deivid··on Ask HN: Which VM orchestrator do you use?
you can still export a container and run it as a vm with a bit of effort: https://blog.davidv.dev/docker-based-images-on-baremetal.htm...
deivid··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2022)
Optiver | SRE / Infrastructure engineer | Amsterdam, Netherlands | Full Time | $160-$205k | https://optiver.reallinks.io/r/Xx2mfQKx

Optiver is a leading trading firm driven by technology with over one thousand employees globally. We pioneer our own trading strategies and systems using clean code and sophisticated technology, running a global network with thousands of high-performance low-latency applications that solve problems in nanoseconds.

Our Linux Team ensures our trading servers work so we can trade. They establish that our production environment works optimally by deploying, maintaining, monitoring and operating a fleet of UNIX servers to its highest possible performance.

---

In a nutshell, we provide, install and maintain over 1800 physical servers on 14 colocations, and debug tricky issues that pop up when you are pushing the limits of compute & networking.

We provide relocation assistance and visa sponsorship in the Netherlands.

deivid··on Web3 is centralized
At least my problem with this entire ecosystem is that it enables artificial scarcity on digital goods, which wasn't really feasible before.
deivid··on Show HN: Mum's 80th birthday present- a rotary phone from the 1970's
I did a similar thing a couple of years ago, but with a TV instead of a phone (and for my dad).

https://blog.davidv.dev/revamping-an-old-tv-as-a-gift.html

The gist of it was putting a Pi inside a b/w CRT, soldering the GPIO to the tuner and that way you could change the channels. I even put fake static on some of them.

The software ended up horrible as I ran out of time.. but it worked great!

deivid··on Firecracker MicroVMs
I build them from docker images: https://blog.davidv.dev/docker-based-images-on-baremetal.htm...
deivid··on Google shifting to “upstream first” Linux kernel approach for Android features
you can get something like ubports on a poco f1. the apps will probably be lacking for you though
deivid··on Raspberry Pi KVMs Compared: TinyPilot and Pi-KVM v3
i used to have one of those "hdmi over ethernet" devices which i captured with ffmpeg and used for his purpose. worked well, about 100ms latency for the capture/conversion
deivid··on Revolt of the Delivery Workers
sounds like the old tilt sensor from arcade games could be useful? start blasting an alarm if the rider is not around and the bike shakes
deivid··on Firefox 92
Hey! I wrote this for myself https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/external-app-...

it is fairly crude, but I use i daily.

Code lives here https://github.com/DavidVentura/Firefox_External_Application...

deivid··on May Update: Connection Established
Something I also want to investigate -- CPU is at 100% on 1 core for 5~ seconds when launching anything. Not even waiting for IO, it's mostly user time
deivid··on May Update: Connection Established
I'm migrating my toy HN app to GTK4 as well, it's not always free performance though, the pp GPU is extremely bad, even worse than the CPU. My app actually was slower on GTK4, although removing rounded corners and shadows as the devs recommended actually made it a lot faster than the GTK3 version.
deivid··on The Distribution Vector That Changed Linux Forever
take a look at https://netboot.xyz/
deivid··on Hack an Analog TV into a Geek TV
I did something similar as a gift for my dad, sadly documented it after the fact (which means missing high quality pics / videos of the process)

deivid··on The Boyer-Moore Fast String Searching Algorithm
Is this faster than Aho-Corasick? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aho%E2%80%93Corasick_algorit...
deivid··on Ask HN: How to relocate to Europe as a software developer
try jobs in netherlands/amsterdam. they don't require dutch, most people here (>90%?) speak very good english. just find a job that does visa sponsorship (a lot do). good luck.
deivid··on January Update: Happy New Gear
on debian you could just install gcc-10-aarch64-linux-gnu and have a working cross compiler?
deivid··on Home Made Raspberry Pi Standing Desk Controller
you can use micropython for this, a repl over usb or wifi
deivid··on How Did Vim Become So Popular?
I think this really depends on what you work on.

> Not to mention visual debuggers, not to mention remote debugging! The VS IntelliTrace feature alone is worth the cost of the entire IDE.

I use gdb and pudb, which are both CLI based, and have done so for years

> Visual Studio Live Share lets two people concurrently use the entire IDE at the same time, remotely: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/services/live-share/

Tmux has let me do this for over 10 years

There are things I do not do in vim, but they are few. For example, I've developed a few Android applications as a side project and I used netbeans for it. For rust, go, c, python, I've always used vim.

deivid··on Ansible Alternatives in Python
try the mitogen plugin. we went from 2 hours to 15 minutes in run time
deivid··on Bose QC 35 Firmware 4.5.2 Noise Cancellation Investigation Report
I have, at [1], though this is literally the first time I dabble in android apps, so quality is alpha at best. I use it frequently ant works for me though.

deivid··on Espresso-hole – EspressoBin-based personal router with ad blocking
I have one of these. While the device is great, be advised that if you upgrade your kernel you'll most likely hit a cpu bug. The only way to avoid this is by limiting cpu freq at 600mhz.
deivid··on Cedarwood: Efficiently-Updatable Double Array Trie in Rust
Why is it that this page takes 10s to render some basic text? I have third-party JS disabled, but if I also disable first-party JS the text renders immediately..
deivid··on Show HN: Automatically synchronize subtitles with video
please do
deivid··on Debugging Emacs, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love DTrace (2018)
You can trace dtrace probes with ebpf.. see https://github.com/iovisor/bpftrace/blob/master/docs/referen...
deivid··on German Addresses are Blocked: www.gutenberg.org
I can access from my VPN hosted at hetzner
deivid··on Amazon Sends 1,700 Alexa Voice Recordings to a Random Person
Look up mycroft.ai (open source) or snips.ai (offline)
deivid··on Why I'm Ditching Android
you can get phones that allow AOSP. Most xiaomi phones do. I have one running exclusively FOSS apps. If you don't mind the form factor, the Pyra is coming out this year
deivid··on Show HN: Mole – an open source tool to easily create ssh tunnels
It doesn't guess. It sinoly has local echo, and the characters that are not-yet-ack'd are underlined. Changes your life when working with 175ms+ latency
