deadmansshoes··on The truth about cold water
Are you sure about this? Surely they keep a layer of warmer water nearer your skin - the same way wet suits work.

Once someone is out the water wet clothing should be removed.

My wife told me I was the most annoying person she'd ever known..I almost choked on my vuvuzela.

deadmansshoes··on Poll: What web server do you use?
Apache on Windows is a disaster especially for CGI stuff. IIS7 and ISAPI works like a dream in comparison.
deadmansshoes··on There Are No Famous Programmers
The key to opensource is that professional programmers contribute time, paid for by their companies, to a project that benefits all parties in the long term.

Whilst a single programmer start make something great, it won't last without others contributing, patching, documenting..and using the code.

If you don't like people using code, don't release it as opensource..

deadmansshoes··on Why Change Is So Hard: Self-Control Is Exhaustible
Are peoples' levels of gullibility also exhaustible, or do we have to define a whole swathe of human characteristics based on some students, radishes, and cookies?
deadmansshoes··on The Windows Era is over...
I have a "smart phone" with Internet connection, but I've used it about 5 times in the last year. Its useful for checking emails but horrible to try and respond. If you actually need to do something on the net, you need a netbook or laptop..which needs Windows or Linux.
deadmansshoes··on State's bad teachers rarely get fired
The same paper (a study on rural schools in India) refers to another study whose interpretation of similar results as "being consistent with teachers expending effort towards short-term increases in test scores but not towards long-term learning."

If you start measuring there will be high and low values. As soon as this happens people will look to blame someone. Parents never blame their own "angels" (or themselves), so it will be the teachers who lose out. If parents care about their children's education they can tell if a teacher is useless.

Exactly my point..it's not going to lead to better software though is it? And teachers gaming the system won't lead to better education.

Are you going to analyze teachers performance based on their students results? If so you will be penalizing those in worse areas.

And you will make teachers teach to your performance criteria.

Besides how many programmers would like their value to be assessed by a piece of software?
