detroitcoder··on US State Dept Issues Worldwide Travel Alert
I make this type of argument pretty often and it is more to counteract the psychological impact of terrorism than anything else. We should feel that our safety is in jeopardy only relative to the likelihood of a given threat. Any more so only empowers the the people who are threatening us.

Out of curiosity how often do you tweak the time decay of a given post? Also do some posts have different time decays based on the content (eg. Who's Hiring? vs YC job post vs standard post)?

I feel that profitable Division 1 athletic teams should pay their athletes the same as top tier internship contracts (GOOG, MSFT, FB, etc). Why is one student allowed to profit from talent and hard work while another is explicitly forbidden to do so?

detroitcoder··on Use Python in Excel without add-ins
This has been available for over a decade with the win32com client using COM. You can easily register python classes so that you can call them from Excel and easily call Excel from Python. There is nothing new in this video. I put a simple tutorial on how to do some of this last year. http://detroitcoder.me/2013/11/26/video-create-python-object...

It sounds cool doesn't it? I haven't thought about it before this thread but it sounds pretty easy to put together.
detroitcoder··on Remote Year: Travel with interesting people while working remotely
What are your thoughts on this? - Remote Working Groups (3 - 10 people) - New city every month - Rent entire home via AirBNB - Keep per person avg monthly rent below 1000 USD
detroitcoder··on Remote Year: Travel with interesting people while working remotely
I have started to experiment with this over the last month. Staying at room shares on airbnb, working in coffee shops/co-working spaces during the day and then meetups at night to network. Doing this with a group would lower costs and keep a sense of familiarity. Do you think a less formal concept of this would work?

detroitcoder··on Why Reddit moderators are “censoring” Glenn Greenwald’s latest
After reading the article, my gut reaction was 'Oh this is an interesting article, I wonder what the HN comments have to say about it?'

Then I see the top comments and they all try to discredit Greenwald as a sensationalist trying to grab publicity at the expense of honest reddit moderators. I then mentally put less validity on the article and move on to the next link. However I can't help but question if somehow my reaction was engineered by someone else. Just a thought.

detroitcoder··on Django vs. Flask for a long-term project
When I am teaching someone programming from scratch with Python, I usually get to Flask by day 3/4. Other than having to use decorators that look confusing at first, it is very intuitive and a quick win for newcomers looking for results.
