ddorian43··on Looking Ahead to Postgres 19
Its not transactional or atomic.
ddorian43··on Ten years of ClickHouse in open source
It is called "zero copy" in clickhouse land.

That feature, is becoming central for an OLAP db, even a free/open-source one.

ddorian43··on Ten years of ClickHouse in open source
Clickhouse is *really* gatekeeping the "zero copy replication" where you store data on object-storage and have high availability from the open source version.
ddorian43··on How TimescaleDB compresses time-series data
What is your idea on monetizing it? Besides Timescale the other providers have found issue on monetization AFAIK. And they all restrict the S3 offloading for Enterprise accounts.
ddorian43··on Albania Is Not for Sale: Kushner's $4B Resort Triggers'Flamingo Revolution'
It's worse. Most/All of the development is done by subcontractors who also get apartments/villas instead of plain cash for their work. So you will do plumbing on 10 villas and for your work get 20% cash + 1 apartment that you have to sell it yourself. This for all subcontractors except steel.
ddorian43··on Albania Is Not for Sale: Kushner's $4B Resort Triggers'Flamingo Revolution'
There are 2 projects here. And there is a lot of missing details from both.

But what has happened before is that:

The government gives free/cheap/exclusive public land to someone to build apartments/villas. They sell these to whoever wants to buy before starting construction. At the end of construction, with the profits, they build nice hotels at the frontline and keep for themselves without investing any of their own money in anything.

So they will most likely build apartments in Narta, sell them to the populace, and keep Sazan for themselves as luxury resort.

Something worse than this has started happening for high rises too, where they start selling before getting the permit even. So they don't invest their own money even to get the initial permit to start building.

ddorian43··on Albania Is Not for Sale: Kushner's $4B Resort Triggers'Flamingo Revolution'
Very hard for the general public to gain things though.

It's too luxury, most likely will pay no taxes for years, you can import workers from elsewhere, etc etc.

It's not the first time this kind of thing happens in Albania and we've already seen results.

Normal people will just never be able to go there again. People in power will either get millions or 1+ free apartment/villa, or heavily discounted price (depends on how much power you have).

I was literally kitesurfing when they came and added fences to the road to block access to the beach.

When Trump was running for the first time, the prime minister was extremely against Trump and even ridiculed him publicly on interviews "shame of our civilization" https://foreignpolicy.com/2016/04/13/albanian-prime-minister...

Which backfired after Trump won twice in US. But it's just business.

ddorian43··on Albania Is Not for Sale: Kushner's $4B Resort Triggers'Flamingo Revolution'
Yes. The whole bought media, party in-power, the opposition are against the protests and are trying to downplay them.

Source: I live there. It's very easy to tell if you do.

ddorian43··on Gemma 4 12B: A unified, encoder-free multimodal model
> people will live to 125 quite steadily

Only after the current generation(s) of doctor(s) dies. And only if you make this in pill-form. Otherwise people will be people and won't even go to the gym.

It might be also the reverse, they develop a powerful+personalized drug that brings heaven on earth to your neurons (first time heroin experience + sexual gratification + childhood fulfillment + extremely addicting etc etc etc).

Now that I think of it I'm gonna go with the latter.

ddorian43··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
I asked because I already know the correct answer, which is "metabolic psychiatry", meaning versions of keto/carnivore/epilepsy-keto diets (the latter is the strongest).

Context for old people in assisted living: https://www.metabolicmind.org/resources/news-views/podcasts/...

ddorian43··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
What is your approach towards nutrition ? Meaning which exact diet do you expect to help in mental health?
ddorian43··on The AI revolution – spamming 680PRs in 442 GitHub repos in 21 days in April
Since companies probably won't do anything about this, gotta complain harder.

Of course I was the recipient of 1 of those 442 pull requests and it was just a typo fix on a distributed database engine, the guy didn't even reply.

ddorian43··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
Jumping takes real skill. I went like 60 times and can barely jump 7m in perfect conditions by trying very hard.

That happens very rarely like recently in Israel where they went out on a storm, and there was a very rare very-big gust. But extremely rare comibation of things that can go wrong.

Yes you need to monitor the wind. I'm kiting today for example.

ddorian43··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
Kitesurfing is insane yes! I can jump up to ~6m in 1 year.

Really efficient adrenaline with relatively very low risk.

ddorian43··on What young workers are doing to AI-proof themselves

ddorian43··on Python 3.15's JIT is now back on track

ddorian43··on MM120, a pharmaceutical form of LSD, shown to reduce anxiety symptoms (2025)
Like, just don't tell anybody. And there are many things you haven't tried, like metabolic ketogenic therapy as an example.
ddorian43··on Optimizing Top K in Postgres

ddorian43··on Making geo joins faster with H3 indexes
He always comments like this. Never commenting a concrete answer. Just look at his history. Hes been doing this for years. Probably as advertisment for himself or to just feel/show superior.
ddorian43··on Italy Railways Sabotaged
will you go to the frontline?
ddorian43··on I’m leaving Redis for SolidQueue
> Redis beats everything else for the above usecase.

Reminds me of Antirez blog post that when Redis is configured for durability it becomes like/slower than postgresql http://oldblog.antirez.com/post/redis-persistence-demystifie...

ddorian43··on Await Is Not a Context Switch: Understanding Python's Coroutines vs. Tasks
Favor gevent instead.

Maybe in a few years just plain threads when ecosystem is ok for gil less.

ddorian43··on Scaling HNSWs
Just lookup how vespa.ai does it, it's open source.
ddorian43··on Zig's New Async I/O
Maybe he meant gevent? Which is better than async io in python.
ddorian43··on Companies are lying about AI layoffs?
How about this: hire 25% less engineers in Europe but use the same wage as in US.
ddorian43··on US economy added just 22,000 jobs in August, unemployment highest in 4 yrs
What perfect landing? For whom? The house market prices have to be destroyed.
ddorian43··on Is Google Down? - EU networking issue
Yes, google, youtube, gmail
ddorian43··on Python has had async for 10 years – why isn't it more popular?
Because it sucks compared to gevent (green threads). But for some reason, people always disregard this option. They don't even read it. Like any comment with gevent is shadowbanned and it doesn't register in their mind.
ddorian43··on Income Equality in Nordic Countries: Myths, Facts, and Lessons
Keto also helps (sometimes) with depression though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7jg6wlD6gY (The Truth About Treatment Resistant Depression: Part One (Breaking the Myth))

And it's not "just do some keto" in this case. You have to be very strict.

But there are many dosages of keto diet and you have to do it correctly.

Epilepsy keto is hard for real and takes commitment. You will never eat modern food again in your life. But better than life-long-suffering just to eat cake.
