ddod··on Node.js in Production
I don't think that's true. I've hit the front page a couple times and actually got very little traffic, and definitely nothing that my $5 vps with no caching couldn't handle.
ddod··on Ask HN: Can we get a "Show HN:" section
I built ShowingHN. It doesn't do voting since that would require polling for updated tallies all the time, and because most good Show HNs don't typically get that many points. Perhaps a dedicated section on HN would fix that. If there are any specific changes you'd like me to make on ShowingHN to make it more useful, let me know and I'll see if I can implement them.

P.S. I also added an RSS feed output recently: http://showinghn.com/feed.xml

ddod··on Wit.ai (YC W14) Wants To Be The Twilio For Natural Language
Voice to text is a multi-million if not billion dollar endeavor. I simply implemented the Web Speech API, which ostensibly uses Google (and possibly Apple's) voice recognition system. I came up with the text comprehension bit, which is limited to the input quality (what I get from the API) and the training set. I've been adjusting and adding to the training set since I first released this, but the matching has worked as well as I'd hope for.

My training set is specifically designed to be conversational interview and personal questions, but I think a lot of the people who reach the site don't grasp that.

Here's some examples of the input it gets and has no clue what to do with:

- " um changes nice so when you change the things december " matched to: -1: no match

- " nexus 10 " matched to: 13: Huh?

- " pictures " matched to: 14: Huh?

- " call " matched to: 17: Cool

- "videos " matched to: 16: Huh?

- " change " matched to: 15: Huh?

And this is a set of input where people did get it:

- " hi what's your name " matched to: 23: My name

- "what's your name " matched to: 27: My name

- "what do you do " matched to: 31: What I do

- "why should we hire you " matched to: 38: Why you should hire me

-"what's your favorite food " matched to: 35: Food

-"wendy's see yourself in 5 years " matched to: 28: Goals

Since the Wit.ai guys gave a shout out on my thread earlier today, I thought I'd return the favor and show off my own implementation of a voice>>text>>comprehension system that I used to make my personal site voice interactive: https://benwasser.com

I'm really glad there's work and advancement being done in this arena and I'm hoping to see more people playing around with it.

ddod··on Show HN: I made my website/resume voice controlled
That's not the intended behavior. I developed it on Chrome for Mac, so it should just listen continuously. If you have a second, could you let me know what OS and browser versions you're on?

Also, I agree that it could be a cool service, but my wrapper is relatively light compared to the work being done by Google, so I'm guessing you'll start to see a lot of competition in this area.

ddod··on Show HN: I made my website/resume voice controlled
I hadn't seen this yet. It looks really cool and I'll have to devote some time to learning what they're doing.
ddod··on Show HN: I made my website/resume voice controlled
Sorry about that! It uses the nascent Web Speech API which seems to rely on external audio processing (i.e. how Siri works). Google has such capabilities so that's why it currently works with Chrome (although I think it works in Safari, as well).
ddod··on Show HN: I made my website/resume voice controlled
Glad you liked it. It uses Google's voice recognition servers, so Android's voice recognition may prove better for you than Siri.

It currently has 64 predefined answers with multiple triggers linked to each one.

ddod··on Show HN: I made my website/resume voice controlled
This was made using the Web Speech API and a matching system I came up with that uses Levenshtein distances and tokenized string matching. I wrote up some demo code here: https://github.com/benwasser/WebSpeechAPI
ddod··on Popcorn Time Is So Good at Movie Piracy, It’s Scary
"[torrenting] isn’t necessarily safe unless you’re using a virtual private network to mask your whereabouts."

I find it really frustrating that TIME can publish such incorrect information that could directly lead to the detriment of its readers. I've also seen a couple people in HN saying a VPN is the "safe" way to torrent. Unless you're sure a VPN service won't comply with subpoenas or you've paid in bitcoin, it's not safer than not using one.

ddod··on Arduboy: The Interactive Digital Business Card
I think there's a great opportunity for someone to release a simple, programmable Gameboy-esque device that runs Javascript or something similarly noob-friendly to give people (and kids) a less friction-filled path to learning programming. This might not be the device for that, but it's a really cool project nevertheless.
ddod··on Build an algorithm to predict friendships, then actually use it to meet people
This is the sort of thing I'm personally very interested in, and I have some pretty novel ideas for how I'd approach it. That said, I wouldn't participate in this because it clearly devalues the industry. You should really rethink your approach.

