dcraw··on Startup lessons
A lot of these resonate with me... to the extent that I already believe them. It's tough to absorb these sorts of generalities though, which is why startups make the same mistakes over and over again... not because they haven't heard the advice, but because it's hard to apply. I'd love to see, over the next 57 weeks, the author take one of these per week and tell a real story about how he learned it. An example: "Your authority as CEO is earned... don't try to use authority you didn't earn." When did you learn this? You certainly didn't think before "I should use authority that I haven't earned." So how did it stand in your head before, and what experience made you rethink it? Overall, I love stories that give me more concretes to absorb into my understanding of cause and effect, and details that I can use to bolster my understanding of the pithy advice. Thanks for sharing your hard-won experience, and I look forward to more posts in the future.
dcraw··on Obama’s Remarks on NSA Controversy
He will be escorted by the Secret Service, so he's not going to have a lot of privacy from the federal government either way.
dcraw··on I took the $300K
It's true that non-founder equity has a trivial chance of becoming life-changing money. But working at a fast-growing company has benefits. For inexperienced by ambitious people, the work-to-employee ratio makes it possible to take on projects that would normally go to someone more senior, prove your talent, learn quickly, and earn further options grants as a bonus. Even if you never get a windfall from that company, when you leave you'll have skipped a few years in job growth and be able to enter the next company in a better position.

To make a lot of money joining a startup, you probably have to be better at evaluating startups than VCs are, which is pretty difficult. Luckily, picking a startup where you can develop your skills, work with smart people, and have a lot of fun is easier than that. But it's still not automatic--you need to evaluate the founders and other employees to find out if you'll fit.

dcraw··on Show HN: EasyCSV, stop generating CSVs for non-tech colleagues (an MVP)
Your javascript snippet seems to point to http://easycsv.dev/. I'm guessing you'll want to replace that.

I was also confused about what CSVs I was supposed to create. It's not clear that you're generating CSVs of user data.

dcraw··on Finding your One Metric That Matters using SQL
Thanks for the comment. I'd love to see an example of the kind of 50/50 test analysis you do when you have time for a post.

I agree the hard part is the analysis, and I mentioned some of the challenges in the post. I hoped to use it as a way to illustrate some cool SQL techniques, rather than as a step-by-step method of finding the right metric, which I agree is much more complex task. Hopefully this analysis helps evaluate a potential metric to find out if it really is useful.

dcraw··on Using array_agg in Postgres – powerful and flexible
Cool. MySQL and SQLite both have something similar called group_concat. Useful for creating lists of ids to plug into another system.
dcraw··on Calculating rolling cohort retention with SQL
Thanks! I was surprised at how long it got, but hopefully the exercise is good for learning real-world SQL in general (beyond just the cohort use case). Would love requests for future posts topics if there's anything you want to learn.
dcraw··on Show HN: Introducing Metrica - Ad-hoc Analytics for MongoDB
Hey, thanks for the comment. The product has beta customers already, and is ready for more.

I've been working with the Citus Data guys on the MongoDB Foreign Data Wrapper for PostgreSQL. I've added a bunch of features to the wrapper and use that to enable the queries. Maybe I should add a "How does this work?" question to the FAQ?

dcraw··on Show HN: Introducing Metrica - Ad-hoc Analytics for MongoDB
Hi HN, I'm David, creator of Metrica. I'd love to get your feedback on the post and the product. Thanks!
dcraw··on Nginx now supports Websockets
I've had good results so far with node-http-proxy:

https://github.com/nodejitsu/node-http-proxy/

Easy to set up, and has the benefit of reducing the number of processes I need to maintain (my node server and my proxy server are the same).

dcraw··on Real-time SQL on Hadoop using Postgres foreign tables
Congrats to the Citus Data team on a big release. These guys know distributed databases backwards and forwards. Excited to see how this product stacks up against Hive.
dcraw··on Announcing MoSQL
Whoops. Okay, emailing.
dcraw··on Announcing MoSQL
I've added that capability to mongo_fdw, which I use for getmetrica.com. I'll be contributing it back soon (after that 9.2 API conversion). Would be happy to talk to you about the wrapper or Metrica. Email's in my profile.
dcraw··on Show HN: Chartulo.us - Chart anything from the command line
Nice, we already won an award! :)
dcraw··on Show HN: Chartulo.us - Chart anything from the command line
Ah, that's a cool project! We will check it out.
dcraw··on Show HN: Chartulo.us - Chart anything from the command line
Hey, that's a good point. We're also interested in collaboration. How do you share your charts once you create them?
dcraw··on Typist - Add animated typing text to any block element
I went for the 'do one thing simply' interface. I'd be curious what kind of interface you're looking for. Feel free to open an issue on github with some suggestions.
dcraw··on Typist - Add animated typing text to any block element
Thanks for checking it out. You're right, I'll add that demo today.
dcraw··on Typist - Add animated typing text to any block element
Ah, thanks! I turned it on to find an issue and forgot to turn it back off. Will do that now!
dcraw··on Typist - Add animated typing text to any block element
Nice. I like the design of your page! Is the highlight/retype effect in your demo part of the plugin?
dcraw··on Perfectionism
This is a post I wrote on my personal blog that I thought might be of interest to folks here. A lot of people seem to be able to relate to this problem, and I'm hoping some here will have thoughts on how to tackle it.
