deegles··on US set to unveil long-awaited crackdown on real estate money laundering
Do it on a consistent enough basis and you could sell the data to hedge funds no problem.
deegles··on eSignature Beta for Google Docs and Google Drive
Why is it unwarranted?
deegles··on 'Forever chemicals' could be in nearly half of US tap water, federal study finds
I installed a reverse osmosis water filter at home, it's great for removing PFAS (https://www.health.state.mn.us/communities/environment/hazar...).

They can be expensive but it's worth it to have clean drinking water. Be sure to get one with a built in pump to maintain the right pressure on the membrane. I like the iSpring brand.

deegles··on Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement
Can I memorize copyrighted material and recite it on Youtube? What if I do so but imperfectly? Where do you draw the line? If it's infringement for a human to do that why is it not for a LLM?
deegles··on Taurine deficiency as a driver of aging
There is selective pressure for aging because populations of organisms that don't age cannot evolve to adapt to new environments.
deegles··on Customer ratings have become meaningless. ‘people give 5 stars like it’s candy.’
Most people know that if a car share driver gets enough bad reviews they get kicked off the platform. Maybe part of that trend is not wanting to be responsible for "taking away" someone's source of income, even if the service was just average. Really egregious things can be reported in other ways.

There's also the cognitive burden of having to compare "this" ride to "every other ride you've ever had". That, plus the fact that you rarely see an impact of giving reviews... it's easier to just hit 5 stars or ignore.

deegles··on Statement on AI Risk
Serious question... where can I read the best summaries of the arguments in favor of "AGI will destroy humanity"? and also arguments against? I'm not convinced we can predict how it will behave.
deegles··on Graphs That Explain Software Engineering Salaries in 2023
I would love to see that chart of average pay by city adjusted to be after state and local taxes, and maybe with a Cost of Living estimate. Gross numbers aren't what hits your bank account.
deegles··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
What does it mean for a SDC platform to "win"? They either drive safely or they don't.

We're setting up for the biggest "winner take all" product-market fit in history.

Besides, ~99.9% of people won't have the expertise to make an informed decision on which provider to use (if they even have a choice).

The only losing scenario is if one is particularly bad, leading to a ton of regulation (like a FAA for SDCs).

deegles··on High-Performance Graph Databases
What are the databases with easy schema evolution?
deegles··on Ozempic drug supresses desire to smoke, drink and more?
What do you suggest otherwise? Clearly whatever we're doing now has led us to this point.
deegles··on Lately I've been using timers daily
I went through a "productivity" phase where I tried to listen to podcasts every day at 1.5x speed or more to be more efficient... it did not last long.
deegles··on Rekt.network
For those wondering, the entire top banner is the volume bar. Just drag the volume icon to the left.
deegles··on Show HN: Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers
I would love to hook this up to a LoRa receiver and use it around town, will be fun to hack on.
deegles··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
I believe that hybrid and remote work is going to lead to more expensive/dense cities, not less. Remote workers will mostly stay in place or snatch up 2+ br places (for their home office) and hybrid offices could rotate employees to up usage (e.g. hot desks/shifts/etc).
deegles··on When you lose the ability to write, you also lose some of your ability to think
I'm thinking about buying a personal voice recorder and keeping it on me 24/7. I could run the audio through Whisper every day and then slowly build up a database of facts that I could query. Like every day if I learn someone's birthday or meet a new person, I could quickly say "I met XYZ at the meeting and we talked about AI bots. Their birthday is May 11th", or "remember to pay the phone bill on the 21st of every month". And then every day the assistant could query that database and tell me who's birthday it is, or which task I need to take care of. If it was realtime then we get closer to a "Her" style AI assistant.

The biggest issue I have is with the models being cloud hosted. I want to own and control all of my data especially personal things like voice recordings... any company will promise the moon when talking about their data security, but we should be 100x more worried about the risks in the long term.

deegles··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
I was in Japan recently and they sell these pocket size translator devices with a microphone, camera and screen. You can speak to it or take pictures and it will translate on the fly. Maybe $100 usd range for a nice one.

It's only a matter of time before someone makes a similar device with a decent LLM on it, and premium ones will have more memory/cpu power.

deegles··on Study finds new pathway for clearing misfolded proteins
Just buy glycine, it's cheaper and has the same effect. Up to 20g/day is safe.
deegles··on Ubuntu Touch OTA-1 Focal brings Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to smartphones
Remember the Ubuntu phone kickstarter? I pledged for it back in the day and was relieved it fell through... maybe some day they will try again.
deegles··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
I had to throw away my nice Leatherman Micra (because of the tiny blade) at an airport because I forgot it was in my carry on, only to sit at a restaurant next to the gate and be given a full size serrated steak knife with my meal...
deegles··on Zed, the new code editor from Atom developers, has entered open beta
I like the remote code editing feature. I would love a solution that lets me write code on my iPad, including running the code locally. If I could run a server at home and connect to it it would be great. Is there anything like that?
deegles··on Google Reader shut down announced ten years ago today
Was its usage actually declining? When it was shut down every other feed reader alternative I tried was overloaded for weeks.
deegles··on What is REM sleep and why is it important?
There was a device called the Dreem headband that used EEG and bone conduction earphones to play special tones at specific points of your sleep cycle, the goal being to extend the REM segments. Unfortunately that function was software limited to the EU market for whatever reason and then they stopped selling it to the public. I almost got one before they did but I couldn't guarantee that I would have that functionality. Hopefully it goes on sale again soon.

deegles··on ChatGPT launches boom in AI-written e-books on Amazon
I feel like the biggest impact will be for authors who have an existing body of work... you can train the model on your writing and generate new text in your own style. What takes days could be done in hours.

I'm sure the same could be done for editors... train it on annotated text (original + corrections), use it to generate new edits.

deegles··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
> they can trick a computer to go against it's programming

isn't it behaving exactly as programmed? there's no consciousness to trick. The developers being unable to anticipate the response to all the possible inputs to their program is a different issue.

deegles··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
Why would an AI be civilization ending? maybe it will be civilization-enhancing. Any line of reasoning that leads you to "AI will be bad for humanity" could just as easily be "AI will be good for humanity."

As the saying goes, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

deegles··on Disinfection with Far-UV (222 nm Ultraviolet light) (2020) [pdf]
Read this: https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/critical-thinking-health-g...
deegles··on Disinfection with Far-UV (222 nm Ultraviolet light) (2020) [pdf]
The immune system is not a muscle that needs to be "exercised."
deegles··on Disinfection with Far-UV (222 nm Ultraviolet light) (2020) [pdf]
They'll just have to chime in and clarify which pathogens they meant.

I was snarky because the idea of "exercising the immune system" is misinformation and used by "immunity debt" proponents.

deegles··on Disinfection with Far-UV (222 nm Ultraviolet light) (2020) [pdf]
let me know how your exercise with avian flu, yellow fever, HIV, ebola, hepatitis, etc etc etc goes.
