What's the evidence that it's spot on?
derrickdirge··on Annoyances of API Design
I couldn't agree more wrt the virtues of descriptive names. An enormous set of code comments is made redundant by the use of more descriptive names. Modern tools make it trivially easy to reproduce names of arbitrary length.

I can't see the downside, yet the author of the article acts like it should be obvious.

Well, they fell out of scope.

Smelliness generally increases proportional to length, simply by virtue of the fact that it takes longer for my human brain to parse. A one line function has no inherent smell because usually I can tell immediately if there's anything else smelly about it. A 250 line function smells a bit more since there are more places for more insidious smells to hide. Very short methods tend to be very easy to reason about.

What properties of 100-250-line methods make them optimal?

derrickdirge··on Apple Eyeing Time Warner Acquisition
It's really difficult for me to imagine Apple providing a worse customer experience in this sector than Time Warner currently does.

For me, aiming for the shortest possible methods and classes forces me to more carefully consider good design principles like Single Responsibility. I don't automatically assume that long methods are wrong, but they certainly smell.

It's pretty gross the way you've made this memorial thread all about you. This seems like the exact wrong place to air your personal grievances against HN.

This is an excellent example of how not to respond to being downvoted.

Take a step back and a nice deep breath and consider why you might have been downvoted. It may have more to do with the tone of your delivery than the actual content of your message.

Lashing out at those who disagree with you with baseless accusations is counterproductive.

It would be great if I could get it to write the specs and docs as well.

derrickdirge··on Earth Might Have Hairy Dark Matter
If I was in the market to downvote someone, that last line would've sold me.

Can we please try to keep our delicate egos out of the discussion? If I wanted to see people gripe bitterly about their comments being downvoted, I'd go to reddit.

An unhandled race condition disfigured and killed human beings. That earns it a spot at the top of the list IMO.

'Discover Weekly' is the one feature keeping me with Spotify. Their UI annoys me on a daily basis, but I've got a lot of great recommendations from them. Frankly, I wish Apple would mirror this feature, though it goes against their whole 'human curated playlists' philosophy.

But violence just makes it easier for the other side to vilify your side and completely disregard your original point.

The story becomes 'people who think x are violent terrorists' and all of a sudden no one wants to admit they think x, or even discuss x from a rational standpoint. Everyone will just remember the violence.

The more I look around their site, the more convinced I am that it's legitimate.

And I don't feel that it's outside of the realm of plausibility that these products would exist at these prices. Minimalists tend to take minimalism pretty seriously and are, paradoxically, generally wealthier than non-minimalists.

If any of these products don't actually exist, they probably should. I'm sure there's a market for them.

>About the sixth bus, apparently the sicarios realized it wasn't who they were looking for and shouted: "we fucked up", and the leader replied: "leave no witness alive"
