detectivestory··on Show HN: An all-in-one image crop/split/collage tool (no uploads, no watermark)
Great job! A useful resource, and it works surprisingly well on mobile. I think you should try improve the SEO quite a bit because it looks better than most of what you'll find in a search engine at the moment.
detectivestory··on Show HN: Workzonespeedingticket.com – Automating disputes for automated fines
I wish there was a directory of some sort for these "specialized LLM tools". But I guess the "circle of ai" means that these custom prompts and such will eventually just be regurgitated by the models themselves, so it might get dated pretty quickly.
detectivestory··on Show HN: Learn New Vocabulary Contextually through Daily Images
Just a simple app I created to to help myself with learning vocabulary contextually, and to give myself an opportunity to get instant feedback on mistakes I make in my target language.

The idea is simple: Describe an image in your target language. To help you, there are clues mapped to the image. You can interact with those clues to get example sentences, or listen to the words. Once you describe the image, you can get some (LLM) feedback. I know this is not for everyone but I personally find it super helpful. And it will also generate some smart flashcards (if you are logged in) based on any mistakes you make.

Hope you enjoy, and thanks for reading!

Wasn't there a joke about this happening in some movie when an English soccer team manager wrote the team name on the back of a box of cigarettes. Later he had to include the inclusion of two unknown players in the selection: The players names were Benson, and Hedges.
detectivestory··on Take One Small Step
I've found this to be the case with language learning. Its actually an enjoyable thing to do once you "get into the groove". Apps like duolingo are pretty easy for daily routines but the learning can be quite passive. I now force myself to write one sentence each day on Snapalabra, and that often leads to a highly rewarding 30 minute session.
detectivestory··on Show HN: Veenew – A social chat app built around tiny, focused conversations
I get the impression that there is a very good idea here but you are not selling it very well. I think a text-heavy explanation is better here than on the webpage itself.

People on this site don't tend to have much patience when being shown something new. It would be great if you could dive right in as a guest user somehow. The CTAs on the webpage are not very inviting also imo. Not many people are going to want to sign up just to try something novel.

detectivestory··on Show HN: Snapalabra – A daily exercise for learning new vocabulary
at the moment you need to log in but I will release an update soon to remove that barrier. English <---> Spanish is supported along with a few more.
detectivestory··on Show HN: An automated tutor to help you understand chess
Really like this. I had considered making something similar but I wasn't sure on the best approach. I think it might be nice to add an option for the user to toggle how detailed each response is. I think for a lot of moves, you just want concise, simple feedback. But for other moves, especially mistakes, it is nice to press for more details.

Edit: What I had in mind was to actually develop something that would analyse all of my games and pinpoint some common mistakes that I always make (with the main focus on recent games). I feel that could be a really helpful tool to have.

I really like this idea.. but could this not be done for free using ollama and prepare-commit-msg? Seems like you could get a "good enough" solution together pretty easily without any cost.

Working on a visual language learning app called Snapalabra!

The idea is simple: You look at an image and describe what you see in your target language. That's basically it!

My reason for building it was that even though I can understand a lot of spoken spanish, I really struggle to construct sentences on the fly when speaking. Doing a few minutes of active learning like this each day really helps remap my brain a little, and I quickly run into situations where I hit a wall and realize I actually don't understand something as well as i had thought.

The app also gives a little feedback on what i have written from an llm, and it also provides clues that I have mapped to each image.

At the moment I am using it mainly for intermediate Spanish and beginner Irish, and personally I find it really helpful for both. Basically learning vocan for Irish, and more serious sentence structure etc. in Spanish.

I know a lot of people absolutely hate the idea of mixing LLMs with language learning, and I can kind of see why, but I personally find it really helpful in certain cases. If you are already doing classes, and consuming content in your target language I think something like this will be really helpful for a 5 minute coffee-break type activity in the morning. Its not a language course and I have not intention for it to be one. Its just a supplementary little tool that helps with getting your brain thinking in a new language and it is free to use.

detectivestory··on Show HN: I built an app to repurpose YouTube videos for my content funnel
You say things like Nebly creators save 5+ hours per week on average but you don't provide anything to back up that claim.. little things like that. I think most people would be more convinced by just seeing it in action rather than you trying to convince them, or give them reasons for wanting to use it with unconvincing promotional text.
detectivestory··on Show HN: I built an app to repurpose YouTube videos for my content funnel
This looks like it could be a great tool if it works well but the website maybe feels a little "scammy". I'm pretty sure even the guy's photo is AI... The image name is "efdfff99a_ChatGPTImageDec10202507_44_08PM"
detectivestory··on Show HN: Mapibara – A Map for Local Events (markets, concerts, hiking...)
This is great. UI could maybe do with a little work (better icons etc) but I've found it to be somewhat informative. Where is the data coming from?
detectivestory··on Show HN: Can you guess the name of a person who doesn't exist?
The suggestions cover the next button even after one has been selected. It makes the UI pretty tricky to use on mobile. Otherwise its fun
detectivestory··on Show HN: TinyCompressor – Free, Privacy-First Image/Video/PDF Compression Tool
Having to select an image compressor based on format seems like a redundant step.. Can the service not just automatically recognise the file format?

Can you explain more about how the image gets compressed on the client side?

Edit: I just tried it with a small png image (49kb), the site told me that it had compressed it down to 28.75kb. I downloaded the compressed version and it is 49kb..

I like this. It would be really cool if you included a generated code snippet, or an embeddable iframe, so that it could be added to a webpage.

FYI: The z-index on the background dropdown seems to be too low. It doesn't appear correctly on Brave browser

detectivestory··on Show HN: spymux – Spy on your tmux panes
I could have sworn this feature came by default but I guess not. On a side-note, does anyone know of any curated list of tmux plugins similar to vimawesome?
detectivestory··on The lazy Git UI you didn't know you need
My current setup is just a few alias commands and I use gitin instead of "git log". I really wish that tool was still in development because it provides a really nice minimalist design for exploring git repos: https://github.com/isacikgoz/gitin
detectivestory··on The English language doesn't exist – it's just French that's badly pronounced
Yes, it is a Germanic language. The title is a tongue-in-cheek jibe about how much the English language has borrowed from French and Latin. I believe the majority of English words come from Latin/French although the top 100 most spoken words are generally Germanic. People seem to forget that England was ruled by French speaking people for a long time, and that had a huge impact on the development of the English we speak today.
detectivestory··on The English language doesn't exist – it's just French that's badly pronounced
I am equally surprised and enertained by how offended some people are regarding this article.

FYI: The above sentence contains 7 words that come from old french/latin, and 7 that come from old english/german
