dd444fgdfg··on An ultra-precise clock shows how to link the quantum world with gravity
yeh it's the "lot" bit I'm confused about. like, aren't they always diverging, therefor the age difference should be a lot, right?
dd444fgdfg··on An ultra-precise clock shows how to link the quantum world with gravity
It's hard for me to have a useful mental model on this subject. As we know from the article, time passes differently for the top than the bottom, and this effect is in everything including you and me (obviously). What I find hard even less intuitive to grasp though, is whether or not this is cumulative. It should be right? 0.00000000000000001% slower on one side, well that adds up quickly. It can't be cumulative or my feet would be a lot older than my head, but I don't get how that's not true.

dd444fgdfg··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
on the contrary. for what it's worth, I think google search is finally open to disruption. the tech required to compete with them is finally commoditized enough that it's financially doable, plus, and most importantly, they've screwed up their search results so much now that google search is just not that good anymore.

I also think that they're "too" clever with their search to their detriment. We tend to think in terms of text search and are looking for results that match what we want. I'd prefer not to have a machine assume I actually intended something else. Just give me great text search where I can perform various inclusions/exclusions and you'll win the market

dd444fgdfg··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
I prefer my linux machine, but with hardware this good it feels kinda dumb to be on intel/amd...
dd444fgdfg··on Norway to hit 100% electric vehicle sales by early next year
i don't think that's a good comparison. think how many flights a single F1 race "causes". Not just the team members, theirs cars and equipment, but the millions of fans traveling to races around the world.

if the iPhone had never come out, I think we'd have monstrosities for smart phones with massive keyboards running windows CE. I'm glad it happened.
dd444fgdfg··on Why NoSQL
what I fail to fathom today is, when I think back to the late 90s, I had various production rdms, SQL Server 6 (or 7, can't remember), running on something like a Pentium 4, with millions of rows of data in various tables... and the performance was... fine. not an issue.
dd444fgdfg··on Is this the simplest (and most surprising) sorting algorithm?
ha, I did exactly the same thing!

IMHO, the risk of nuclear war is higher than we think. Can you imagine the number of expected casualties of all-out-war with China? We've played this game before. Japan/WW2. The US _will_ nuke China and justify it under number of lives saved.
dd444fgdfg··on IMGZ – Paid image sharing
Obey propaganda :D

actually, conform to influence doesn't mean that. It means, to influence a group you need to be part of the group. To be part of the group, you need to first conform to the group.

dd444fgdfg··on IMGZ – Paid image sharing
Stavros. You need to detach a little bit, get a 10,000m view. You've got something, you can be successful. But your approach is "out of whack" and people aren't going to support you. Conform to influence.
dd444fgdfg··on Designing Low Upkeep Software
they can be quite usable with something like the Serverless framework.

really though, in my opinion that should be a part of the core AWS solution. Lambda itself is otherwise "low level".

dd444fgdfg··on How we got to LiveView
I will read your article more thoroughly because it does sound interesting, but I'm curious how well this server-side state works from a scalability/robustness point of view.

It being stateless is normally a feature, as it doesn't matter which server the request hits, we can elastically scale them up and down.

With a "session" being server-side statefull, you now have session affinity and are you persisting/hyrdating that session somewhere? Is it kept in memory and lost of the server goes down? How long does that session persist? Lots of questions...

dd444fgdfg··on Kape Technologies buys ExpressVPN for $936M
I'm an ExpressVPN customer. Is this a bad thing? Does it make my data less private? Should I move VPN provider? To who?
dd444fgdfg··on Sir Clive Sinclair has died
I talked to him on the phone once, many years ago. Even though I was a kid I knew who he was. Very sad. RIP.
dd444fgdfg··on Australian gov to use facial recognition and GPS tracking to enforce quarantine
I for one agree with you.

I've never understood why America puts of with basically being a police state, with the level of police brutality and incarceration that they have.

And here in aussieland, we don't have that, but we do nothing to protect our liberties.

dd444fgdfg··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
you think this is bad, in South Australia they're making people download a government app, and they'll randomly message you and you need to take a picture of your face and it'll submit your face and location. If you don't respond the police with turn up to enforce it.

dd444fgdfg··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit so slow and unreliable?
I suspect it's less a case of them wanting the web client to suck, and more a case that the people who decide priorities don't care about the web client.

I'd bet there's some super frustrated PM/TL who knows what to do and wants to fix it but isn't allowed to spend any time on it.

dd444fgdfg··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit so slow and unreliable?
i used their iOS app, and they seem to have an outage around once every two weeks. other than that the performance is fine. it must be a front end problem
dd444fgdfg··on John Carmack on Hiring
unpopular opinion most certainly but we are all part of the problem. if I apply for google right now I'm another one of their 10k applicants today. Google are never going to hire me. The solutions begins with applicants self filtering instead of blasting every company with their resume, then complaining that said companies are unable to scale their recruitment process.

Be more honest with yourself before you apply. Are you really qualified. Are you either already at or above the level of everyone they currently employ?

dd444fgdfg··on Facebook apology as AI labels black men 'primates'
Humans are primates. The AI is correct. Does it classify white men and Asians as primates too? If not, that's a bug.

dd444fgdfg··on How long can a democracy maintain emergency limits and still call itself free?
ah, good that we've got a benchmark, we're good then
dd444fgdfg··on How long can a democracy maintain emergency limits and still call itself free?
Surely there has to come a point, in a free society like Australia, where the police say "no, we're not enforcing this". The US shows that this is unlikely though.
dd444fgdfg··on How long can a democracy maintain emergency limits and still call itself free?
As an aussie, this is humiliating. Why is it the "free" countries of the world are letting this happen? The US is a tyrannical police state in trillions of dollars of debt, and in Australia they can just create whatever evidence they need. At least they don't tend to shoot us that often, yet.
