deftturtle··on Bring Back the SE
I noticed the other day that the SE/5s screen is exactly the dimension of a standard business card.
deftturtle··on Apple has copied some of the most popular apps in the App Store
1. Make a platform so locked down that basic features are lacking. 2. Prevent users from easily writing and executing scripts to add functionality, like Greasemonkey. 3. Sell apps that cover missing features. 4. Improve your original operating system, rendering paid apps useless.

I’d like to see Apple let AppleScript be executed on the Apple Phone. I’d like to have more control over my device, like an Android. Maybe someday...

deftturtle··on Report says Apple to release new ‘iPhone SE’ with 4.7-inch display in 2020
I presume it makes it harder to waterproof the phone with multiple ports. Having only one port, either lightning or USB-C, would hopefully lead to a better phone design. And if we’re trying to add Face ID, I assume the headphone jack is wasted space. I can buy an adapter or use the compatible Apple headphones that would be included.

But honestly, I’m done with Apple. I collect old iPhones and use them until they give out. I will not buy another flagship but am really interested in Purism’s phone. Currently have an SE, 5S, 2 5Cs, and a 6. I use them for various purposes and eventually will recycle when they die

I have the same feeling, and I know I should wean myself, but current displays are practically unusable in bright light. And when trying to take photos or read a book, it’d be nice to have options...

It would ship with compatible Apple headphones, and I could buy an adapter. If it saves space for Face ID or something, that’d be a good trade-off for my personal taste

My ideal SE: Updated camera with gyroscopic stabilization.

No camera bump. Instead, make phone slightly thicker and give larger battery.

Next, remove headphone jack, and Touch ID.

Include edge to edge screen like modern iPhones.

Have option for e-Ink or Mirasol screens, to improve battery life and make it easier to read in sunlight.

Kill switch for cellular baseband.

Totally agree. Small body is appealing. Update the tech, keep it small. I’d be willing to forgo touch and Face ID, just to use passcode if necessary. Remove the headphone jack, increase battery life, update camera so it’s stabilized with gyroscope.

Not realistic, but I would also love an e-Ink or Mirasol display option, so that battery life would last much longer. The tech has gotten a lot better, and readability in sunlight is fantastic.

deftturtle··on Ask HN: Commuter Bicycle for City?
Thank you. Definitely looking to save, so Craigslist is great. Commuting in Clackamas County and sometimes within Portland downtown.
deftturtle··on Show HN: Filmtypes – Explore the world of analog film
I live in Portland, and eBay and Craigslist are the best ways I’ve found to get cheap film, either because someone’s done shooting film, or because it’s old and expired. Blue Moon Camera, in St. John’s, also sells expired film in a mixed basket. I would trust their stock.

You have to be very careful with old Polaroid film. It’s common to get ripped off. Unless you can test expired Polaroid film, it is risky to buy. I’m talking about old stuff, like before 2000/2010. I bought two packs of 4x5 Polaroid film. One dried up, the other still seems usable.

In my experience, shooting old 35mm film is perfectly fine, but different stocks will have different degradation. And depending on the color shifts or type of work you shoot, some expired film will look better.

Experiment with some different films at different expiration dates.

I’ve found that older film requires more light. Otherwise, everything is lost in shadow and grain.

deftturtle··on Firefox Nightly on macOS: decrease in power usage by a factor of about 3x
When people say 3 fold, they mean 3 times. I think fold should mean 2^3. When you fold a piece of paper, it doubles each time.

So on the news when they talk about a 10 fold increase, I know they mean 10 times and not 1024 times.

Does anyone else here feel the same, or is fold just another confusing colloquialism?

Thank you! I’m still learning CSS and will have to adjust my style sheets! :)
deftturtle··on Tell HN: Thank you for not redesigning Hacker News
I use barba.js to make my site load faster, but at the initial expense of a JavaScript payload to enable the XHR page delivery. It would be cool if browsers offered an experimental flag, allowing the page to be fetched with XHR by default when possible. Then static sites could be even faster, no Javascript download required, because of a little browser magic

a {padding: 1rem}

This increases area by padding the link. Just don’t want the rap areas of different elements to overlap with too much padding.

