del_operator··on What Is the Geometry of the Universe?
Haven’t read this yet, but another good question is why can’t we know the topology of the universe.
del_operator··on Bach's prelude in C major written in sed
Oh, wow. Is it common that Bach Prelude refers to Well Tempered Clavier or was I just biased by my obsession with Gould and his WTC book 1 prelude?
del_operator··on The Wonders of the Suffix Tree Through the Lens of Ukkonen’s Algorithm
The Burrows-Wheeler transform was an interesting thing to see! When I used to teach at an immersive 3 month program for web dev we had a few weeks of playing with such arrays, trees, tries, dynamic programming, and text from Wikipedia.
del_operator··on Is the era of the $100 graphing calculator coming to an end?
Takes me back to the days of my HP 50g.
del_operator··on How Postgres Makes Transactions Atomic (2017)
Interesting coincidence that early yesterday I found this blog when searching for transaction patterns. I skimmed the transactions for idempotent apis (2017) and its part ii. Hadn’t heard of it before but liked the diagrams

Reminds me of the story of how Lithium was initially thought help “brain gout” by dissolving uric crystals, but it still ended up working.

Read an interesting story of a physicist that got curious about it. https://www.quantamagazine.org/a-new-spin-on-the-quantum-bra...

del_operator··on Material Design Guidelines for Dark Mode
Working on a dark theme UI, currently. I appreciate our design team developing rules around this, many similarities, and creating easy to use components and types to rapidly develop new dark theme features. They also iteratively extract and standardize more reused and mature UI components into a design lib. It’s nice to be able see those in isolation with various states and config.
del_operator··on Clear is better than clever [pdf]
Reminds me of an early code review that preferred applying De Morgan’s law and being initially surprised. It was a small chat that started talks of the clever vs readability on a small team.

Similar things would happen with say map(f) |> map(g) vs map(f |> g). My clev-dar just reminds me to ping the reviewer or leave a note.

del_operator··on I'm Against Podcasts
Do the popular podcast styles eventually feel like a transform that muddles the truth of the experiences? I could see how it could cause some anxiety when actual experience isn’t condensed into truthy bits. I think that’s something I’d see more in writing, but haven’t personally expected from podcasts.
del_operator··on Elementary Applied Topology (2014)
Clicking this video I am fairly certain I’ve read a handwritten book by Ghrist on Applied Algebraic Topology and Sensor Networks. It’s short and fun

I’ve also been reading about persistence more in the Edelsbrunner and Harer Computational Toplogy text, but glancing at this book on page 104 I see good examples and intuitive build up.

I found this overview I liked for persistence in ML

del_operator··on Reinforcement Learning and Optimal Control
I liked the open courseware lectures with John Tsitsiklis and ended up with a few books by Bertsekas: neuro dynamic programming and intro probability. Both Bertsekas and Tsitsiklis recommended the Sutton and Barto intro book for an intuitive overview. I liked it.
del_operator··on Abelson on Computer Science
Magically, the first minute or so spells it out.
del_operator··on Wooden Statue Found in Late 1890s Likely Dates Back More Than 11,000 Years
I'm no expert, but examine the front of the Shigir Idol and see three distinct sections of patterns: lines, single wave, double wave. I was "stumped." I wanted to get to the root of this.

Borrowing a technique from Carl Sagan's Contact where Arroway and Hadden interpreted the Vega message, I then thought like I was from Planet X. The meaning of these three sections became obvious in higher dimensions...

del_operator··on Why is the ocean salty?
I'd be salty too if I had such a rocky interaction with the world.

"IT'S [STILL] ALIVE!"
del_operator··on Intel needs to come clean about Meltdown and Spectre
We can't all be Spectre-tators. :P
del_operator··on Meltdown Update Kernel doesnt boot
Sounds like one way to stop the bug. :P
del_operator··on Is beaming down in Star Trek a death sentence?
Polyopic heatuscopy is just an odd hallucination where you are split into multiple copies of yourself. You and your forks are aware of each others thoughts, but you may not be able to distinguish the real you.
