deathtrader666··on Effective Spaced Repetition
Hi,

Given that SRS is a long-term endeavour, going on several years, I'd balk at paying $49/month for your app. Maybe $60/year, but your current pricing is really hard to swallow.

deathtrader666··on Perspective: Open Source WebAssembly-Powered BI
Worked perfectly fine on Brave on Android.
deathtrader666··on BBC Modi Documentary Removal
yt-dlp can grab the .mp4 from that easily.
deathtrader666··on OpenJourney: Midjourney, but Open Source
"For using OpenJourney you have to make an account in huggingface and make a token with write permission."
deathtrader666··on Ask HN: Books that teach programming by building a series of small projects?
https://symfony.com/doc/6.2/the-fast-track/en/index.html
deathtrader666··on Pluralsight lays off 400 employees – 20% workforce
Pluralsight caught me and several of my friends off guard by silently renewing our subscriptions. No reminder emails. No email about the subscription renewal either. I got to know about it after going through my bank statement.

Their cancellation process is quite bad. The "agent" on the other end seemed standoff-ish.

deathtrader666··on Ask HN: How do you protect your eyes while coding for long hours?
If all one learns to do is only "asking the right questions", then how would you know if what the AI has produced are "the right answers" ?
deathtrader666··on Winter Is Here: Slowing Down to Fight SAD
But what if there's no sun? Like winters in the UK?

deathtrader666··on SBCL – New in Version 2.2.7
Wonderful to see SBCL getting frequent releases! Looks like they are on a monthly cadence.
deathtrader666··on Parents’ trauma leaves biological traces in children
Could say "neglect", unintentional neglect on some aspects of the child by (innocently) ignorant parent(s).
deathtrader666··on Tetra – Full stack reactive component framework for Django using Alpine.js
Like the LiveView for Phoenix
deathtrader666··on Andrew Ng updates his Machine Learning course
Why would Statistics, a branch of mathematics, become outdated in a few years?
deathtrader666··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
Any specific games? Genres?

deathtrader666··on Tell HN: Dear Google support” ad in SJ Mercury News today
Is there no way to serve a legal notice to Google in this case? I reckon they are bound to respond once their lawyers get involved..
deathtrader666··on My 70 year old mother has been using Linux on the desktop for the past 21 years
OTOH, Blender and DaVinci Resolve have first class support for Linux.
deathtrader666··on Indian online merchants cannot store credit card information from 2022
Yes, but large valuations don't correlate with better security practices.. Obviously the person above isn't talking about Amazon or Walmart when referring to "script kiddies".

Of the nearly 45-50 contract jobs I've seen, a lot of them use pirated WP or Magento plugins, and plain text storage of sensitive content.

deathtrader666··on Ada is not just another programming language (1986)
Given that everybody has limited time to learn new programming languages, does HN recommend learning Rust or Ada?
deathtrader666··on A simple way to build collaborative web apps
Yes, it would be great if someone with this experience can chime in, especially since Phoenix has CRDTs built-in.
deathtrader666··on Paternity leave: The hidden barriers keeping men at work
Along with the US, India is another large country with no mandated paternity leave for employees in the private sector. My current employer allowed for a measly TWO days.

deathtrader666··on Podswap: Keep airpods alive and out of the landfill
I have a "Service Battery" notification since 3 years, still gives me 4 hours.
deathtrader666··on Nvidia Canvas
Looks like it is Windows only. The absence of nVidia GPUs on Macs is really making Macs a weaker dev machine for ML work.
deathtrader666··on Why the United States has the best research universities
Plus, the US is literally printing its own money with abandon.
deathtrader666··on Ask HN: What are the ramifications of quitting a job before finding another?
In India, recruiters will not even accept / process your job application unless you fill in the fields for "existing salary" and "expected salary". And if you enter 0 or some random value, you may receive a call to verify those numbers.

As part of your joining procedure, the new company's HR will necessarily ask for past 3 months payslips from the previous employer. And if the numbers don't match what was disclosed, they quickly rescind the offer.

deathtrader666··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
There's ASUS from Taiwan.
deathtrader666··on Ask HN: Are OnPrem solutions dying out?
One anecdote - I work in an org that makes enterprise software for compliance/regulatory mgmt/risk mgmt .. most of our customers, even in sensitive industries, are perfectly fine with moving to the cloud.
deathtrader666··on A solo journey to $100k in sales
Looks like the set of developers who cannot edit their own config files and the set of developers who are careful enough to use a password manager are mutually exclusive.
deathtrader666··on Coq 8.13
Alright, but why?
deathtrader666··on The great suspender pulled from Chrome store
After the change of ownership came to light, I had installed the extension from GitHub.
