dependsontheq··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
Putin no longer sees this as an economic conflict, all decisions they have taken are against their economic interests, as is the war itself. They are currently killing the rest of their economy with mobilization for some south Ukrainian fields and destroyed towns. They stopped supplying gas and are running deficits at the same time. So assuming an economic motive is just wrong this has become a classic political conflict, the only use the Russian leadership has for an “economy” is as a political tool.

So this attack makes perfect sense, distrust in the West, confusion, no way back.

dependsontheq··on European natural gas imports and storage reserves
There actually seems to be an investigation into leadership of the energy department of the relevant department. Nothing is proven but some things raised suspicions.
dependsontheq··on Apple Introduces Apple Watch Ultra
It looks like Apple took a hard look at decades of classic watch ads. And decided to do the same.

It actually looks exactly like these ads.

dependsontheq··on Porsche boss faces software woes keeping VW a step behind Tesla
I think somebody coded for “no contact with the smart key in the last 15 minutes“ … which is even more ridiculous because the car could easily be standing at home and never leave the smart key range.
dependsontheq··on Porsche boss faces software woes keeping VW a step behind Tesla
I wouldn't call it "woes".

I have been driving an VW ID 3 since last year, it runs their custom Android OS System and should have all of the latest features. It has been quite an experience.

The car is fine, basic driving functions are fine, even the driver assist features are generally fine if they are running.

The software running all the displays and the "augmented" heads up display is ridiculous.

The car one did shut down all displays (including speed) while driving on the Autobahn (error message: no input), I stopped in the next town, charging the car was no longer possible. I tried to find out how to do hard reboot, my wife found a thread in a forum, "leave the car with all smart keys, go at least 50 meters from the car, wait for 15 minutes". That did the trick.

Sometimes the voice recognition comes on and does something weird, I have no idea why or what it tries to do, sometimes it starts a specific radio station, it has not once recognized anything I said.

Some Update added a blue light glowing in front of the driver in the small LED strip, it just ominously glows for a second. It looks a bit like a warning, I have no idea what it is warning about, it just happens sometimes.

Sometimes in the night the alarm starts and wakes the neighborhood, but I was able to solve that by disabling the proximity features in the smart key system.

The navigation forgets that I can charge the car at home after every update. 20 kilometers before I am home it recommends I should charge for 2 hours.

The UI/UX is unintuitive and ugly. It shows a lot of useless information in weird places and a lot of stuff is hard to find.

The list of weird experiences I had with this car is endless, and a lot of is just just bad software development, like the issue on the Autobahn.

dependsontheq··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
There are no ICBMS in Germany only tactical bombs... these have no military value, there only value is to say that European countries have shared nuclear deterrence.

And Russia is big, they have an immense second strike capability from land and from the sea. Wladiwostok is 8000km away from Kiev.

dependsontheq··on Land-use changes across Europe linked to mortality during the Black Death
In general yes but you had areas with more death and the societal collapse afterwards had it's fair share in that.
dependsontheq··on Mars rover detects carbon signature that may hint at past life source
I think one thing to keep in mind is that we haven't been here for very long. And as a technological society that is able to be detected or detect something we have been here for something between 70 or 5 years or 0 years depending on the definition. So the great filter is something that hinders us to detect detectable civilizations. But we are at the moment not totally sure if we are already detectable.

So per definition the great filter has to be in front of us as long as we wouldn't be able to find ourselves.

dependsontheq··on How trains could replace planes in Europe
In general it's mostly a behavioral thing, if you get used to train trips they become easier and the way you use your time becomes very efficient.

Two weeks ago I traveled to Antwerpen from Nuremberg in Bavaria and back in three days. A plane might have saved me three hours in real time, but that is not worth the carbon emission or the lack of "place" for me.

Of course I would't take a 40 hour train trip to Portugal, but I took a one day trip from our home to Bordeaux with two small kids and that worked quite brilliant.

Next week I will go by sleeper train to Neapel, visit Pompeii stay for a night and go back by sleeper train.

I don't know, it has it's problems and there are a lot of things that go wrong but it also has feeling of "place" of change. Even on business trips I don't have the feeling of somehow switching between arbitrary grey meeting rooms with a plane.

I think there are a lot of things that can become better but the international lines have already become much better in the last years and one reason is just that you have Apps to navigate any kind of public transport.

dependsontheq··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
Interesting, just to give some perspective from the other side of the pond, I think in most EU countries it would be totally illegal to build this because you need to have windows.
dependsontheq··on Hertz orders 100k Teslas
Well it never was a "plan" was it? It always was more like a "story".
dependsontheq··on Will the next German parliament have a gigantic size? A law and coding challenge
If one party won all districts 299, and had 0% of the party vote. You would come up with 897 seats in the Bundestag... which is not far from the expected seat number new week.

So it is pretty much a worst case already... I have some friends who might become Members of the Bundestag because of this, but even they are kind of irritated by that and know that nobody they will be talking to about their new seat will be happy about it.

dependsontheq··on Did America just lose Afghanistan because of WhatsApp?
There are enough other networks and apps they could use. It’s just a modern communication channel. The surrender of complete provinces has nothing to do with WhatsApp or Twitter but is a cultural practice in the 40 years Afghan war.
dependsontheq··on As climate warms, a rearrangement of world’s plant life looms
No - since even warming areas will experience weather and climate instability which is very hard to manage. We as humans like plants are good at adapting to certain conditions, if these conditions are volatile we can't adapt. Plants and animals can't adapt.

