demygale··on Join testing of brand new email client
Some feedback. Link directly to your site. A pr.com url looks scammy and unprofessional (to me).

There’s no mention of pricing. I know it’s in beta but products that don’t make it super easy to find pricing are an instant no for me. I’m not even downloading.

Finally, the web page mentions “ethically sourced contacts”. It sounds like your mail client is going to store all of my contacts on your server. Putting the word “ethically” in front of this does not make it better. Why do you need my contacts on your server? Do the messages pass through your server? There’s no technical reason for this, so it just seems like data harvesting.

demygale··on Ask HN: Job Options for software engineer
These numbers seem…high.
demygale··on Crazy New Ideas
Does Thiel count as reasonable?
demygale··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
You don’t have to match contract wages. There are benefits other than salary that contractors don’t have access to.

But let’s be honest. It’s a marketplace. The solution to hiring is more money. That’s how capitalism works.

demygale··on Ask HN: What’s the Next Big Thing?
By your logic cryptocurrency should be the answer now.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain have not been a big thing the last ten years, in that no one has solved a business problem or built something useful with it. My phone uses ML every day to tag the pictures on my phone. Developers use containers for deploying projects. These are shipped solutions.

So if crypto is going to be big, this is just the ground floor. We don’t know who the winner will be and how it will look —- who will be Google and who will be Alta vista? So far crypto and blockchain are just for speculators.

demygale··on Ask HN: Where to Go After SF?
Long time resident of Atlanta. As a Southerner I don’t consider “it is the south” to be a con, and I really do enjoy living in Atlanta. I’m here by choice and feel confident I could live in almost any city I wanted.

I don’t think you’ll find Atlanta a tech hub on par with SF, though there are great jobs here. If you do choose to live here I wouldn’t live in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. It’s strip malls and Trumpers. The fascists in the city at least have sense enough not to advertise it with lawn signs. In the suburbs they are proud of it.

demygale··on Ask HN: How to Read the Bible?
Study bibles — and a great deal of writing about the Bible — have a religious and evangelical perspective. They’re written by believers for believers.

If you want to read the Bible to better understand your religion, find a study bible that approaches the subject from the perspective of your religion.

If you want to read the Bible as literature, it’s not too hard to filter out the proselytizing.

And yeah, we know that the Bible was written by scientifically illiterate people and modern organized religion isn’t much better. The question isn’t should I read the Bible but how.

Sorry you had a hard time in Christian day school.

demygale··on Ask HN: How to Read the Bible?
Get a study bible. The Bible itself is a vast work of literature spanning millennia and isn’t meant to be read cover to cover like a novel. It does not contain enough contextualization to guide you. You will require outside context for understanding.

A study bible will help with this. Also, read the Wikipedia page for each book of the Bible before you read that book. It will greatly help your understanding.

I am an atheist but have read the Bible extensively because it’s the foundation of western literature.

demygale··on Ask HN: Why can't I run xcode/iMessage on Linux?
>Because Apple is a monopolist There's little about Apple's place in the market that makes them a monopoly. Using this word to describe companies that engage in anti-consumer behavior is reductive and unhelpful.
demygale··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
>“The steps we’re taking today are painful, but necessary,” Dropbox CEO Drew Houston said in an employee memo Wednesday.

Did they consider the "painful, but necessary" step of not paying the CEO $110 million salary?

demygale··on Parler LLC vs. Amazon Web Services Inc
Parler has a moderation policy and they don’t apply it. Content that promotes illegal activity is not protected free speech and is also prohibited by Parler’s policies. They selectively applied that moderation after they became popular with MAGA.

Also, 4chan exists why can’t Parler find a host?

demygale··on Ask HN: As a teacher, how could I convince my 12 yo pupils to get vaccinated?
The compromise between disinformation and information is disinformation
demygale··on Ask HN: As a teacher, how could I convince my 12 yo pupils to get vaccinated?
I don’t think you should try to convince them to get vaccinated or to take this vaccine. They’re 12 and likely not legally of age to make their own medical decisions.

You should educate them on the history of diseases and vaccinations and why this one is safe (no live virus). There are lots of resources. Just give them facts. You can’t stop all anti-vaccers

demygale··on Ask HN: Please share your experience teaching your kids to program
Didn’t work.

I could tell from an early age that my son wasn’t interested in coding. But still I showed him what I did and the basics of programming. In high school when he had a class that required Java programming, I helped with the assignment. But it was always drudgery.

Eventually I convinced him to look into engineering professions and he went for a year to a top engineering school in environmental engineering. But he never had an engineer’s mind.

He switched schools, got a degree in biology and now works with animals.

