deith··on BSD vs. Ubuntu motd(5)
With a PPA you can't upload binaries, you upload sources that can be audited, and Canonical builds them.
deith··on BSD vs. Ubuntu motd(5)
Many things. Mostly PPAs. I can install Ubuntu Stable and use the most recent version of PHP, which has been built and is stored in Canonical's servers. With Debian, that's a gamble: either wait until the Debian developers stop bikeshedding and upload a new version of PHP to experimental, breaking all my system if I install it, or I have to add a repo from some guy I don't know or trust.
deith··on BSD vs. Ubuntu motd(5)
"single init=/bin/bash" has served me well since forever
deith··on BSD vs. Ubuntu motd(5)
If Debian offered the same things Ubuntu does, people wouldn't use Ubuntu. But, alas, they don't.
deith··on WiFi deauthentication attacks and home security
Let me guess, you can also build a better dropbox with curlftpfs
deith··on In New York, Making Ends Meet on a 5-Cent Recycling Deposit
Why don't they take a mail truck on Mother's day, fill it with bottles and bring it to Michigan? I heard it's 10 cents there.
deith··on WiFi deauthentication attacks and home security
Not sure if DoSing a device that's not yours is much more legal.
deith··on Hackers are breaking into websites and adding links to game Google
This has been a hit and miss for me, and that's actually worse, because when I get that "wordpress has updated on its own" email I get the feeling of security, and then months later I log into the admin area only to find wordpress decided not to install a core update for... whatever reason
deith··on The perpetuation of bonded labor in Pakistan
My first post was strictly political. Now, about health: it is not good or desirable to feel bad about things you can do nothing about. Any therapist will tell you that.
deith··on The perpetuation of bonded labor in Pakistan
You can't, and you don't have to. It's their problem and their responsibility. They have the right to do whatever they want within their sovereign territory, for better or for worse.
deith··on Go through your family's phone settings and turn on all the privacy features
>Do you like watching normie stuff?

I don't watch popular youtubers, I don't listen to (currently) popular music, I don't watch the television, I don't watch sports. I even get make-up tutorials, and I'm a male! That's all the front page of youtube has to offer to me: things that I'm unlikely to ever click on.

>I feel like without a recommendation algorithm the site would be largely useless?

That's because for you and many other people youtube is an activity, like turning on the telly. You open youtube and you expect to be entertained, and that's what the recommendation algorithm is for. For me, youtube is a tool: I open it, search for something, watch it, then close it.

deith··on Go through your family's phone settings and turn on all the privacy features
When I go on youtube, my front page is full of the normiest things of my country. Makes me think... either I'm really good at blocking, or they don't care enough to actually try harder to track me. Or they do actually track me hard enough and they are pretending not to by showing me normie stuff, which gives me false hope about how good I am at hiding my tracks. How far does the rabbit hole go??

The mail address seems to check out.
deith··on Windows 10 is getting an easier way to update and install drivers
Only that they are not optional, they force you to install those drivers (unless you're installed your own before). But they do indeed show up on Windows Update.

deith··on Windows 10 is getting an easier way to update and install drivers
Every part of my computer, which I built myself, gets its drivers from Windows Update. Drivers have been pushed from Windows Update since... forever? Granted, I always install a more recent version myself.

Modern != better
deith··on Merry Christmas HN
Feliz Navidad y próspero año nuevo.
deith··on Morons Funding the Fight Against Morons
The best part of the Republic of Weimar, second only to its demise, was the infighting. Now that we get to see it on Internet forums, I can only be happy to live in this age.
deith··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
>should buses

No. They are generally safe and people NEED to get around to live. They don't NEED to get high though.

>cycling also be banned? How about alcohol?

Yes, definitely. Both things are risky and bad. But that would be hard to achieve. Since weed has never been legal (at least here), things can go on the way they are.

deith··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
I agree with you science nowadays is mostly junk. On the other hand if we can choose to ignore any study that links X to something bad, then this is a conversation not worth having.

Myself I like to err on the side of caution, since my country has free healthcare which means I have to pay for the mistakes of others, so I don't want them making mistakes in the first place. They should feel free to smoke all the weed they want and become psychotic drones in the fucking Congo

deith··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
US is not the only country in the world, and there have been studies linking teenage use to psychosis and schizophrenia
deith··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
You don't have to go and look on social media, just come here to HN and say "perhaps weed is not completely safe and we should research whether it could damage the brain" to get downvoted
deith··on First Woman to Beat a Man at World Darts Overwhelmed by Response
>this win is a marker of a broader social movement around gender and gender equality

Nah it's not. It's someone winning at a sport.

deith··on ToTok, an Emirati messaging app, is the latest escalation of a digital arms race
Okay, wait, I got it. He confused totok (the app this article discusses) with tiktok, and he's mad that he got shadowbanned on tiktok for posting ukelele videos.
deith··on ToTok, an Emirati messaging app, is the latest escalation of a digital arms race
>ToTok amounts to the latest escalation in a digital arms race among wealthy authoritarian governments

Why wealthy? You don't need much wealth to create a chat app.

deith··on ToTok, an Emirati messaging app, is the latest escalation of a digital arms race
The only way to read guys who are shadowbanned is to enable "showdead" in your profile. You won't automatically read their comments even if you are shadowbanned yourself if you don't enable the showdead option.
deith··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
Why without a warrant?

Why "to catch terrorists"? There are lots of crimes and even civil matters for which this is useful.

deith··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
"Would you like the government to be able to read private messages so they can investigate and catch criminals?"

Go and ask that, you'd be surprised.

deith··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
Why is this an "open letter" instead of being passed as law? I understand that you might write an open letter when you are powerless to change something, but this is a government...
