I wouldn’t. PTO is precious to me and planes are many times faster than trains.

Every right, take them to shelters or drug abuse centers, living like this a choice you made

There is less than zero political will to fix it, or even honestly address it.

Man (allegedly self-identified trans woman?) arrested outside Justice Kavanaugh’s house with loaded Glock pistol after expressing intent to assassinate the Justice. Charged with attempting to murder an associate justice of the supreme court.

He likely knew where to find Kavanaugh as the result of highly-publicized protests outside conservative Justices’ homes. Protests at the home of Supreme Court justices are expressly illegal under federal law, a law the Biden DOJ has decided not to enforce.

deepdriver··on Why were medieval monks so susceptible to intestinal worms?
Did some searching, looks like pyrolysis can convert waste into biochar in way that eliminates pathogens:

https://www.susana.org/_resources/documents/default/2-1832-2...

>Complete elimination of pathogens from Human Solid Waste (HSW) is a priority of our biochar reactor. By heating an appropriate flow of input material to high temperatures above 450 C for about 15 minutes, the material thoroughly chars, causing a 100% elimination of pathogens.

Doesn't say anything about heavy metals or pharmaceuticals. In particular I don't know whether heat can denature or destroy birth control hormones like ethinylestradiol. If it's suspended in water, it can be removed through a reverse osmosis or activated charcoal filter. Maybe leaching before charring and filtering the runoff would help? Dunno.

deepdriver··on Why were medieval monks so susceptible to intestinal worms?
Thanks! Had never heard of Milorganite. My interest is purely one of curiosity, specifically how waste might be recycled in a Mars or Moon colony. The Chinese regenerative life support project Lunar Palace 1 claims 41% nitrogen recapture from solid waste, using a "bioreactor" i.e. flippable compost bin:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuegong-1

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27912029/

It's unclear from the published results whether the crew ate food grown from this compost, or just measured the output's nitrogen content.

deepdriver··on Why were medieval monks so susceptible to intestinal worms?
Would combustion affect poop’s fertilizing qualities, or spread bad stuff around in the steam and smoke?
deepdriver··on Why were medieval monks so susceptible to intestinal worms?
Are there effective best-practices to sanitize human waste for manuring? I’ve skimmed the “Humanure Handbook” which suggests a combination of composting (aerobic decomposition) and time (about one year). Are quicker and more energy-intensive options, like charring, equally effective at sanitization without removing plant nutrition?

"Burgers?"

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/are-you-sure-this-will-help-u...

The meme creator is unfortunately quite racist. I see it is a problem if extremists are the only ones comfortable making certain obvious true statements. It attracts the support of people who might otherwise remain moderate.

>And, furthermore, I would rather tech giants err on the side of less censorship.

Agreed, but censoring some hate speech less than others is worse than uniform censorship.

>The only time they ever bother enforcing their own rules is when those subs become enough of a problem that investors or advertisers get cold feet.

Yes, and investors today don't get cold feet about racial hatred of whites, or Reddit would alter their official policies accordingly.

deepdriver··on Michael Jordan: “Republicans Buy Sneakers Too”
Official hate speech policies and enforcement patterns on Reddit, Facebook and Twitter explicitly allow racist speech that targets whites. Facebook:

https://reason.com/volokh/2020/12/07/facebook-discriminating...

>In the first phase of the project, which was announced internally to a small group in October, engineers said they had changed the company's systems to deprioritize policing contemptuous comments about "whites," "men" and "Americans." Facebook still considers such attacks to be hate speech, and users can still report it to the company. However, the company's technology now treats them as "low-sensitivity"—or less likely to be harmful—so that they are no longer automatically deleted by the company's algorithms.

Twitter's stated policies are better, but they allow this kind of slander in practice:

https://twitter.com/AyannaPressley/status/129878054043122483...

Reddit:

https://reclaimthenet.org/reddit-hate-speech-majority-groups...

>While the rule on hate protects such groups, it does not protect all groups or all forms of identity. For example, the rule does not protect groups of people who are in the majority

Historically, Reddit in particular hosted extremely hateful subreddits against black people and other minorities. It seems they decided to correct this by inverting rather than eliminating racial bias. This is not a long-term recipe for social cohesion.

deepdriver··on Ask HN: Is WWIII already in its early stages?
The assertion was "zero talk" of such intervention, my point is that there quite a lot of public and private discussion on the matter. Yes, Biden ultimately shot down the idea (thankfully). Unsettling to me that it picked up enough steam where he felt he had to make a statement on it.

>They have been preparing for a long time, but Taiwan is preparing extremely well, too.