Developers who are considering participation in this, I'd suggest you build something for yourself with data acquired elsewhere.

ddod··on Toast Sandwich
It's kind of interesting how HN admins removed a string of posts yesterday relating to the Node.js sexism issue without any explanation, and yet this remains. It's also a bit sad that a post like this gets way more attention than 95% of the "Show HN"s.
ddod··on The Power of a Pronoun
I'm afraid some will look at this as an issue of the fickle HN crowd never being satisfied, but it really is more about exercising rationality. Firstly, nobody really had to publicize this ridiculously miniscule episode, as it was sorted out responsibly without the attention. It's great for women to see how many people rally to their inclusion in tech, but there's a not-too-fine line between displays of inclusion and Joyent's response. This sort of response is polarizing and inasmuch works against the goal of equality, safety, and comfort of men and women in the industry. Also, has anyone considered language barriers in this discussion, because if that was a factor, it would be an even worse reason to start a public shaming and loss of a contributor.
ddod··on A web-based IDE for Javascript, HTML, and CSS
It doesn't seem like it has anything to do with server-side coding, so unless I'm incorrect, it's yet another entry into the likes of JSFiddle, CodePen, JSBin, CSSDeck, Dabblet, Tinkerbin, Liveweave, etc.
ddod··on Show HN: Updating archive of HN's /newest, with pre-rendering of the URLs
This is actually really awesome from a research perspective. I imagine you could do things like analyze word pools, website layouts, colors, and other latent link data and correlate that with success/failure rates on HN. If I had more time, I could definitely see myself building things based off of this. Some sort of API would be useful for such.

Great work!

ddod··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2013)
Just to provide a second point of reference, I'm a relatively recent dev hire at Likeable Local and it's been a really good choice for me. I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has, as well, so feel free to reach out to me.
ddod··on [dead]
Resubmitted since it's apparently one of my more popular projects and I just rewrote part of it to make it much faster.
ddod··on Show HN: I made my own free Javascript blogging engine over the weekend
Just put it up on GitHub: https://github.com/benwasser/blahsay

Timing isn't too interesting as I doubt what I could build in 2 days could really compete with the year-long development of Ghost. This was just something I wanted to use, so I built it.

ddod··on MIT Report is a whitewash. My Statement in Response
I'm wondering if you would say the same about Bradley Manning were he to commit suicide. I definitely see the point you're making, and I've made it in the past myself with similar issues, but when your world has crumpled down around you and there's no escape, and people are actively trying to lock you in a cell for as long as they can, I don't think it necessarily requires a very troubled mind to weigh your options there.

His death shouldn't be seen so much as a cause and effect so much as a wake up call that acting in the way MIT, JSTOR, and the government did isn't right and is hurting people in ways we don't necessarily pay attention to or care about when it's just some small news item about a trial.

ddod··on MIT Report is a whitewash. My Statement in Response
It seems like objecting to the FOIA is all the report we need on how wrong/right their actions were. If they think that whatever in there is damaging to them or likely to cause people enough anger to create a dangerous climate for those involved, it doesn't really matter what MIT's internal report characterizes things as.
ddod··on Ask HN: Where do you host your NodeJS applications?
I personally use UGVPS and ChicagoVPS. You can find a bunch of offers on lowendbox and webhostingtalk
ddod··on Ask HN: Where do you host your NodeJS applications?
Since so many people here are saying Heroku, Linode, or AWS, I'm wondering if someone could explain the value proposition of these over a cheap VPS for most small to medium deployments.

I can get a 4GB ram VPS for $10/m, which seems orders of magnitude cheaper than the popular options. What am I missing out on?

ddod··on How to deal with negativity on Twitter
I am not too clued into the personalities involved, but in the scheme of things, being snarky or critical seems a lot less offensive than calling people out by name in a semi-permanent and searchable medium to effectively say they're assholes.

I think one of the main themes during the popularization/destruction of any community is when a wave of "anti-negativity" comes in to sweep away any complaints about the degrading landscape of the community.

ddod··on Girl unaware all her pictures are sent to journalist
I really doubt that, as it doesn't seem like you can put in multiple email addresses when you are first signing up for Facebook (http://puu.sh/2IP5J.png). I also don't imagine Facebook continues to email the unverified email addresses after a user has changed their address to pass the verification.
ddod··on Girl unaware all her pictures are sent to journalist
I'm glad to see a story like this getting some press as I've suspected that I've been dealing with something very similar for years now. Every so often I get an email from Facebook or some other service asking me to confirm a sign up I never made and under a different name, and then afterwards (where it gets strange) I get an email thanking me for confirming. Gmail says no other IPs have logged into my account and there's nothing in my sent folder related to it. I've changed passwords and it still happens. It's almost as if I share an email address with someone but they have a different "account".
ddod··on Show HN: Reddit analytics
Eventually, yes, if there's enough demand. Right now I'm focusing on getting more data, as even though my sample size is rather large, my per-subreddit samples are still small.
ddod··on Show HN: Showing HN
Node.js with nothing fancy. It's only about 80 lines of code serverside.
ddod··on Show HN: Showing HN
I've upped all the sizes so hopefully it's a bit better now. I had only tested it on an old Macbook and a Nexus 7, where the original font, size, and color were all very readable to me. Thanks for the heads up.
ddod··on Show HN: Showing HN
Sorry for the eye-strain; I switched it from #777 to #444 just now, so hopefully there's a marginal improvement.

My scraper isn't currently set to get that deep, but the most upvoted per time period is a good idea that I'll look into.