You can also put a border around the new area, or a box shadow, to indicate larger click area, making it a button sort of:

{border: thin solid grey}

deftturtle··on Ask HN: Beginner Programmer: Haskell Book or SICP?
Interested in websites, robotics, cryptography, and automating stuff.
deftturtle··on Adblocking: How about Nah?
I also do this. Safari is my stateless browser, no cookies, no scripts, no location access, etc. And then Firefox or Brave are what I use for anything requiring Javascript. Though brave’s UI is much cleaner than FF.
deftturtle··on Landfill is underrated and recycling overrated
> I lose them much faster than that, and have better things to do with my attention than remember to bring bags with me everywhere I go, so I just use those old-school plastic bags whenever I can.

And so ultimately people (consumers) get what they want. If you don’t want to commit to taking steps in a more sustainable fashion, then you contribute to the problem of disposable waste.

deftturtle··on Publishers blocking IPs for alleged sci-hub use
Yes, I’m a student at Linfield College, and our IP gets us certain journals, like Chronicle of Higher Ed, among others. No authentication required
deftturtle··on Dear Google, I'm Blocking You from My Website
Thanks for sharing! After reading I decided to block google as well. Here’s my blog post:

deftturtle··on Google employees are listening to Google Home conversations
I unplugged my family’s Alexa, since they weren’t using it but left it on. They haven’t used it at all for months and haven’t plugged it back in. It sits on their shelf. I wonder if this is common, where families overestimate the usefulness of voice assistants and then rarely use them after a couple months.
deftturtle··on Host Your Own Blog with Gitlab and Netlify
You can receive form submissions, which is very nice for some websites. You can also bundle assets and minify CSS, JS, etc. You can set header rules and cache settings. All of this is not possible with Github as far as I know.

exactly! it's open source, so make it your own if you're not satisfied with someone else's way of doing things. very cool demo.

deftturtle··on Utah Bans Police from Searching Digital Data Without a Warrant, Closes Loophole
It's my opinion that there never should have been a loophole and that the 1970s SCOTUS cases ruled incorrectly about our expectations of privacy for the "third-party doctrine." So this law, in my view, simply restores the 4th amendment protections guaranteed by the US constitution. I'm glad they did it, but as noted in the article, Chief Justice Roberts had to take more complicated positions for Carpenter vs United States, a recent case about cell phone surveillance.

He said cell phone location information "does not fit neatly under existing precedents," but I think the court should just re-evaluate the 1970s cases and come to a place of consistent reasoning about our data, so everything can fit neatly under the protection of the 4th amendment. When we use products or buy things, we expect our data to be private. I don't expect my banker to give away my personal financial information. Nor do I expect my cell phone carrier to share my call history. We do have an expectation of privacy, and the 1970s rulings are hugely flawed, especially in light of today's digital world.

deftturtle··on WordPress theme provider Pipdig using customer sites to DDoS competitors
I'm curious which host you'd recommend. I want a good host for making websites. Not sure if I need to be a reseller or just use their shared hosting. I'm hoping to create lots of static websites for different small businesses, and then cheaply host them. Considering Namecheap, DreamHost, and BlueHost, but I'm also hoping there's one that allows nudity (not porn, just artistic nudity). Or if there's a host that allows any content, that's a plus.

I've been trying to find non-Amazon or non-Google hosting options, wanting to spend my money elsewhere. Is this a waste of time or effort? I imagine that cloud hosting with Google would be less restrictive, though more complicated to setup.

Thanks for any ideas

deftturtle··on The Foursquare of today is a location data giant
We've heard this many times before, but to what end? What does any of this mean in practical terms? What's going to happen? I might be wrong, but nobody I know actually uses Foursquare, and I'm not sure that it offers any tangible value. It seems more people are realizing that location data is a liability these days, and Apple is demanding greater protection for customer data. deftturtle··on New York Times app autoplays video ads on articles even with paid subscription
Adguard works, too. I’ve been using it a while but eventually would like to try a PiHole. Do you find yourself having to adjust the settings often, or does it work fairly well?
deftturtle··on GIMP receives a $100K donation
GIMP's UI is too painful to make me use it. Please make the UI logical and respect system conventions. Standard keyboard shortcuts on my Mac do not work with GIMP. This is horrible for average users that want their software to just work.
deftturtle··on Trout Tickling
How bizarre that such a primitive technique could be banned. You’d think elaborate fishing lures and rods would also be illegal if using your hands is wrong.
deftturtle··on Introducing Telegram Passport
Their messaging application had horrible security in past, and there have been many discussions on HN about Telegram vs Signal. Why would I trust them for ID when their messaging was suspicious....
