never used it curious to know if anybody have
its the go to pattern because its the most resilient and intuitive
we've been using emails for a long time and it makes sense that it became the go to authentication method
You don't even need to use Hetzner, I'm actually quite surprised they are spending 2k on DB. For the env isolation i understand they need ec2 but...
it shouldn't cost anywhere that amount, for instance I have 3 million users on a $40/month digital ocean VPS with just Django + Postgres and I have far more reads and writes.
for env isolation you could spin up a $5/month VPS and shut it down when idle
For example, I serve roughly 3 million users on a $40/month VPS. I only run Postgres + Django, if I use Supabase and all these other fancy cloud SaaS I wouldn't be able to sustain it as the costs would increase 10~20x fold.
even getting people to click on affiliate links that won't cost them anything I find is tough as most people remove the referral link or purchase on another device probably out of privacy concerns.
you would have to infiltrate an extremely guarded facility
you would somehow have to bypass QA
its not like somebody on the assembly line for a new protein drug sprinkles a dose of PCP
one potential dual use could be somebody modifying a popular fruit with birds and then droppin seeds at the local organic farm fair
and then when those seeds are consumed by birds they produce poop dangerous for other animals to consume
you could absolutely screw around with the ecosystem, like whoever has access to this programmable "bio-wafer" will be able to play god totally undetected.
the problem is that "bio-wafer" manufacturing process will be very tough and regulated like the CNC machines used to manufacture jet engines depriving certain countries from being able to churn out their own jet engines
With that level of understanding, its easy to fabricate special medicines that target specific biochem pathways, but more exciting is that we can literally "code in 3d world". We'll be able to print and grow organs in mass. We'll be able to design structures that will bind to target proteins responsible for certain traits. The potential boon to human medicine will be enormous.
I got like goosebumps after watching that video because I understood the implications of being able to predict folds and now generate proteins that will bind to any protein we choose!!!!
We just might have discovered a panacea of sorts and Demis and his team should receive the Nobel Prize.
I'm just ecstatic that we'll see so much drastic improvement in human medicine and importantly how accessible they will be with this new discovery.
Definitely not what the rest of us are discussing.
struggling with immigration from india is very real in Canada and we can't keep censoring or avoiding it because its uncomfortable
or the employer is your own startup.
trust me 200k wasnt enough in vancouver downtown (i rent)
color of skin isnt the issue, its who contributes to taxes and society in balance so as many surface areas can be served without anyone feeling left out
singapore's multiculturalism works but why doesnt Japan's?
because its clear that whatever you guys have its working
the weather tax too doesn't make sense. extremely cold and hot weather. at least in BC its functional and get little snow.
i donno where to go tbh, hoping to land a remote gig somehow but job market is super tough.
My dream right now is living in East Asia working remotely earning USD. Canada has remained stagnant while that region surpassed it in many areas.
One of the saddest most recent example that coincides with the surge of immigration from India was the Canadian medical system being DDOS'd essentially forcing MAID onto those that could've been absolutely saved had it not been for the long queue.
Nobody should have to wait for 10+ hours in emergency rooms to see a overworked doctor who makes mistakes.
Canada's selling point was a public healthcare system that simply is outdated and has to use private healthcare with the changing demographic and population surge.
If Canada can't even provide adequate universal healthcare with its hefty taxes, then what is it actually good for? We can't even own guns because using them in self defence gets your life ruined by the media. Entrepreneurs and best engineers all work for Americans.
There is a wide discontent with Canada but healthcare has been the biggest flashpoint for politics but I have no faith. For example, it took the American DOJ to identify and fine Canadian banks for money laundering.
I've even heard people lament saying they miss Chinese international students who would spend a lot of money, creating jobs but these new Indian "students" just show up at food banks taking everything, overcrowding homes, taking advantage of government benefits, jobs meant for new graduates, nepotism, just DDOSing the whole Canadian infrastructure as a whole is the popular opinion.
I don't know what to do about it and neither do the politicians. I'm not exactly thrilled to be importing this many people from India, a country which I frankly don't have any interest or passion for.
Everyday I just long to be away from it all but tough to do that when you rely on payment from one location.
Can confirm 100k salary in Vancouver is nothing. Even 200k I wasn't saving money.
What makes me angry is learning 1/4 jobs in Canada is a government job. Taxes, housing, society (I don't even feel like I live in Canada sometimes).
I don't know what other options there are. It's quite bleak and living in Canada takes a toll on your mental health.
I envy you...