I knew he would most likely work with animals from the age of five. I just wanted him to see other options. He’s very, very happy in his profession and that’s rewarding to see.

demygale··on Ask HN: What can a technologist do about climate change?
I completely agree. A solution is available to us right now: regulation. Ignoring this solution in favor of economic growth or a future magic bullet is folly.

Demand your government do more. If you are in the US and a Republican, at least politely request that your party acknowledge climate change as a reality.

demygale··on No More Google
I’ve been slowly moving away from Google for a few years. There are no Google apps on my phone. I use Chrome only when signing into Google accounts like gmail or docs and I only do that rarely. I’ve moved most of my workflow elsewhere.

Gmail is the hardest for me to replace. Everything else was not difficult at all.

demygale··on Chrome exempts Google sites from user site data settings
Chrome is the Internet Explorer of this decade. I’m old enough to remember when some developers defended IE when it was hot trash. There’s just no excuse for using it.
demygale··on Ask HN: Modern office life has become unbearable to me
You may find mental health counseling useful. A therapist can help you discover the aspects of your office life that are in conflict with your core values, and the aspects that are mere annoyances. This isn’t a suggestion that you are depressed. It’s a suggestion that what you’re experiencing isn’t normal or healthy, it’s not something the rest of us endure. Counseling might help you develop a plan for fixing it.
demygale··on Coinbase offers exit package for employees not comfortable with its mission
What if the problem at hand is ending structural racism in the workplace?
demygale··on Ask HN: Thoughts on how we can alleviate homelessness?
Give them homes and access to medical care. The only thing stopping us is the belief that they have to “earn it” first.
demygale··on Ask HN: Dealing with monitoring software on work computers and transparency
Having the ability to read your work email is not the same as having a legal right to do so. My employer doesn’t have a legal right to view the contents of my purse or car even on company property.

I realize the legality question will be different depending on the country, but my experience working in the EU says people have a much higher expectation of privacy on their work computer.

demygale··on Ask HN: How do I “make the switch” towards becoming a director or VP
I’m happiest as an individual contributor so this is not from personal experience, just observation.

Start doing the job you want to be in. Solve the problems that the director or VP are solving. And find a mentor.

demygale··on Head of Danish intelligence suspended after whistleblowers hand over information
Could you imagine a government agency spying on its own citizens? In America that would be illegal and unconstitutional.

We would have to immediately defund that agency.

demygale··on Ask HN: 9-5 Burnout?
Most 9-5 employees work a lot less than you think. Coders tends to think of productivity as all day long. Any task that isn’t coding is not productive. Look at a day in the life of management or administrative roles and you’ll see why the burn out a lot less.
demygale··on 2019-20 flu season: 0.02% total excess deaths in Europe
The citation needed anti-science crowd comes out hard in any HN COVID-19 discussion. I don’t know about you guys but the only sources I need are Joe Rogan and Elon Musk. Scientists are just trying to mind control us with scary science!
demygale··on 2019-20 flu season: 0.02% total excess deaths in Europe
You’ve done some math.

But consider that virus scientists, epidemiologists, front line health care workers, and hospital administrators have concluded that COVID-19 is much worse than the seasonal flu.

Your math does not explain full ICUs and government officials begging for medical ventilators. It’s not the flu.

Have you considered reading the thoughts and opinions of people paid to be experts on this?

demygale··on Ad Boycott of Facebook Keeps Growing
Most reputable media outlets will not run ads, especially political ads, that contain false information. There’s enormous latitude in this area. It hasn’t stopped attack ads or misleading information from entering political discourse.

Facebook is refusing to apply any standard of editorial control over these ads. It’s their platform, their decision. I think it’s harmful to society and will happily talk shit about Facebook because of it.

They control ever byte if content on the platform and censor and surveil their users with alacrity. Choosing to allow deceptive campaign advertising does not make Facebook a leader in free speech.

demygale··on Ask HN: Who is (back to) working in the office?
We are tentatively supposed to go back to the office in mid July. We have a few floors in a fifteen story office building. The plan is to bring a reduced group in with those who need to stay remote still having that option. Masks in all common areas but I’m assuming not in your cube.

I don’t think this will work. I don’t believe it’s possible to have safe offices until Covid19 is completely out of the population.

I suspect they will cancel these plans before they go into place or within a month of starting back up.

demygale··on Ask HN: Will we ever know what is the actual death rate of Covid-19?
Counterpoint. Countries are reporting higher death rates in even if you take out the deaths attributed to COVID-19. One possible explanation for this difference is people are dying from COVID-19 and not being counted as victims of the pandemic.

Financial Times has some reporting on this.