So no, there is no possibility of anything positive in this.

dependsontheq··on Oregon has legalized human composting
I think your funding should primarily come from Kickstarter, I think that there will be very few lawsuits of people who want to deposit their skull.
dependsontheq··on The Electrification of Everything
Yes and it works fine, here is a weird Electrolux marketing photo https://www.reviewed.com/ovens/features/induction-101-better...

As weird as that looks I’m quite sure I could do that at home.

dependsontheq··on The Electrification of Everything
That’s the difference between cheap and expensive induction... I don’t need a Bain Marie because I can control the temperature that fine.
dependsontheq··on Europe is now a corporate also-ran. Can it recover its footing?
It’s important to see the time effect clearly the internet economy started mostly in The Valley and in that economic network most of the follow up growth happened. Chinas rise produced big companies. What happened is that there is no second or relevant third position in the internet economy and the US companies had a head start.
dependsontheq··on Heart inflammation cases in young men higher than expected after mRNA vaccines
Watching the various vaccines fail in production or in clinical trials gives an interesting perspective on what an amazing and lucky combination BioNTech/Pfizer are. So I think we should be grateful for both companies, amazing scientists and amazing engineers.
dependsontheq··on Germany′s Namibian genocide apology could miss the mark
The difference between Eastern Europe and some parts of Africa is that there were no apologies or reparations of any kind until now.

dependsontheq··on Investigating why McDonald's ice cream machines are often broken [video]
The Taylor revenue from service looks totally reasonable in that business, restaurant equipment needs a lot of service and fails often and you often have no alternative on hand, having fast and helpful service has the same value a good machine has.

The software interface looks stupid, but ... that's really more of an industry problem.

dependsontheq··on EU vaccine rollout severely lags behind
Well it’s all just hindsight - depending on which vaccines are approved first different countries would have one this race. The EU is a bit of a nicer player internationally in general because the only thing holding it together are the common market rules so it is very rules focused.

I think talking about winning or failed vaccination campaigns might be a bit early.

dependsontheq··on Amazon will not sell books that 'frame sexual identity as mental illness'
Every bookstore in history has made decisions about which books to sell and which not. Amazon in this case is just a bookstore and should make a decision, if it’s market power is too big we should split it apart ( an online bookshop is not any kind of regulated utility and should never be one).
dependsontheq··on UK to depart from GDPR
That my be true - but I work with a lot of companies and they way the legal departments are hunting down problems has changed dramatically.

I have customers that are asking "Do we really need this kind of data".

dependsontheq··on Europe Does Well in Innovation
Everybody who is always optimistic emigrated to the US in the last 200 years... I think genetic selection might be in play here ;-)
dependsontheq··on Europe Does Well in Innovation
I think your comment is an interesting example for the complexity of our small continent, for our shared but complicated history and our massively different viewpoints on everything. I think that makes the EU an even more impressive experiment.
dependsontheq··on Europe Does Well in Innovation
It's complicated. There are some factors that make any such comparisons very difficult, the EU is a complicated political entity uniting nearly 30 different cultures. That is a stunning achievement. It's also not really one market, in many ways it is but to actually sell something in all member countries I need to adapt to at least 20 different markets. There are the new eastern european members who actually often have difficult political problems, there are old members like Italy with ridiculous political problems (it's not the EUs fault that founding a company or taking another company to court takes ages in Italy). It's also a rapidly aging continent, that makes a comparison to the US difficult. Sure some things are stupid, sure the EU is bureaucratic (but I always wonder how a common market with 30 countries can be done any other way), sure it's slow (how could it be any way else), but it represents more than 400 million people trying to build a shared future. And it's the only example of something like that in human history. Look how good the relationship with between the US and Mexico works, the way the US structures its relationship (guns, border walls) is mostly responsible for an insane drug war. Look how China structures it's relationship with it's neighbors. I think it's highly likely that most neighboring countries will join the EU step by step, ant the EU will adapt change, become more effective, less effective. But it's hard to compare such a unique human experiment with anything.

dependsontheq··on Uighurs: 'Credible case' China carrying out genocide
I'm european (English/German) I am quite happy that the US is in the Middle East...otherwise we all would have to be. I see no chance that the Middle East becomes a nice peaceful place between the Saudis, Iran, Israel and Turkey (all others are just puppets). I am not sure what an honest broker would do, I am not sure that anybody in the relevant parties wants an honest broker. No question there have been terrible mistakes that cost an enormous amount of human suffering. I am not quite sure that the situation would be much different in another world. If the US had not invaded Iraq...would Iraq now be a stable happy country? No, why would it be?
dependsontheq··on Uighurs: 'Credible case' China carrying out genocide
There is no right way and ethical way to do things in the Middle East - there is just the weird unsolvable status quo and weird things the US or anyone else can do - which might not actually have an effect on anything. I understand the criticism but I never read a book that showed a path forward.
