of his charity. But that's my personal opinion.

devcpp··on Block NSA funding for collecting the call records of all Americans
Exactly. The NSA can't use their funds however they feel like. They have to account to several governmental entities for their (secret) precise funding, and I doubt they would lie about it and take their resources from their useful tasks in order to reallocate them to spying on non-suspect citizens.
devcpp··on Ads in Gmail displayed as normal emails?
Me too! I'll soon be buying a small home server and I am still wondering how to begin building my setup, since I've never used anything else than FTP hosting.
devcpp··on Ads in Gmail displayed as normal emails?
Google had been around for over 10 years when it started doing bad things with its services too.
devcpp··on Microsoft Is Getting Rich on Android
Thanks. I'll spare you from the obligatory rant on how obvious most of these patents are.
devcpp··on White Coke
>If that problem arises, we can deal with it.

This problem has arised in nearly all the sites that I know that have ever tolerated it. Eventually, someone learns that it's allowed and exploits that. Actually, you're that person because that link sounded to me like a sales pitch, but I can't prove that this was your intention.

In all cases, I'd rather prevent it from happening by disapproving it than "dealing with it" after the deed is done.

>To the actual end user, it makes no difference at all.

Bullshiiiiit. It makes the difference that this shit gets spammed all over the Internet eventually. Boo.

(as a side note, you can't prove they'd have gone to Bezos rather than contribute to an Amazon commission decrease if no one used these referrals)

devcpp··on Snowden applies for asylum in Russia
It's not a PR coup, they want to discourage possible whistleblowers by telling them: "if you reveal big stuff about us, we'll hunt you anywhere you go and eventually we'll find you and you'll pay".
devcpp··on Choosing an OSS license
You know what's more important to me than to do whatever I wish to with your code? Doing whatever I wish to do the code of every single person using your code.

Of course, the chain can't end with me and I'll have to publish my own changes. But it's worth it, I'm not a proprietary software asshole, and in the end I'll benefit from other people's changes and insert it back in my own code and improve my sales that way. You, me, the other programmers, Stallman, the users, everybody wins!

That's how I see it anyway. In the end, you have your own priorities and if you like to give without always receiving, that's understandable too. Ah, tradeoffs...

devcpp··on Microsoft reorganizes
That's still extremely vague. Much more than Google's.
devcpp··on Nokia Lumia 1020 packs 41-megapixel camera whopper
So none of you guys cares about openness, uh? Too bad, if more people, we wouldn't have the problem of closed platforms to begin with.
devcpp··on Prism Break
It doesn't matter. Google can read your emails on the other end of the pipe, and the NSA can fetch the plaintext from them.
devcpp··on Prism Break
Now it is.
devcpp··on Prism Break
Have you even seen the slides leaked by Snowden? They tracking everyone. Of course no one has a problem about using FISA requests. The very problem that started this is that they disregard the constitution and track people regardless of their history.

You must have been living in a cave...

devcpp··on Prism Break
Surely we can trust this guy. He knows so much more than us, he must be working at Microsoft or something!
devcpp··on Prism Break
You are wrong, they specifically say that this is a privacy measure to anyone who whines that they want a "superbar" like Chrome's.

Using Google is a privacy risk but at least you can control it with Firefox, when typing URLs that need privacy. Who the hell can verify what Google (and the NSA listening to their pipes) does with your visited URLs? If you use another search engine, Google can see that, and it's one more piece of information.

devcpp··on Video shows plane's moment of impact at SFO
I think it depends on the tone of the Allahu Akbar. There's is a "this is breathtaking" tone (much like Oh my God) and a "Fellows, let's praise God" tone. I would say that chanting or shouting that phrase corresponds to the latter case.
devcpp··on Google Correlate - Draw
Agreed, this is exactly why I said "predictable". The dilution of techies among the more casual crowd on the Internet was supposed to happen (or we'd be out of jobs), but I wish they had been taught some important concepts of software before learning how to use a browser.
