decimalenough··on Europe EV Sales BEVs Jump 50% & Reach 26% Market Share
Tesla wins on charging because Superchargers are ubiquitous and they just work: you can pull up to one and be pretty much guaranteed that you'll be able to charge. This is manifestly not the case for any of the competition.
decimalenough··on AI Mania: From Tulips to Tokens
Bitcoin mining is powered by ASICs. Random shitcoins are not.
decimalenough··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
I'm hardly a fan of the WMF, but the headline is clickbait. The WMF has used a law firm called Jones Day for brand and trademark management for over a decade. The firm is one of the largest legal firms in the US and it also does union busting, but a) the WMF does not appear to have engaged them for that, and b) the relationship long predates the current kerfuffle.
decimalenough··on RamenHaus
FWIW, prices have exploded in Japan as well. Ramen used to be ¥500 in a standard Chinese restaurant, maybe a few hundred more for a fancy one, and no restaurant dared breach the ¥1000 barrier.

Fortunately for the traveler, this has been more than matched by the implosion of the yen exchange rate, meaning in USD terms ¥1100 today is still cheaper than ¥500 ten years ago.

decimalenough··on Kenji/Serious Eats – 30-Min Pressure Cooker Pho Ga
The average ramen, yes, but in the same way that many people in the US obsess about the perfect burger, there is a serious ramen scene in Japan with obsessive ramen devotees and chefs pushing the envelope.
decimalenough··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Blame the US for that one, not FIFA.

Yes.

decimalenough··on Refactoring cuisine: how an Iraqi stew sailed to Singapore
Fun fact: even today, kimchi (and food in general) in North Korea is less spicy than the South, because they've basically missed out on 50 years of culinary evolution.

https://www.youngpioneertours.com/north-south-korean-kimchi/

Likewise, while Japanese cuisine is generally not spicy at all, the few outliers like mentaiko generally originate from the southern regions like Kyushu and Okinawa that traded with Korea & China.

decimalenough··on How to survive boiling water
Left in previously boiled water for 4 min. We can deduce this from the second sample, which simulates forgetting your tea bag in the mug for 15 min.
decimalenough··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
To be a bit more precise, the Nankai ("South Sea") Trough is a tectonic subduction zone to the south of Japan, roughly the entire length from Izu to Kyushu:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankai_Trough

And Nankai megathrust earthquakes are those caused by plate movement there:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankai_megathrust_earthquakes

Statistically major earthquakes occur here every 90-200 years, and the last was in 1946.

decimalenough··on My current strategy is to not read any of the code written by my agents
In test-driven development, you're supposed to write out the tests first to specify the desired behavior, then write the code to confirm to that.
decimalenough··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
Google has a strong interest in everybody getting better internet (see Fiber, Loon, Fi, etc), which lines up well with Starlink.
decimalenough··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
Yes. And as far as any future owners are concerned, that's perfectly true.
decimalenough··on Alien World Chemistry Found Inside Meteorite That Struck New Jersey Home
Now you just need to find their contact details. Beware the Leopard!
decimalenough··on JetZero
No, but that's really the least of the problems in getting this thing into commercial flight.

> Coördination

A few years ago, I would your use of diaeresis an admirable quirk. But now, especially given the em-dashes, I'm wondering if you're an LLM overtrained on the New Yorker.

decimalenough··on Did they ghost you?
I presume the previous poster is one of many interviewers, not the recruiter.

As an interviewer myself, I get where they're coming from. My email is not shared with applicants, so finding it requires some stalking or at least digging me up on LinkedIn. By the time they reach out, I've already put in my notes, and any final decision is out of my hands. So while I'm not going to hold it against them, it's not a particularly useful move on the candidate's part either.

decimalenough··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
The current panic is happening precisely because Chinese open weight models like Kimi and Qwen are demonstrably competitive with SotA models like Fable, but far cheaper.

decimalenough··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
The entire houseofsaud.com site appears to be LLM-generated, I wouldn't trust a single thing it says.
decimalenough··on Couple pay >$800k for a gene-editing therapy for their daughter. She died.
If he had succeeded, though, he would have been a hero, both to the parents and the world. And the same racing that we are condemning as monstrous would have saved other children as well.

Obviously I'm not saying he is a hero or that what he did is right, just pointing out that the ethical tradeoffs in medical research like this get very complicated very fast. Ultimately it boils down to the trolley problem: is sacrificing a few worth saving many others?

decimalenough··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
C'mon, how bad can it be...

...OK, that's not just bad, that's positively disturbing.

decimalenough··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
> This is because appending site: reddit.com to a search query is basically a surefire way to find results written by genuine humans.

This is, sadly, not even remotely the case anymore.

decimalenough··on The World's 2,400 Castles
Nope, unless you count things like this: https://www.kryalcastle.com.au/

Although there are plenty of old coastal fortifications, which don't appear to count even though things like Fort Siloso in Singapore (a WW2 vintage concrete bunker) apparently do.

decimalenough··on The Voice of Google
> it is literally the hardware-software-businessmodel matrix which creates and maintains conditions of oppression through unprecedented surveillance and other late-stage capitalistic evils.

No, that would "literally" be Palantir. Like, literally literally, that's their actual business model: selling surveillance and murder drones to intelligence agencies.

decimalenough··on That post never existed. Stop listening to that thing
That's not how it works. Maps will see that the average speed of cars around Chinatown has slowed to a crawl, and it will route drivers elsewhere. They also get lists of planned closures from local traffic agencies, and you'll see these clearly displayed in black and red with little stop signs. (The quality of this data obviously varies wildly though.)

Accidents on highways are a different story because there are rarely any alternatives, or if there are, they're so much slower that it still makes sense to suffer through the 30 min jam.

decimalenough··on Starship's Thirteenth Flight Test
Scrubbed at T-00:00 after the engines had already started firing, apparently four of them didn't light properly. Never seen that before, but still glad they kept it under control.
decimalenough··on Stripe and Advent have made a joint offer to acquire PayPal – sources
It's not about morals, it's about regulatory heat and risk. Cannabis in the US remains illegal on the federal level, and the chargeback rates on adult services are through the roof.
decimalenough··on Show HN: For 10 World Cups, my model's 2 favorites had the champion every time
France was far and away the pre-tournament favorite for 2026, if anything it's somewhat impressive that OP's model correctly predicted that they wouldn't make it.

Here's hoping they were right for England as well, but we'll find out soon enough.
