deepfriedbits··on Do things that don't scale, and then don't scale
I love this mindset and where we're headed with the cost to build so low now. I follow r/MacApps and it's been wild to see the explosion of quality, specialized apps shared there. I have often thought it's because of Cursor, Claude, and other code production accelerators showing up recently.
deepfriedbits··on AI is different
I am a relentlessly optimistic person and this is the first technology that I've seen that worries me in the decades I've been in the biz.

It's a wonderful breakthrough, nearly indistinguishable from magic, but we're going to have to figure something out – whether that's Universal Basic Income (UBI) or something along those lines, otherwise, the loss of jobs that is coming will lead to societal unrest or worse.

deepfriedbits··on The AI Replaces Services Myth
For now
deepfriedbits··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
This is such bad form to stereotype an entire diverse nation like this. I'd feel the same way about any other nation on earth.
deepfriedbits··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
I had no idea. Thank you!
deepfriedbits··on Why Moderna Merged Its Tech and HR Departments
"The vaccine maker, which has partnered with OpenAI since 2023, is rethinking how it does workforce planning thanks to the growing capabilities of AI and other tech"
deepfriedbits··on A crypto founder faked his death. We found him alive at his dad's house
You've cracked the case. The illuminati at Hacker News huddle once daily and decide whether to release damaging news about crypto in the hopes of suppressing the price of BTC.
deepfriedbits··on NSF faces shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
I'm glad you mentioned this. I've heard analogies to the Cultural Revolution a few times in recent weeks and it's spot on.
deepfriedbits··on Conservative Activist Sues Meta over AI Answers About Him
Defamation suit alleges Meta AI keeps erroneously linking activist to the Jan. 6 riot in Washington, D.C.
deepfriedbits··on White House may seek binding control over Columbia through consent decree
They're also applied to law enforcement agencies in the United States.

deepfriedbits··on Busy Bar
Same. Reminds me of something Teenage Engineering would produce.
deepfriedbits··on Show HN: I completed shipping my desktop app
Congrats! The app (and the website) look really polished.
deepfriedbits··on GitHub cuts AI deals with Google, Anthropic
I love your framing of it as a "better stackoverflow." That's so true. However, I feel like some of our complaints about accuracy and hidden bugs are temporary pain (12-36) months before the tools truly become mind-blowing productivity multipliers.
deepfriedbits··on Egypt declared malaria-free after 100-year effort
This is great. Thanks for sharing!
deepfriedbits··on Atkinson Hyperlegible Font
Oh wow, thanks!
deepfriedbits··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
This might be my ignorance showing, but how do you, as a hiring entity, even verify a candidate has experience in Unit 8200?
deepfriedbits··on Atkinson Hyperlegible Font
It seems as if the past button allows you to view a snapshot of the site on a given day, whereas Dang's bundles are previous instances of the topic/link being discussed on HN.
deepfriedbits··on Dublin Core, what is it good for?
Assume it's connected to OCLC, the Ohio Library College Center, in Dublin?
deepfriedbits··on Pavel Durov and the Blackberry Ratchet
I believe the first iPhone did the work of crushing [Canadian] Blackberry's dominance.
deepfriedbits··on No tax on tips: Why politicians love it, and economists don't
What's wild to me is that in the wake of touchscreens asking for tips at places you never thought to tip before, I felt like we in the States were having a national discussion on tipping.

If any portion of tips is declared tax-free, I believe the practice of tipping will be locked into American society forever.

deepfriedbits··on LLM-based sentiment analysis of Hacker News posts between Jan 2020 and June 2023
I got a fairly good chuckle seeing Gnome as the most divisive topic, too.
deepfriedbits··on Show HN: I've spent nearly 5y on a web app that creates 3D apartments
This is fantastic! Excellent work. Congrats on shipping this.
deepfriedbits··on Show HN: I built an open-source tool to make on-call suck less
Nice job and congratulations on building this! It looks like your copy is missing a word in the first paragraph:

> Opslane is a tool that helps (make) the on-call experience less stressful.

deepfriedbits··on Google is the only search engine that works on Reddit now, thanks to AI deal
On top of that, a sizable chunk of Reddit content is ripped from elsewhere, whether videos, images, etc.
deepfriedbits··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Thanks for highlighting the language. I fear it's not being framed as that, though, and there will be another battle in the court of public opinion for the next TikTok.
deepfriedbits··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Why target TikTok only? They should ban any Chinese social media app or network, and that should remain in effect until China agrees to open its domestic audience to Instagram, Google, Facebook, X, etc.
deepfriedbits··on Show HN: Using Google Sheets as the back end/APIs of your app
I'd like to nominate this comment for the HN Hall of Fame
deepfriedbits··on South Korea has jailed a man for using AI to create sexual images of children
Perhaps because it enables behavior that could eventually lead to a victim? Not a perfect answer and it doesn't mesh with how laws typically work, but this isn't a typical situation.

deepfriedbits··on I am drowning in mutes: The current Threads experience
Good insight. I think what might help them a little bit, however, is that the features they're sure to add in the coming weeks are known commodities at other networks, so people will already be aware of the value the features add, such as a timeline that only shows folks you're following.