Are they? My coworker doesn't speak highly of his time in Taiwan's armed forces. Government ministers have begun to speak frankly on this issue, too. Apparently they overinvested in expensive, flashy systems like tanks and jets while underinvesting in training, drones, defensive weapons and personnel.

deepdriver··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
Your comment is flamebait, but I'll respond anyway.

We can get a sense of where people like to live based on where they are leaving and where they are going. Of the five fastest-growing cities in America by absolute numbers, one is governed by a Democrat, one by an Independent, and three by Republicans:

https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2022/fastest-...

Of the top 10 fastest-growing states, 7 out of 10 are governed by Republicans:

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/slideshows/these-are...

deepdriver··on Ask HN: How to find a small town to relocate for remote work?
Dunno about "best" cities, but the most dangerous in terms of violent crime have mainly Democratic or nonpartisan mayors by a wide margin:

https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-most-dangerous-cities-i...

Edit: I know it breaks etiquette to complain about downvotes, but this comment is not just material fact, it's my everyday lived reality. It's not safe to walk outside at night anymore on my block thanks to underfunded police and permissive progressive judges. I hear gunshots that I never heard before. The open drug use problem's getting worse, and schools have gotten way more dangerous for kids. Someone got stabbed on my street this weekend. The political cause and effect are clear. If that annoys you, bite me.

deepdriver··on Mars is ‘irrelevant to us’ if Earth is doomed, says Kim Stanley Robertson
The "past 550 million years" includes the Permian-Triassic Extinction, or Great Dying, of 251 million years ago. Do they refer to the million-year death zone after this event as a period when "[CO2 was] measured in thousands of parts per million"? Seems like an incomplete analysis.

Wikipedia claims, "[the] trigger for these mass extinctions appears to be a warming of the ocean caused by a rise of carbon dioxide levels to about 1000 parts per million":

As it turns out, that's what they were doing this whole time, at least with the Javelin program. Not something you can design and ship overnight.

The military-industrial complex exists for sure, but it's good to have high-tech arms when you need them.

deepdriver··on Why employees want to work in vilified industries
Are defense contractors still vilified? Americans (and Ukrainians) all seem to love Raytheon now:

I expect this goodwill to vanish once the current war ends, and reappear the instant China invades Taiwan.

deepdriver··on Breaking all macOS security layers with a single vulnerability
Related to this, is there an easy way to run arbitrary programs in the macOS sandbox? AFAIK sandboxing is opt-in for app developers at the moment. Does manual invocation of sandbox-exec on the command line still work, and are there GUI helpers for running arbitrary apps with this tool?

Edit: Apparently sandbox-exec is still usable, just not (publicly) well-documented. Would be nice of Apple to make sandboxing easier for regular users running untrusted apps that don't opt-in to the sandbox. I’m thinking of Firefox and Firefox extensions in particular.

https://7402.org/blog/2020/macos-sandboxing-of-folder.html

>The only non-folkloric documentation is found in the man page for sandbox-exec [...]

>Sandbox documentation has been a moving target over the years. Because it is a private interface, Apple is under no obligation to maintain forward or backward compatibility. Take note of the publication date of any information found online.

>Just to be clear, the sandbox profile format is not documented for third party use. Feel free to experiment with this stuff, but please don’t try to ship a product based on it.

deepdriver··on AWS Just Walk Out Technology
>You are using terms like DEI and saying it is important. But what you are writing comes across as very racist.

This as DEI working as designed. The latent condescension in the corporate propaganda is apparent and offensive when verbalized. If you speak it aloud like the GP did, you are chastised. In a professional setting that's an effective humiliation ritual. It strongly discourages you from speaking up again in the future. Eventually you notice more flaws in the DEI sales pitch, but by then you've learned your lesson. You stay quiet. Thus the worker is controlled and the corporate propaganda is shielded from criticism.

As posted below, Amazon has been caught measuring workplace diversity and correlating it negatively with unionization and worker solidarity. To them, forced diversity is a net benefit. But the downsides of forced diversity are never to be mentioned by the workers themselves, who are irredeemable racists if they say what Amazon internally acknowledges to be true:

deepdriver··on Mars is ‘irrelevant to us’ if Earth is doomed, says Kim Stanley Robertson
If we face an anoxic ocean event, this simply isn't true. Such an event could leads to the upwelling and release of huge quantities of hydrogen sulfide. Diffused throughout the Earth's atmosphere this would kill nearly all life, and remain present in lethal concentrations for hundreds of thousands to millions of years judging by the fossil record from the Permian-Triassic extinction. That's a long time to rely on artificial life support systems.
