deskamess··on Warranty Void If Regenerated
I had no idea it was AI assisted (as another comment put it). However I am fine with this... I would certainly enhance my long form content like the author described. The author mentioned the use of world bible and style guides, and it shows through in the consistency and tightness of the article. And that is key... to take something AI generated (based on a prompt) and rework it systematically in an iterative human-in-the loop. The end result was a great read.
deskamess··on Wide logging: Stripe's canonical log line pattern
Are there any restrictions on how short the error_slug should be? The meat of some of my errors can be pretty long (for example an ffmpeg error). There are also many phases to a job - call them tasks. Can a canonical log line be a collection of task log lines?

deskamess··on The $100B megadeal between OpenAI and Nvidia is on ice
Do they have a good multilingual embedding model? Ideally, with a decent context size like 16/32K. I think Qwen has one at 32K. Even the Gemma contexts are pretty small (8K).
deskamess··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
It is still prescribed for epilepsy. I am actually hoping for some medication stories if anyone/someone they know has ADHD and epilepsy. It's for a juvenile, but your stories can be for any age. Or pointers to any resources about the combo.

This makes 50 cookies. I think they are too small (tsp scoop on baking sheet). That's the only mod I would make.

I think there is a book (Chip War) about how the USSR did not effectively participate in staying at the edge of the semiconductor revolution. And they have suffered for it.

China has decided they are going to participate in the LLM/AGI/etc revolution at any cost. So it is a sunk cost, and the models are just an end product and any revenue is validation and great, but not essential. The cheaper price points keep their models used and relevant. It challenges the other (US, EU) models to innovate and keep ahead to justify their higher valuations (both monthly plan, and investor). Once those advances are made, it can be bought back to their own models. In effect, the currently leading models are running from a second place candidate who never gets tired and eventually does what they do at a lower price point.

How do you read youtube videos? Very curious as I have been wanting to watch PDF's scroll by slowly on a large TV. I am interested in the workflow of getting a pdf/document into a scrolling video format. These days NotebookLM may be an option but I am curious if there is something custom. If I can get it into video form (mp4) then I can even deliver it via plex.
deskamess··on Gemini 3 Flash: Frontier intelligence built for speed
Monopolies and wanna-be monopolies on the AI-train are running for their lives. They have to innovate to be the last one standing (or second last) - in their mind.
deskamess··on LLM from scratch, part 28 – training a base model from scratch on an RTX 3090
I have an old 2060 with 6GB (I think). I also have a work laptop 3060 with 6GB (shared to 8GB). What can I do with those? I dabble a bit here and there but I would like to run my own local LLM for 'fun'.

Thanks!

Yep... cant wait for them 'unwrap' the reason.

Bad timing for North America Eastern TZ - day break here. Pacific/Mountain TZ should be fine.
deskamess··on Why JPEG XL ignoring bit depth is genius (and why AVIF can't pull it off)
How far away is JPEG-XL rust version from Google if Chrome is not interested in it?
deskamess··on 10k pushups and other silly exercise quests that changed my life
Ah... so I always though pushups were for my chest, but my triceps always got a workout. So I thought I was doing something wrong. I have shoulder issues so the tricep pushup is probably better for me.

Looks to be US only? Any plans to expand to Canada? If not, are there paid options where I can visit the US to utilize this service (perhaps pick a border state like NY or Vermont)?
deskamess··on Helium Browser
I use FF... but they are financially tied to Google and even technically they are waiting on Google to implement JPEG-XL instead of moving forward themselves. Why not do some work/spend some money to borrow Safari's implementation or audit and augment a third party library? Instead of waiting on Google... esp on this matter where you could be waiting for a long time.
deskamess··on Is This Bad? This Feels Bad. (Fortra GoAnywhere CVE-2025-10035)
So would the signed 'object' contain code? Or is it just data? And even if it is code, does deserializing mean execution? I guess it could mean execution at some other stage in the process.

What is the end-goal of this... would it be data exfiltration vs ransomware.

deskamess··on M5 MacBook Pro No Longer Coming in 2025
Where do you source your used M1 from?
deskamess··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
Is possible to equip an old car with some sort of infotainment+map system (ideally integrated with GMaps)? Something off the shelf that requires installation but after that integrates with your phone (Android or in the future Apple).
deskamess··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
I was in a situation where I had to guess. It would be nice if there was a hint (after a successful guess) on why that box was 'ready for solve'. i.e., what other reveals can lead to this box being ready for a Innocent/Guilty choice.

I did enjoy the game though. Re-reading the clues is helpful - reinitialize your context window!

deskamess··on Oracle engineers caused five days software outage at U.S. hospitals
Curious if that is from recent experience? I used Oracle decades ago but these days it's all SQL Server.
deskamess··on Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers
The narrative has been that the 'other countries' pay for the tariff. Not the US consumer. So this may be an issue and not one that you can walk away from easily when the customer sees that it is added to their bill.
deskamess··on Assignment 5: Cars and Key Fobs
I think the Toyota has it too. Press and hold lock and click unlock twice on the FOB. This disables the signalling that enables a lot of 'quick actions' - like double tapping the door latch to open it.
deskamess··on The Last Stand of the Corporate Peacock
Spot on. Go to work, jump on that Teams/Zoom meeting. And go out to lunch, so the local businesses don't fail. That includes not just restaurants, but parking lots as well (the public transport here is broken and getting worse). Somehow, 'green thinking' which was popular pre-COVID is no longer talked out - everyone should drive and come to the downtown office and support local business. How about suburb businesses? How about those business that cannot survive in a model are allowed to die a new business model (perhaps not food) pops up?
deskamess··on The Last Stand of the Corporate Peacock
And your commute and the weather. My coworkers are nice, but I would not trade WFH for drive + coworker company.

And there are people who insist others come back since they themselves are extroverts, and they need someone to talk to (not my company, but family).

deskamess··on TypeScript is Like C# – A Backend Guide
Is it available as a backend language in an ASP .NET Core app? It would be nice if there was a VS project template that was Typescript end-to-end.
deskamess··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
Correct me if I am wrong... she was actually in the US to apply for a new visa with a new company and not on business with the old company.
deskamess··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
Very likely, that as a Canadian, you can enter the US without a visa as long as you do not work. You need a TN visa+status to work. So probably entered US on passport (no visa status) and then applied for TN... during which things went poorly.
deskamess··on Freelancing: How I found clients, part 1
That seems like a solid recruiter. Could you provide a link to their website?
deskamess··on Fly To Podman: a script that will help you to migrate from Docker
What's the podman UX/story on Windows if anyone is using it? Say for Server 2022 (prod) and Win 11 Pro (dev).

Does one prefer using WSL2 or Hyper-V as the machine provider? From what I understand, podman provides the container engine natively so nothing additional is required. Do container runtimes like containerd only come into play when using kubernetes? Not a windows specific question, but is there a reason to pick a podman native container vs one in a k8s context. I understand podman supports k8s as well. Other info: No current containers (docker or k8s) are in play.

Thanks in advance.
